Disassembly instructions for Toshiba Satellite L30 and L35 laptops
Disassembly instructions for Toshiba Satellite L35 laptop, should be similar to Toshiba Satellite L30.
I’ve created two different instructions for the display panel and the laptop base.
The first guide explains how to get inside the laptop display panel. You can use this guide for removing or replacing LCD screen and inverter. Steps for taking apart the display panel are pretty standard, you can use it for many other Toshiba laptops.
The second guide has step-by-step instructions for removing all internal parts inside the laptop base. It will help removing hard drive, keyboard, memory, DVD drive, motherboard, cooling fan, CPU and other major parts.

I have the same problem as described in posts 27 from Mark Hadfield and 36 from Mary! Funny, but both times I visited the local Toshiba service, the computer (L-30) started OK, and I could not demonstrate the problem to the technicians!:( I wonder if Mark and Mary would like to write to say how they dealt with this problem?

I have an l39 with the dim screen problem. I have checked the voltages on the input pins and if the bottom one which is connected to earth is pin 1 then there is 3.5v between pins 1 and 2 and 16-18v between pins 1 and 5. No pin 4 and nothing manful on pin 3. I have tried afew replacement converters and none work. Could it be a problem with the screen switch. If this were stuck on closed would the voltages still be on the pins as I have described above
Btw there is nothing on the output ins of any of the inverters I have tried
Thanks

I have a L30 toshiba satellite laptop. When I switch the laptop on the LED’s light green and then the battery turns to orange. The fan also works. But nothing comes on the screen. What can be the problem?

Thanks for this post, it was very helpful to me while stripping my L30 10Y laptop to perform a CPU upgrade, which was also successful!
Keep up the good work!

Craig,
Maybe one of the memory modules is not seated correctly. Try reconnecting memory modules.

Mark Hadfield,
I hope it’s not just a bad AC adapter. Maybe it’s not working when loaded? It’s unlikely but possible.
Looks like you’ve replaced all main parts but no help. Now you’ll have to minimize the system as much as possible and see if it works when minimized.
Leave just motherboard, CPU and memory. Make sure the CPU is LOCKED in the socket. Make sure RAM seated properly. If the system still turns on for 3 sec and turns off, most likely it’s defective motherboard.

Hi, I have a toshiba satellite L30-113. When the power button is pressed the power light comes on for about 3 seconds then goes off. The fan runs for the same amount of time then stops. I have replaced the motherboard, processor and fan. Still the same. I even changed the ram out and still the same. The hard drive I have taken out and read from it on my other laptop and all the files look fine.
Help I am stuck as to what to do next?????????
Thanks
Mark

BaRTnfo,
Could be the video cable failure (not common but happens).
Could be stuck lid close switch. Maybe the switch is stuck in the closed position and the laptop “thinks” that the display is closed even though it is opened. This is also not very common failure.

I Currently have a Satallite L30 with dim screen, checked the inverter but thats ok, seems that its a problem with power going to the inverter from the motherboard
The Screen is OK, as Ran another invertor from another laptop to power the backlight.
So, anyone know of a common fault on the motherboards than can fail to provide the power???
Dont know whats going on with Tosh’s these days but had so many over the last 7-8 years with backlight faults!!

John,
1. Try reconnecting the video cable on both the motherboard and LCD screen.
2. Try replacing the video cable.
3. Replace the LCD screen.

Hi,
I have an L30, and it has a screen fault, the laptop powers up and the screen illumination is ok, but instesd of graphics I get horisontal and vertical lines on the screen, they are colourfull and bright, also if conected to external monitor I get a normal display, so I think the graphics chip is ok.. any ideas ?
thanks John

Pearlene,
I linked to the laptop disassembly guide in the post. The guide explains how to replace the keyboard.
It’s not difficult, takes only 10-15 minutes.
Here’s the link again: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-L35/taking-apart-laptop-1.htm

Hi, thanks for the input.
Where can I find the lid closed switch?
August 25th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Pete Tyler,
I assume that new inverter and LCD were good.
Could be bad video cable or motherboard problem.
Also, do you have the lid close switch – a small button which turns off the backlight when the display is closed. Make sure this button moves freely.
When the lid close button gets dirty, it might get stuck inside the case and the laptop “thinks” the display is closed even though it’s opened.

Pete Tyler,
In most cases a new inverter and LCD can fix the problem. If not, there could be something wrong with the video cable or motherboard.

I’ve changed the inverter board AND the LCD, and still get a dim display. Laptop boots fine connected to monitor. What could be the problem?

mike,
You’ll find instructions fro replacing the LCD screen in a Satellite L35 laptop here.
I think so. They all have screens with similar resolution so it should be compatible across all models.
July 20th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
I’m curious if the l35 models are all cross compatible.. will a screen (maybe not just the lcd, but whole top part) work on s1054 model?….
the cord that plugs into the motherboard and the screws I would think are the same.. I can’t find an actual toshiba repair guide on the internet that outlines this stuff.. any ideas…?
appreciate the help!?

These instructions were very helpful. Thank you!

Right i just recently got one of these second hand. All was going well, fresh install of xp. And then when i was installing the drivers for the wireless the system froze, and wouldnt turn off no matter what i did. I even held down the button for 5 minute. As it had an updated 3h long battery i decided (foolishly to pull it out). System turned off. Fine.
Plugged it back in and the screen didn’t turn on. Just remained black. I pluged the VGA into my monitor to see if it was the screen but that doesnt load anything up, i tried the fn f5 thing as well but wasnt sure when too push it so just tried randomly.
However the bios was still set to cd-rom boot, and you can hear the cd drive boot up as normal when you turn the power on just you cant see anything.
What is causing this?, do i need to replaced the back lite or inverter?, or is the computer just screwed.
Any help would be appreciated i was supposed to be setting it up for a relative!

mark,
1. Your new inverter could be defective.
2. You have a problem with the backlight lamp inside the LCD screeen and there is nothing wrong with the inverter.
May 7th, 2009 at 8:37 am
hi, av got an toshiba l30 and i can just see the logos on my screen even tho its went dark, i knew it was the inverter. so i put a new inverter into it and the light came bk on, but then it went off straight away so if i put a new inverter into it and it worked then how come it went straight off when i put the new inverter in?

I love you!!! I burned myself and flung soup on my laptop recently, but had not clue how to get my keyboard out to repair it!!! You may have saved me a 100 bucks… or more! Thank you!! This is the true definition of an instruction manual!

Reena,
This description sounds like a bad inverter board or backlight lamp failure.
This part sounds like a connection related issue or a problem with the video cable.
The first thing to try would be reseating cables on the inverter board, maybe they got loose. If reseating cables doesn’t help, try to find out if you can turn on the backlight by moving or touching the video cable. If you can, it’s possible there is a short inside the cable and it has to be replaced.
If moving or touching the cable doesn’t help, apparently it’s not related to the cable. Try replacing the inverter board.
Usually it’s not expensive. In most cases you’ll be able to find one for about $20-30.
When inverter or backlight fails you still can use the laptop with an external monitor attached to the VGA port. Connect the monitor and restart the laptop. The external monitor will be detected automatically. If it’s not detected, switch video from internal to external mode with a shortcut on the keyboard. For Toshibas it’s Fn key + F5.
