How to replace LCD screen and screen inverter on Toshiba Satellite P205 laptop

Replace LCD inverter Toshiba Satellite P205These instructions will help you to replace the LCD screen and the screen inverter on a Toshiba Satellite P205 series laptops.

Removing the display bezel can be a little bit tricky on this model because of its shape. Start removing the bezel from the top. After all latches on the top and both sides of the bezel had been disengaged, you can move to the bottom part of the bezel as it shown on the picture 5. Take your time. This is one of them most difficult display bezels to remove. When you install the bezel back on the display panel, pay attention to wireless antenna cables running on both sides of the screen. Do not pinch cables. Removing and installing the bezel is the hardest part in this disassembly.
Removing and replacing the LCD screen and the screen inverter will not be much different then replacing these parts on any other Toshiba laptop.

I have one of these, the screen goes blank when I move it away from me, and comes back when I swivel it towards me.

I assume its a cable either loose or kinked, can I just replace the cable, or do I have to replace the whole display?

    Toshiba wants $400+!!

    Thanks!

Yes, you can replace the cable without replacing the whole display assembly.
If you give me the laptop model number (it’s on the same sticker with the serial number) I can find the video cable part number, so you can search for the replacement cable.

    Hi, thanks for writing back.

    The model number is P205-S6237.

I guess the way to proceed is to take off the display, and check the connections are firm, and then jiggle the cord to see if that causes the same problem.

I doubt it is the hinge switch, since, if that were somehow off alignment, it would be going to sleep, not blanking the display.

I can hook it to an exeternal monitor and see the laptop but it takes forever to get the display on the actual laptop to come on. the normal FN+F5 doesnt work. Its getting worse and worse. Should I replace the monitor.

    Hi,
My display goes off if I push the top away from me but comes back on as I pull it towards me. I took the bezel off and if I move the wire(s)in the bundle on the left side by the hinge, the display will come on when I push the screen away from me. Is this the wires or the inverter? How do I tell? My model is P205 S6347.

Toshiba model # P205 S6347. My laptop is having the same hardware issue as stated by Pat on January 2nd. If the LCD panel is opened past about 85 degrees the screen pixelates, and when it is moved back the screen funcitons properly. Do you know what is causing this issue, and how it might be resolved? Please advise and many thanks!

sounds a bit like my prob, theres a wiring goes from the vid card to the moniter, snakes thru the hinge. It can get crinkled and shorted out, and will need to be replaced. I think the cord is like 50$, the guy who runs this site can tell you the part number and perhaps order it for you.

You can find them on eBay, just search for Satellite L20 hinges. They are proximately $20-40 for both left and right hinges.

Usually Toshiba place the part number on a sticker glued to the inverter. I believe in a Satellite A25-S308 you can use the following inverters: P000354880 or P000352650.
You don’t have to open the screen, you have to take apart the display assembly. The inverter board is mounted under the LCD screen. Basically, all you have to do is remove the display bezel, unplug the old inverter and plug in the new one.
The display disassembly steps are very similar for most Toshiba laptops. Read through a few guides on http://www.irisvista.com/tech/ and you’ll get the idea.

It’s hard to tell. I think it’s either connection related issue or bad cable. Usually, when inverter fails, you cannot make it work by moving the screen.
    1. Try reconnecting the video cable on the back of the LCD screen.
    2. Try replacing the cable.

Also, your problem could be related to the screen itself but I would try reseating/replacing the cable first.

I guess you’ll have to try same solution I just suggested to Pat.
Try reconnecting the cable and if doesn’t help, try replacing it with a new one. You should find the part number on the sticker glued to the cable. Google the part number and you’ll find the cable.
I don’t think that your problem is related to the LCD screen.

Yes, I can look up the part number but I’m not going to order a new cable for you. :)
Let me know the laptop model number and if it was sold in the United States, I might be able to find the part number you are looking for.

My friend has the Satillite P205 also and is having the same lid problem when he puts the lid up past about 33 degrees the screen goes off. I opened the laptop up and did verify that the left wiring harness going through the hinge bezel is in fact not adaquately protected. I removed the thin harness and found broken wires. I believe this is an engineering defect but don’t know if they’ll stand behind it. I will attempt repair and wrap a thicker coating of flexible tape around the wires.

I just received a laptop from a friend who spilled a small amount of wine on it. P205-S8810 is the model. I recently took the entire laptop apart and cleaned anything that looked “dirty”. There is MINOR corrosion on the spot where the touchpad plugs into the motherboard, but the connection appears to still be ‘fine’. I try to power on the laptop and everything sounds like it is going fine but the video card fan stops after about 3 seconds and then everything sounds like it is in a an idle stage and does nothing. Nothing shows up on the monitor and nothing appears on an external screen either. Everything else appears to be functional. I’m just wondering, what would exactly cause the initial boot to stop and most likely fail post and nothing appear on the screen at all. If it is the motherboard then I am willing to spend ~$300 for a new motherboard and replace it… But if it is something else that could be fixed by replacing a chip or re-soldering a connection that would be great. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    Problem on Post 11, Dave’s P205

I had the same problem and found an area on the back of the screen about one inch down, under the tape that did not have pressure on the edge of the screen. I could tell by applying pressure between my fingers in a pinch mode. I had the screen lose at the time. When I held the pressure the screen worked fine. To fix I cut a peice rigid foam 1″L X 1/2″W X 1/16″T from a hobby store and taped in place from the side metal to the screen holding pressure on the foam. Do not put the foam on the metal side piece. It has been working two weeks with no problems. I hope this helps someone. Thanks for the other information on how to disassemble which helped me greatly.

I just received a clients laptop about two weeks ago with this issue. A Satellite P205-S6347. He finally told me, on Friday last week, that his son was experiencing these issues all the way up until its failure. I’ve tested two seperate LCDs, one of which was new, and three separate inverters, two of which were new, to absolutely no effect. You can see the faint image of the windows desktop in the background but there’s no backlight. My last, final, attempt would be the LCD data cable. Anyhow, I was hoping that someone had some advice or perhaps success stories in relation to the data cable, before I tell my client to purchase one. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you should be able to remove and replace the LCD screen without removing the inverter board. But you still have to disconnect the backlight connector from the right side of the inverter.

When changing the exhaust fan I inadvently pulled out a black wire from a connector on my video card. This black wire and adjoining white wire go to my LCD display. They have a snap on end that snaps on to the video card. Where can I find those wires to replace the one I have. I have a Toshiba model A105-S101 laptop. And if you could give me a part number as there is none to be found on the wires.
