Removing LCD screen and inverter from Toshiba Satellite L305 or L305D laptops
This guide explains how to access and remove the LCD screen and inverter board from Toshiba Satellite L305 or L305D laptop. I think this guide also works for Satellite L300 and L300D series. Maybe they look different, but all disassembly steps will be very similar.
The LCD screen and inverter board are secured by the plastic bezel which has to be removed. Unfortunately, in Satellite L305 and L305D laptop it’s very hard to remove the bezel without removing the top cover assembly. It’s possible but you can damage the bezel.
I’ll make a few extra steps and remove the top cover assembly first, as it explained in steps 1-9. Also, you can use this procedure for removing the keyboard and accessing the wireless card and dial up modem hidden under the keyboard.
After the top cover is removed, you can safely remove the display bezel and access the LCD screen with inverter board. If you are replacing the LCD screen or inverter, make sure to use compatible replacement parts.

I want to repace the ivnerter, I think it’s bad. How can I find a compatible replacement?

Matt,
Remove the original inverter and search for a white label. Usually Toshiba prints the part number on the label. When you find the part number, you can google it.
If you purchased your laptop in the United States, you can give me the laptop model number and I look up the inverter part number for you.

In the directions it doesn’t show a detailed view of Unpluging the touch pad cable like it does the keyboard cable. I just don’t want to break. Thank you.

Mark,
If you cannot figure out how to unplug the cable, I would strongly suggest taking the laptop to a professional repair shop. You can damage it.

Got the cable out no problem, just couldn’t see it real well. Where is the best spot to start popping up the cover?

i want to thank you for having these instructions up… was a big help.
would like to add to step 6… you have to take the 11 screws from bottom of the machine before the top cover assembly will come off.

Dino,
I mentioned that in the first step. If you click on the picture, you’ll see all these screws marked.

oh ok… i had just printed out the instructions and read thru and then followed step by step… lol but that does explain the remove all marked screws part… that probably should have got me to go back and look at the pic lol.
again appreciate the instructions for this… had to replace a screen for a family member and these were the only ones i came across.

Toshiba has told me that I can put an extra hard drive into the extra internal hard drive port into my
Toshiba Satellite L305-S5921, I’ve removed the keyboard, but it reveals nothing. And it looks f there is no way of accessing the very bottom of the computer to access the bottom of the motherboard to see if there is a extra hard drive port.
I know were the main hard drive port is. but how do I accesss the internal. I had to back off and reassemble before it too far out of hand lol

I have a Toshiba 1805-S274 and I cannot seem to find any instructions for removing the LCD Inverter. I can find instructions for the 14″ models, but nothing for the 15″ and the 14″ instructions do not seem to work on my model. The screen will go almost completely black after the unit has been on for awhile. I have read in other forums that it could be a loose connection or the inverter board. Any suggestions on how to remove the bezel?

I’ve just fitted a new LCD to my L300 following you instructions, however found out there is no need for the keyboard to be removed it’s fine just unscrewing the LCD bezel.
Cheers though.

Doodle Jim,
I was removing the keyboard and top cover only because I had to replace the video cable. When you are replacing just the screen there is no need for removing the top cover and keyboard.

I won’t wast my time with sight anymore

Thanks to all who post here! I was able to replace my damaged LCD screen on my Toshiba L305 for $115 inc shipping from screencountry.com rather than go thru the Toshiba service dealer who wanted $269+
After all, i only paid $315 inc tax thru Best Buy for the pc originally.
This is what the consumer movement is all about: knowledge!

Hi,
I am not able to remove an unmarked screw at the back of Toshiba Satellite L305 laptop. I have removed all the marked screws but only one screw below the battery which is unmarked cannot be removed. Help please..
Thanks

If I would like to remove and replace only the keyboard, rather than the LCD screen, can I just follow steps 2 through 5, or must I remove the eleven screws from step 1 as well? Are those two screws from step 3 the only ones holding the keyboard in place?
February 25th, 2010 at 9:44 am
Raymond,
Yes, just follow steps 2-5.
I believe there are no screws securing the keyboard on the bottom.

Manny,
Are you asking about the screw securing the memory cover? A small hex screw with a pin in the middle?
You can remove this screw with a small flat head screwdriver.

jarred toshiba l305 laptop while running, now getting unmountable boot volume message and stop codes 0X000000ED (0X85D31D68, 0XC0000185, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). making funny noise when trying to start. no luck with safe mode. try resetting hard drive, maybe? know how? thanks, nick

Nick,
Is the noise coming from the hard drive area? Could be bad hard drive.
You can remove the hard drive and boot the laptop from Live Linux CD (Knoppix for example). If the laptop works fine with Knoppix, most likely the hardware is good.
Here’s how to create and boot from Knoppix CD.

Hi. I replaced my Toshiba Satellite L305’s broken screen with a friend’s Toshiba screen. His inverter wasn’t working so I used mine (well, the same type as mine, my original inverter broke so I ordered one online). The screen back light would stop working randomly or anytime there’s a drastic resolution change, like when I hook it up to my television and unhook it or closing the lid then reopening it. I would open the lid and the screen would flash on for a second then the back light would turn off again. Also when ever the brightness goes down to a certain level, the inverter a loud noise. Is the problem the compatibility with the screen and the inverter?

Hello All!
First, I’d like to thank cj2600 for the awesome guide! Very detailed. I like your work. I also wanted to see if you have a suggestion regarding my video card. Can it be replaced at all? I have seen many hits on google stating that you can’t. I have an L305 and need better graphics for using sketchup and Autodesk Revitt Architecture, 3D software. Anyways, a detailed guide such as the one you posted but for replacing my graphics card is what I need. Hopefully this can be done.
