Removing LCD screen and inverter board from Toshiba Satellite A300 A305
Here’s how you can remove the LCD screen and inverter board from Toshiba Satellite A300 and A305 laptops. Both models are very similar.
Unfortunately, the screen and inverter removal procedure is not as simple on many other Toshiba models. In Satellite A300/A305 it’s very hard to remove the screen bezel unless you remove the top cover first and because of that the disassembly process will have two parts.
In the first part (disassembly steps 1-8) I will be removing the top cover assembly.
In the second part (steps 6-19) I explain how to open up the display panel and remove the LCD screen with inverter board. Both the LCD screen and inverter board are very fragile parts and have to be handled very carefully. Do not touch the LCD circuit board. Make sure not to bent the inverter board while disconnecting it from the laptop.
If after the repair the LCD screen doesn’t light up or there is no image on the screen, check the video cable. Make sure all connectors are plugged correctly.
In the previous post I explained the motherboard removal procedure.

My Satellite A305 has faulty video. The screen is so dark that I can barely see the image.
I know it’s bad inverter or backligth. Do you know part numbers for the inverter and screen so I can find a replacment?
My laptop is Satellite A305-S6905. Model number: PSAG8U-04001W.
Thanks.

John,
You can use the following parts.
LCD screen: V000120050, V000120060, V000120070, V000120080.
Inverter board: V000120220, V000120230.
Google part number or search them on eBay. It’s up to you.
By the way, if you still can see the image, most likely it’s bad inverter. Try replacing the inverter first.

I’m stuck on step 13. The bottom part of the screen bezel that looks like the top of the hinge wont budge. It is an a305-s6872.
Any tips or futher explanation?

Barb,
Did you remove the top cover before removing the screen bezel?
June 11th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Yes. The keyboard and top cover are gone. I’ve removed all of the screws and unsnapped the screen bezel all the way around the screen. I am just not getting the “hinge cover” to budge.
June 11th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Barb,
Thy this. Instead of trying to budge the cover, insert a small flat head screwdriver under the cover and pull it towards yourself. I know that it’s not easy but I cannot explain how to remove the cover. You have to feel that.

Thanks cj2600. I got it.
None of the other Toshibas were this tough.
June 11th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I know. That’s why I recommend removing the top cover. Without removing the top cover it will be very very hard.
Good luck!

Hi, I just resoldered the DC jack on an Acer Travelmate 2200. After I assembled the laptop, there is no picture at all. External monitor shows nothing as well. What do you think I can do? (It’s slightly off topic – sorry). Thanks
September 20th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
pcmemoirs,
I assume you soldered the power jack correctly and the motherboard gets power from the adapter.
First of all, check RAM modules. Make sure they are seated correctly.
In order to get video on the external monitor all you need is: motherboard, RAM and CPU.

hi.. i accidentaly step on my Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop and broke the lcd screen.. i know i have to buy a lcd sreen replacemnt.. but do i also have to replace the inverter.. thanx..
October 14th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
nigz,
Most likely not.
If the broken screen still lights up when the laptop is turned on, you don’t need the inverter board.
Even if the screen remains black, the inverter still could be OK. It’s possible that the broken screen is dark because the backlight lamp inside the screen is broken.
Order just the screen for now.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
thanks cj.. the screen still lights up.. its just there’s a dark line thing inside that looks like a crack.. but the other part of the screen that doesnt hav that line still lights up.. tnx
October 14th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
That means you don’t need a new inverter.
October 14th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
thank you very much cj…

Nice job. A coworker asked me to replace the screen on her laptop. I had never done one before. The instructions that came with the replacement panel were inadequate and didn’t even go into removing the top cover to access the lower screws on the bezel.
Using the photos and instructions on this website I was able to successfully replace the screen and the laptop works fine, now.

I followed these steps to replace LCD on an A305. The computer works great for a while but then will just go white. It works on an external monitor just fine. Any ideas?

Hi,
I have a toshiba A305, the display suddenly went blurred (it is very hard to read the text). I tried the VGA output and it is OK. Which could have cause the problem, the LCD or the inverter?

STEP 5
Carefully lift up the keyboard so you can access the cable.
Disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard.
First – unlock the connector.
Second – pull the cable and remove the keyboard.

Carley9090,
There is a link at the beginning of the guide called
A few things to know before you start taking your laptop apart
You’ll find instructions how to unlock the keyboard connector in there.
January 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
thanks so much i figured it all out and disassembled and reassembled everything i followed the directions all the way through and then re did it backwards to reassemble.
but my screen is not lighting up at all, i can here my computer starting like normal and everything but i hae no screen i know that is not specific put do you think you can give me a list of possible things that i could have easily done wrong?
i know the first time i did it i hoocked one of the wires to the inverted backwards(pink cable where the white one should have been). couldthat have broken it?
thanks again for all your help.
January 12th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
i already check the video cable like you said to and the cable connected to the inverter. i took it all apart and did it again following your instructions. and it still doesnt work.
January 12th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I have a Toshiba A300-15D Laptop which is around a year old. I have been facing the problem of a flickering monitor which happens only for a few seconds. Please suggest if i need to change the lcd inverter or jst need to clean the hinges of the laptop. thank you – Khurshed
January 20th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
what do you mean cj2600?
i already did unlock the keyboard connector. I put everything back together again but the screen is just black. does this mean i broke the invertor board while replacing the screen?
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:38 am
Hi
I have a Toshiba A300 and have been experiencing problems with the backlight. What started as flickering has now progressed to the backlight shutting down altogether, and me having to close the lid. Upon opening the screen opens and the laptop then shuts itself down. When the laptop comes back on it will often go blank straight away and I have to repeat the whole process again. It seems to depend on what angle I open the screen to. Also the problem seems to be amplified if I am on battery power alone, often resulting in me having to plug in the ac adapter.
I have followed your advice and connected an old external monitor to the laptop and strangely cannot replicate the problem with the monitor plugged in! When I unplugged the monitor and moved the screen everything is fine except for the odd flicker. Now not sure what is going on, can anyone help?
Thanks
Andrew.

Incredible guide, thank you very much! It is very helpful!
I was wondering, since you mention it is possible to remove the screen bezel without removing the top cover, how would one go about doing this?
I’ve completely detached the bezel from the entire screen save for the bit that curls around the inverter, and I don’t really want to remove the keyboard/top cover. I know you said it’s difficult, but even so, it must be possible, no?
Thanks a lot,
Dan

hi there – i was wondering where is the webcam plugged into? If the cable went loose what part of the computer do i have to open is it the screen or on the actual motherboard?
April 24th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
george,
The webcam cable is plugged into the motherboard. In order to access the cable you’ll have to remove the top cover assembly. You’ll find guide at http://www.irisvista.com/tech/

Hi Now im no noob but removing the top bezel seems to be overly difficult. I know you said all you can really do is feel your way but this one seems to be glued down? Is there a particular place to start/pry apart with a screwdriver? Perhaps a video of it being done? This is the first modern Tosh I have handled and seems overly convoluted. many thanks

Removing the top of the A305 and keyboard to change the screen is not necessary and risky in my opinion. I had a very hard time trying to remove the lower part of the bezel however, until I discovered the location of the joint at the back side of the bezel (along the ridge) which was not easy to find, and which also needs to be pried open (like the sides of the bezel) with a sharp tool. Then an object (like a screwdriver) needs to be inserted into the side of the front part of bezel near the hinge, into another subtle joint, so as to pry the bezel forward and free it to be pulled off.

Ridiculously difficult laptop to work on. Lower screen beziel is by far the worst I’ve came across. Put a large flat screwdriver on the right hand side just above where the LCD cables go and rotate it clockwise until you hear it crack. Repeat on left hand side (obviously anti-clockwise). Needs a scary amount of pressure.
