Removing LCD screen and inverter board from Toshiba Satellite A300 A305

Here’s how you can remove the LCD screen and inverter board from Toshiba Satellite A300 and A305 laptops. Both models are very similar.

Unfortunately, the screen and inverter removal procedure is not as simple on many other Toshiba models. In Satellite A300/A305 it’s very hard to remove the screen bezel unless you remove the top cover first and because of that the disassembly process will have two parts.

In the first part (disassembly steps 1-8) I will be removing the top cover assembly.

In the second part (steps 6-19) I explain how to open up the display panel and remove the LCD screen with inverter board. Both the LCD screen and inverter board are very fragile parts and have to be handled very carefully. Do not touch the LCD circuit board. Make sure not to bent the inverter board while disconnecting it from the laptop.

If after the repair the LCD screen doesn’t light up or there is no image on the screen, check the video cable. Make sure all connectors are plugged correctly.

In the previous post I explained the motherboard removal procedure.

Ridiculously difficult laptop to work on. Lower screen beziel is by far the worst I’ve came across. Put a large flat screwdriver on the right hand side just above where the LCD cables go and rotate it clockwise until you hear it crack. Repeat on left hand side (obviously anti-clockwise). Needs a scary amount of pressure.

Removing the top of the A305 and keyboard to change the screen is not necessary and risky in my opinion. I had a very hard time trying to remove the lower part of the bezel however, until I discovered the location of the joint at the back side of the bezel (along the ridge) which was not easy to find, and which also needs to be pried open (like the sides of the bezel) with a sharp tool. Then an object (like a screwdriver) needs to be inserted into the side of the front part of bezel near the hinge, into another subtle joint, so as to pry the bezel forward and free it to be pulled off.

Hi Now im no noob but removing the top bezel seems to be overly difficult. I know you said all you can really do is feel your way but this one seems to be glued down? Is there a particular place to start/pry apart with a screwdriver? Perhaps a video of it being done? This is the first modern Tosh I have handled and seems overly convoluted. many thanks

    george,

i was wondering where is the webcam plugged into? If the cable went loose what part of the computer do i have to open is it the screen or on the actual motherboard?

The webcam cable is plugged into the motherboard. In order to access the cable you’ll have to remove the top cover assembly. You’ll find guide at http://www.irisvista.com/tech/

Incredible guide, thank you very much! It is very helpful!

I was wondering, since you mention it is possible to remove the screen bezel without removing the top cover, how would one go about doing this?

I’ve completely detached the bezel from the entire screen save for the bit that curls around the inverter, and I don’t really want to remove the keyboard/top cover. I know you said it’s difficult, but even so, it must be possible, no?

    Thanks a lot,
    Dan

    Hi

I have a Toshiba A300 and have been experiencing problems with the backlight. What started as flickering has now progressed to the backlight shutting down altogether, and me having to close the lid. Upon opening the screen opens and the laptop then shuts itself down. When the laptop comes back on it will often go blank straight away and I have to repeat the whole process again. It seems to depend on what angle I open the screen to. Also the problem seems to be amplified if I am on battery power alone, often resulting in me having to plug in the ac adapter.

I have followed your advice and connected an old external monitor to the laptop and strangely cannot replicate the problem with the monitor plugged in! When I unplugged the monitor and moved the screen everything is fine except for the odd flicker. Now not sure what is going on, can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Andrew.

i already did unlock the keyboard connector. I put everything back together again but the screen is just black. does this mean i broke the invertor board while replacing the screen?

thanks so much i figured it all out and disassembled and reassembled everything i followed the directions all the way through and then re did it backwards to reassemble.
but my screen is not lighting up at all, i can here my computer starting like normal and everything but i hae no screen i know that is not specific put do you think you can give me a list of possible things that i could have easily done wrong?
i know the first time i did it i hoocked one of the wires to the inverted backwards(pink cable where the white one should have been). couldthat have broken it?
thanks again for all your help.

    cj2600 Says:

    Carley9090,
There is a link at the beginning of the guide called
A few things to know before you start taking your laptop apart
You’ll find instructions how to unlock the keyboard connector in there.

  24. 30
    carley9090 Says:

this is where i am stuck how do i “unlock the connector…[and] pull the cable”?
    STEP 5

Carefully lift up the keyboard so you can access the cable.
Disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard.
    First – unlock the connector.
Second – pull the cable and remove the keyboard.

Nice job. A coworker asked me to replace the screen on her laptop. I had never done one before. The instructions that came with the replacement panel were inadequate and didn’t even go into removing the top cover to access the lower screws on the bezel.

Using the photos and instructions on this website I was able to successfully replace the screen and the laptop works fine, now.
