Taking apart Toshiba Satellite P100 and P105 notebooks
These guide will show how to take apart Toshiba Satellite P100 and P105 notebooks. This model is very similar to many other Toshiba models and shares the same disassembly steps.
In order to remove the DVD drive on this model you’ll have to get under the keyboard and remove one screw securing the drive. For the DVD drive removal follow steps 5,6,7,13. The screw witch secures the DVD drive is shown on the step 12.
If you are replacing the keyboard, it’s not necessary to remove all screws and parts from the bottom of the laptop. Just pop up the keyboard bezel, remove six keyboard screws, disconnect the keyboard from the motherboard and replace it. For the keyboard replacement follow steps 5,6,7.
This disassembly guide would be the same for a Toshiba Satellite P100 notebook, except that P100 has a discrete video card pictured on the step 21.

Hi
Thanks for providing the guides – very kind.
I’m tring to access the interior of my P100 to investigate what damage has been caused by mistakenly attaching an 18v supply. (Is there a fuse or such inside?)
I have followed the instructions and removed all the screws shown on the diagram but the underside of the casing will not detach. It seems to be held somewhere in the middle (the perimeter opens to a gap of about 2cm all round). Once the screws are removed are there any clips to release in order to remove the base?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Great handy guide! I followed it to replace the fan/heatsink. But……….now after reassembly there is no SOUND. Took it all back apart (after sucessful reassemble and startup!) and rechecked all the wires/sound card. All looked good; no sound on bootup. Next, removed sound card device manager, reboot, reinstalled sound card driver automatically; says working…still no sound. Ideas?

Kyle,
I believe in a Satellite P105 the DC jack mounts to the base assembly. If the mounting bracket is broken, you’ll have to replace the base assembly or find another way to mount the jack.
Base assembly part number: A000005670.

Larry,
The black plastic piece is the locking clip. The connector opens like a door on hinges. Take a look at this picture: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/images/Acer-TravelMate-3260/remove-power-board-08.jpg
It’s same type of the connector. It’s shown in the unlocked position.

Step 7 could use a little more detail and the alternative pics showing the keyboard connector do not help on a p105. I am stuck not know how to remove the ribbon keyboard cable i see no locking connector on mine. Can someone please help. All i see are a white plastive and a black plastic on the ribbon cable.

Thank you so much for helping me solve my problem. My DVD drive had disappeared from my device manager in windows xp due to a nasty virus/trojan/security issue. I removed the DVD and hard drive with your help reinstalling the DVD drive I could get back to recovery disk and rid my hard drive of demons….your manual, especially the pictures were simple and removed the fear!!! Thanks again for helping out.

This guide is terrific. Had a dead power inverter, even though I didn’t notice a section on disassembling the screen, this guide made cracking into my notebook and replacing the inverter surprisingly easy.
Hats off, excellent job with this guide. I wish you much success.

I have a P100 that has heat/rebooting issues so was going to take a stab at cleaning the heatsinks/fans. Are there specific steps for this (ie keyboard replacement perform steps 5,6,7) or do I need to do them all and pull all the bottom and top apart?
Thanks for the help and for the awesome guide!

I’m having the screen goes black (and stays black) P105-S9337 problem. You can hear the HD running and status lights flash. The computer boots and I can log on with the finger print scanner. I’d like to find a diagnosis before I buy parts. I shone a flashlight on the screen and there is nothing there. What is causing this?

quin,
Two thin lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen? Sounds like a problem with the screen. You’ll have to replace the LCD screen.

Tom C,
As I mentioned in my previous comment, in some Satellite P105 laptops the video card is a discrete unit. If that’s the case, you’ll find the video card under the motherboard.

Kevin,
Some Satellite P105 laptops have discrete video cards and I believe P105-S9337 is one of them.
The video card is located under the motherboard. You should be able to see the video card if you remove the memory cover and look inside the laptop case.
Here are part numbers for a new video card:
nVidia G71M with 256MB VRAM: A000006510
nVidia G71M-U, with 512MB VRAM: A000006860 or A000039750.
You’ll have to remove the motherboard from the laptop case in order to access and replace the video card.
Before you buy the card, please contact the seller and make sure it fits your laptop. I’m pretty sure it will fit but contact them just in case.

stu,
Check the memory modules. Make sure both modules are seated correctly. Probably it’s memory related problem.

niall taylor,
There are two cables running through the right hinge. They are antennas for the wireless card. Both cables are connected to the wireless card.

Hi,
What is the cable that runs through the right hand side hinge as mine has snapped along with the hinge and cover, have got all parts on order, but dont have a clue what this cable is??

my DC in jack came unplugged from the motherboard, so I followed this guide to take my P105-S6177 apart. It worked great, I fixed the jack, but now the computer will turn on but the screen will stay blank. The power light on the computer turns on, I can hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen doesn’t do anything. I tried plugging in an external monitor, but that didn’t show anything either. What could be causing this?

I have P105-S9337 I think my VGA is fried (well, broken) cuz I keep getting horizontal stripes across the screen and it keeps doing that even when I plug it to external monitor so i narrowed it down to VGA.
now, the thing is, is it possible to replace the VGA? I found a website that sells graphics board, so will it be possible to just replace that board? I thought P105 series has integrated graphics card
August 7th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Dan,
These cables are not standard, they are model (Satellite P105) specific.
Here are part numbers you can use:
1. For the cable connecting the main board with the switch board (button board cable): A000006060 – for units with Bluetooth capabilities.
2. For the cable connecting the main board with the audio board (audio board cable): A000006040

I have a P105 and the ribbon cables connecting the main board with the switch board and the main board with the sound board are all mangled (don’t ask).
any idea where i can get replacement cables? they seem like pretty standard (maybe 20 pin, didnt count yet) cables.. approx 2″ and 3″ long…

I have P105, I think the graphic card is bad. sometimes it shows bright color horizontal bar and then the screen went black.I try to restart it and it’s still acting strange.
can you tell me where the vdo card is located? I have NVIDIA Go 7900 GS.
Many thanks

TK for this guide. I can not open my laptop whithout it.
I have a problem with it an i cant know if it is a hard or software problem: It seems that whenever I try to download a file, program, view a website etc…my screen will go completely white and restarts my computer. The problem does not appear in VGA or safe mode. I installed a recovery CD in a new hard disk and the problem persist. Also I was run a Microscope hardware test utility and it does not report anything bad. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Thanks a bunch for this guide, really helped me out cleaning my gf’s P100!

I have the same problem with my P100 as mentioned in the post 39/40. What could be the problem if the screen is really black?
Note: if I start the computer in safe mode, the screen will remain working, only the computer gets extremely hot.
July 21st, 2009 at 10:02 am
Kenneth,
When the screen goes black take a very close look at the screen. Is it really black or you still can see a very faint image?
If the faint image is still there, most likely you have a problem with the screen inverter – a power supply for the backlight lamp. The inverter board is located inside the display panel right under the LCD screen. It’s relatively easy to replace the inverter board and they are not expensive.
