Replacing broken hinges on a Toshiba Satellite A45 laptop
Guys, replacing broken hinges on this model is not for beginners. During this repair you’ll have to open up both the laptop case and the display case. A lot of steps, a lot of screws. If you are doing this repair yourself, get organized.
Steps 4 and 5 will shown how to access the heat sink. Yep, this model tends to overheat. If your laptop shuts down during normal operation, most likely it happens because of overheating. In this case access the heatsink and clean it.
Be careful when you are removing the LCD screen. Do not press on it, handle it very gently. Be careful with the top edge of the LCD screen, usually it has “Do not touch” sign, so do not touch it.
Here are part numbers you can use to find new hinges for your laptop.
There are two different modifications (not sure exactly what the difference is). Some laptops have letter “C” stamped in the battery bay, I believe somewhere on the case under the battery. Some laptops have letter “S”. In some cases you can find this letter stamped on the bottom of the laptop base, no in the battery bay.
OK, here are part numbers:
For laptop with letter “C”
Left hinge: P000392250
Right hinge: P000392260
For laptops with letter “S”
Left hinge: P000394150
Right hinge: P000394160

My laptop model is PSA80L-05N003.
Thanks in advance!

Last weekend I managed to successfully replace both hinges on my A45-S250. I just wanted to say thank you for providing your manual, I could not have pulled off the surgery without it. Between the new hinges and maxing out the RAM capacity, I have been able to breath new life into an old machine. Thanks again for all your hard work on the tutorial!

By the way, also you can find replacement hinges on eBay.

Tom,
There are two different types of hinges for Satellite A45 laptops. You’ll have to take a look on the bottom of the laptop and find out which case you have. Some of them have a letter “S” stamped on the bottom, other cases have a letter “C”. Most likely you’ll find it on the bottom, under the battery.
Which one do you have?

Hello everyone, this guide is fantastic, but I’ve had a big problem along the way… At “step 14″ of this guide we have to remove the speaker cables and LCD switch cable, unfortunately the little plastic plug on the end of one the cables crumbled into pieces when I unplugged it from the motherboard & now there’s no way get the 2 wires that no longer have a plug back into their slot! Based on the diagram photo in step14, it’s the furthest right with red & black wires, I’m guessing that the red & blacks are speaker cables and the blue & black is the LCD switch, please correct me if I’m wrong. So can anyone please tell me what the plugs are really called so I can search for a replacement online, or would it be possible to just solder the wires directly onto their terminals? If anyone has any ideas I’d really appreciate your input cos I’m stuck! Thanks for reading!

Hey R D….
I don’t know if I am supposed to post website addresses but look for the part number and encompass. Looks like they only have one side in stock now….
Create an email account, post the email address (I wouldn’t post your primary account) and I’ll send more info to you.

Steve B, can you list the website where you bought your hinges? Mine just broke and I need to order a pair.

I have significant experience building and repairing computers but had never done repairs on a laptop. Even with your step by step procedure it looked like a difficult task but I decided to try it… what was there to lose, the computer was useless with both hinges broken.
Your procedure and pictures are absolutely fantastic and necessary. I finished it in a couple of hours and the laptop feels like new.
One suggestion is to check for prices because I found prices that varied from $100 down to $10 per hinge. Why, I don’t know…. but I got them both delivered to my door for under $30!
Thanks for the help!

Thanks! This worked well for me. One must set aside 2 hours for this deal, or more if they’re to do it right.
I ordered two hinges, and I’m glad that I did, as the second one went out during the process. – I just wish that I had been able to find a WiFi antenna for this beast. I have a card, but no antenna.
Again, thanks!

Hi,
I’ve just repaired the hinges on my A40, got them for £10 inc delivery from ebay woohoo. However, the system fans are also faulty. They do not automtically start, however Speedfan detects my temperature sensors and is able to control the fans still. Hope this saves someone from replacing their fans, because it’s a pain in the ring, that’s for sure. No quick way to do it, full disassembly required boo hoo

The cover of my Toshiba A45-S120 is limp — cover will not stay in an upright position. Because of the VERY high price of replacement hinges … will the cover stay open if only ONE hinge is replaced? Any suggestions?
Walter
- I managed to get both replacement hinges on e-bay for just $50 bucks. You should try checking there to see if you can find a good deal.
