How to remove motherboard from Toshiba Satellite L40 or L45 laptop
These instructions will help you to remove the motherboard from a Toshiba Satellite L40 or L45 laptop. I believe both models are very similar but have different names. Satellite L40 is sold in Europe and Satellite L45 is sold in the USA.
The laptop disassembly steps will not be much different from many other Toshiba laptops. Some key laptop component such as the hard drive, memory, wireless card, modem and CD/DVD drive can be accessed from the bottom of the laptop without taking the whole thing apart. Check out steps 1-6.
If you are replacing the keyboard, you’ll have to remove two screws from the bottom of the laptop. You can see them on the picture 6. They are on the left and right sides from memory slots. And after that you proceed to steps 12 and 13.
The cooling fan can be removed after you remove the top cover assembly as it shown in the step 16.

I don’t have instructions for a Satellite L40/L45 laptop but it will not be much different from any other Toshiba laptop. You can use this guide for a Satellite M45 laptop as an example.

You cannot. The video card is integrated into the motherboard and cannot be removed/replaced/upgraded. You are stuck with what you got.

Thanks for a great guide. I have an L40 which keeps going to sleep at random while in use. I believe it may be caused by a faulty lid-closed sensor, since the prob doesn’t occur when the machine is booted to MemTest86 or a Linux LiveCd, and it is greatly reduced when Windows Vista is set to “do nothing” when closing the lid.
Where is the lid sensor on this model, and what does it look like – I don’t see any sign of the “push in” button type things that did the job on older models.

Hi, I have a L40-10Q.
I have done exactely as your guide describes, but still I cannot open the laptop.
It is as if some screws are holding the keypad. And I cannot find it. However I assume it to be under the silver topside plastic. However this plastic cannot be removed seperately ?

Where is the BIOS battery located? I have forgotten my BIOS password, and now I can’t get on my laptop.

Removing/disconnecting the BIOS battery will not help to clear the BIOS password.
