Getting inside Toshiba Satellite P20 and P25 laptop
This guide will help you to get inside a Toshiba Satellite P20 or P25 laptop. Let me tell you guys up front that taking this beast apart is not for beginners. Lots of screws, lots of connectors.
Some basic stuff like removing the hard drive, DVD drive, both memory modules, wireless card, modem or even the cooling fans with heatsink is not difficult, because all these part can be easily accessed from the bottom of the laptop. But removing and replacing the motherboard is kinda tricky.
If the laptop overheats – clean the heatsink. Just remove the cover and blow off the cooling module with compressed air. It’s not necessary to remove the heatsink in order to clean it up. In most cases cleaning it with compressed air will help you to fix or prevent the overheating issue.
You’ll have to remove the heatsink only if you are taking the whole thing apart, replacing the processor or applying new thermal grease on the processor. Be careful. When you pull the heatsink, most likely you’ll pull the processor too. It will come out attached to the heatsink. Carefully separate the processor and install it back into the socket. Make sure you unlock the socket before inserting the processor and lock it after it is installed. It will help you to keep the processor safe.
Here’s another guide. You can use this guide for taking apart the display panel. In this guide you’ll find illustrated instructions for removing or replacing LCD screen or inverter board.
Need spare parts for your laptop? Search here by the laptop model and part name or number.

Hi, I would like tothank you in advance for your advice, I have the P25 Satelite. I was wondering how to exchange the USB drives since in the midle of any operation I have to reboot the computer, it does not stay connected. the one on the side completely does not work. The SD card place also does not work. If you can provide any suggestion, it would be great. Oh, is there also a possibility to upgrade the graphic card to and memory to play games requiring more memory and better graphics. Oki sorry for asking all of those questions at once
Thanks in advance again

Hi, Thanks for the tip. You were right about the overheating issue. I never figured it out why my P20 keeps on shutting down before reading your article. Anyways, I got a major issue now about my P20. I accidentally pulled out the CPU whilst removing the heatsink (my bad). After thorough cleaning, I placed the CPU back to its original position and locked it. However, ever since I did this my PC won’t start up. Have I ruined my CPU? Although the power-up and DVD drive starts up, no display could be seen. Could you give me an insight how to remedy this problem? Really need your help here before I start buying a new CPU. Thanks in advance and hope to hear back from you soon.

I found the cmos battery on my P25-509. It’s located in the bottom compartment which contains the wireless card. Remove two screws to take the bottom cover off, release the wireless card (no need to disconnect the antennas) and carefully pry up the thin black plastic label at the bottom of the compartment. The cmos batter is under the label. It looks like an oversized disc capacitor and is soldered in. It has the numbers 3 7 on one face. I believe it is supposed to be 3.7 V.

Paul, check that you have the cpu in the correct way round, 1 corner of the cpu has a pin missing and there is a corresponding hole missing in the base, don’t forget to turn the screw and lock the cpu in place.

Hi Ackers, did the entire bit just like replacing a CPU, but still nothing changed. I have ordered a new CPU and still waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully this cures the problem. Will post again once I get my notebook working again. Cheers, Paul

Hello,
My Toshiba Satellite P20’s swivel hinge attached to the
screen has become disconnected/broken in one corner.
What is the safest way to remove this hinge. You can
see the metal part bulging underneath the screen that
keeps it from being moved back & forth. I think it was
a natural wear & tear of metal screws within a plastic
mount that eventually popped. Probably my only
option is to remove this part and have only one hinge
to close & open my screen. I don’t want to play
around with tools in this sensitive area and it would
be helpful to have a schematic of the hinge setup;or
a comment by someone who can guide me through the
process.

i had my total laptop apart and this was my first time ever trying this. i found a full guide on this site that took me step by step .
instead of using just one hinge ,i think i would try to buy one either from the manufacturer or from a site like ebay. maybe a laptop that is totally fried and the case is still in good shape.
i do know that i had both of the hinges on my exposed .on mine there is a cover that snaps of with the use of a small flathead screwdriver.i just put a smallpiece of metal under it so i did not mess up the case. i would still try and find a guide on this or another site.
good luck

Pretty cool info on taking apart the Toshiba P25…but it kinda skips past the part about getting the hard drive out. It shows the cover still on throughout the process. I got the screws out, but the cover doesn’t seem to want to come off. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

(Yeah, girls work on computer too!!! LOL)

Ok, figured out how to remove the hard drive. First remove the two screws on the hard drive bay cover. You have to slid your fingernail under the screw to be able to pull it out, otherwise it just spins. Second, remove the cover to the memory bay. There is a rectangular opening in the memory bay that goes into the hard drive bay. I used a small flat head screwdriver to in that opening and carefully pried it upward. It takes a little time, but it will come out. The hard drive is attached to the cover you are prying out.
Hope this helps the next person trying to replace the hard drive in this unit.

Hi, can someone please advice me how to boot a p25 satellite from an external device? The DVD player that comes with the machine does not work, thanks in advance for any help
January 27th, 2008 at 1:31 am
I want to reset the BIOS. I found the battery as Lyss Murphey said in comment 3 but it’s soldered. So, it’s a bit difficult to get it off. Do you know if there is any jumper by which I can clear CMOS?

I am taking apart a Toshiba P20 and having the hardest time getting the top cover off.. I have removed the keyboard and 7 screws as instructed but the cover won’t budge I tried sliding a blunt knife to pop the hinges, but that is not working either. Its bending the edges of the laptop and making a mess of it. What am I missing?? Please help.. I am trying to get to the graphics cable to see if that is why my graphics card is not working.
Thanks in advance.. Sandra
February 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
hi i have tried getting the link up but no luck has it been stopped do you know or is the site just down?? thanks
February 7th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Sandra,
Did you remove all screws from the bottom?
Did you test the laptop with an external monitor? If there is no external video, your problem is not related to the video cable.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Andrew,
The link is working fine for me.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
I did try with another monitor and it still would not work. It has vertical lines even on start up and will only work with the windows VGA driver, as soon as I install the nvidia driver it boots up to a blank screen. so I have to disable the driver in safe mode to get back in. And I did take out some of the screws from the bottom. Are you saying that I have to remove all and the components as well?? Thanks
February 8th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
its working again now thanks
March 20th, 2008 at 5:30 am
Sandra, the Nvidia chip has overheated. The only solution that I’ve yest discovered is to replace the motherbard, that is if you can locate one and even then it’ll cost you over £500. My P20 failed in Dec 06 when it was 26 months old after I’d paid £1299 for it. Toshiba GB bought it back off me for £620 after claiming that motherboards were unavailable. Amazingly they never bothered ever collecting it! Still works but only with Windows VGA driver and only after I’d managed to reinstall windows from another full copy of XP, not using the recovery disk that came with it. Total useless piece of junk I reckon and Toshiba obvoiusly know it.
March 20th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Thanks Lorna
I have given up on it and assigned it over to use as strictly office impute, and utilizing the VGA only, it seems to be ok for that..
I also have a P30 with a broken screen now that I would like to get running.. it works well with another monitor but I would like to get a new one for the mobility of it..
March 20th, 2008 at 11:43 am

Does anyone know where I can find a new hard drive for the P20-552?
Thank you
May 21st, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Rui Gomes: You can use any 2.5 IDE Hard disk . Just check Ebay, or any onlinestore. I replaced my HD . I had a 80 GB and changed it to a 120 GB.
May 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 am
Thanks Zonga,
Most of the 2.5 IDE Hard disk drives I find are 5400 rpm. My previous one was 4200 rpm. Is this a problem? Thanks for the help.
May 22nd, 2008 at 8:49 am
Nope , no problem, i use also a 5400 rpm, and its working pretty well…
June 6th, 2008 at 5:25 am
Hi, I have a Toshiba Satelite P20-771.
Which motherboards are compatible.
I am despirately seeking a 2nd hand one.
The ebay ones all sell P20, P25 ,etc as series.
Are these alla compatible?
Thanks
Greg
June 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Greg,
Take a look on the motherboard in the memory slots area. Try to find the motherboard part number, something like K000007530. After that you can google for the part number and find the right one.
July 3rd, 2008 at 9:32 am
Hi I have a Satellite P20, i had to replace the power supply because it was overheating and making strange noise. I bought a new one (OEM) and right now i can’t use the laptop, it keeps shutting down. I noticed that the battery led is lit when i power on the laptop but it goes off after a few seconds. Once in a while it stays on and i can use the laptop. I’ve tried using the laptop without the battery and i have the same problem. Do you think replacing the battery will solve my problem?
July 7th, 2008 at 3:51 am
I don´t thinks its a problem of the Batterie. Seams for me the OEM power supply is the wrong one, or is defective. Can you anyhow check if the voltage what comes out of the power supply is the right one?
Even the old one, with strange noise … is it still working? And if yes, does it let you start your notebook?
July 7th, 2008 at 3:59 am
Unfortunately i threw the old one away. I thought about the OEM power supply as well. That’s why i went to a big store and bought a “universal” laptop power supply and i still had the same problems with it. I guess you are right though, i should get a multimeter and verify the voltage that comes out of it. I’ll try to do this and i’ll post the results once it’s done.
Thanks…
July 7th, 2008 at 4:54 am
When i´m home i gonna check the voltage and the Amper you should get out of it.. I´m at work and my Notebook is at home..
July 11th, 2008 at 5:03 am
I bought a multimeter to check it out and i think that it doesn’t give enough amps for the laptop. It could explain the problems i am having. Just to make sure could you give me what voltage and amper you’re getting on yours?
Thanks,
Simon
July 11th, 2008 at 11:28 am
it should give you
19V 6.3A
Good luck!
July 11th, 2008 at 11:50 am
There you go! I’m getting 19V and barely 3.2A so that’s why i’m having all these problems. I’ve just ordered a new power adapter but this time it’s a Toshiba, not some third party OEM stuff. I should receive it on monday so i’ll post the results here.
Zonga thanks a lot for your help!
July 13th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Anytime
July 14th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Turns out the problem really was the power adapter. Received the new one today, it works perfectly i’m so happy! Thanks
July 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I have a P25 Satellite that all of a sudden started booting up with zeros all over the screen and some letters garbled. It will boot with normal looking video in safe mode but only goes so far as the Windows logo when booting normally as far as video goes although you can hear it finish booting. I get the same thing if I attach an external monitor and read elsewhere that if this is the case the video chip has come partially loose and more than likely the whole motherboard needs to be replaced. Supposedly this is a common issue with this computer and I would like to have it confirmed and also know if there are any alternatives other than replacing the motherboard. Thanks for any help!
July 20th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I replaced the dc jack connector, put it back together and the screen is black. I tried to use an external monitor to see if i didnt connect the lcd back but its not that. Its not booting up at all. I thought I didn’t screw the processor down correctly but it was not that. What else could it be?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:13 am
to: Mark Graffis , i would try a new windows at first. Since it is booting in Save mode as usual without any wild signs i doubt its the Video chip.
To Simon… I think i would confirm at first the dc jack connector. Is he corect placed? If just the screen stays black, check the cable what conects the LCD, at the backsite of the screen. I got this sometimes as well, that this cable got loose, and had to fix it again, Its just pluged and keeps holding with a simple pice of film. not that well made….

July 21st, 2008 at 9:21 am
After doing some more investigating I found that all the symptoms I have point to a ball grid array chip failure which is fairly common for his board. Unfortunately it cost about as much to replace the board as to repair it when it has this problem. I found I was able to boot normally after setting it on VGA mode in the boot menu but that leaves everything in very large size and it cannot be readjusted after booting that way.
August 17th, 2008 at 6:37 am
I have a p25-s609. When you boot it gives a error for the “A” drive. It doeesn’t have an “A” drive. I can’t find a place to internally install a floppy. I disabled in bios to go to hard drive or cd first and not to look for network or floppy. If i can get past that it tells me BOOTMGR missing clt+alt+del to restart. Will not boot to XP cd, USB, Hard drive, ultimate boot cd. Can’t figure out what the problem is. Replaced the hard drive with a 100gig. Have tested that drive in a external kit and works fine. Is it possible the hard drive connector is bad and trying to find a floopy? It does see the HDD. All tests pass in bios until it looks for the floppy. Thanks for any help you can give.

December 11th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Hi there, i don’t know if u can help to find the drivers, for my laptop. i been looking everywhere but i can’t find it, maybe if you a website where i can download or if someone else know please you can reach me at my email carlosjalba@gmail.com. Thank you.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:33 am
Why don´t you use the regular Toshiba support?
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp# Choose Downloads at the top of the site, choose you model, and all should be there.
Have fun
Zonga
December 12th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
yeah i actually have tried but i’m not so sure what is the specific model of my laptop, my laptop is the same as the one the is in the picture maybe do you know the specific model.??,,, but the way i have download some drivers but it doesn’t work.:S..
December 13th, 2008 at 3:56 am
Carlos, your exact model Number you will find under your notebook, next to the Toshiba sticker. If you look for Vista driver you will have a hard time finding the right one, because this notebook is over 4 Years old, and the driver are not really updated no more.
If you could be a bit more specific about the driver you look for?!
December 15th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Well the problem is that someone have took out the sticker with the model that is why i’m so sure about which one is the model…. and .. i need all the driver because my friend was trying to reinstall Windows but we can’t find the audio, video and a lot of more drivers… so actually my laptop is dead.. :S…
Thank you for your time.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:08 am
Well , even if you install just win XP , some standart driver will do well, so the P25 is not dead yet. The rest, just try the driver, beside that every driver win does not find has a Hardware ID, this ID you can search over Google , and you will see what Hardware you have inside and what driver you would need!
Its a bit of work, but at the end it worth !
Zonga
December 25th, 2008 at 8:51 am
Thank You Zonga
Yeah is what i been doing, and i found almost all the drivers so its working fine now.
Merry Christmas.

I zonga, I’m have a P25-S607 I was using it normally then I move to other place. And the screen just freeze, I restarted it but it looks like it’s going to start an then do not appear nothing, I did connected to a desktop monitor to check if the video card is working and pops-up a black screen with white letters asking if i want to start windows normally, when I hit enter do not appear nothing. Well the only thing it shows is green vertical lines moving up it looks very similar than matrix movie. What do you thing it is?
December 31st, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Hi Angel.. Since you see on a external screen still some Letters, and windows is asking you to start up in several modes, try at first the Save Mode to get back to a more or less stable windows. After that, try to check if the LCD is still giving any sign. If not, i believe that maybe the flat cable what connect from the Mainboard to the LCD is slipped out. It happen to mine also several times. You would have to dissemble the Blue part from the LCD to check that. But test at first with the external Monitor if you get windows back to life.
February 12th, 2009 at 2:02 am
I have a Toshiba Satellite P20 that wont load. When i press the power button down, the fans will start up and it will begin to load but 3-4 seconds later it will just stop, there is nothing on the screen that will give me any clues, even when hooked up to an external monitor. Any clues as to what it might be? any help would be much appreciated
thanks

Lost the Part that connects the Hard Drive to the Laptop.
Anyone know either a part number? or alternatively have this part spare that might be interested in selling it?
February 14th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
I had a p25-s676, it died extended warranty replaced it. I have still however the tv tuner card. It would slide into the same bay as the battery. Can anyone tell me if this was a usb connection, or something else? can I mod that tuner somehow to plug it up to another pc? it’s got a 4 wire cable going to the connector but there are some resistors and an IC chip on the connector board, any help would be great!
February 21st, 2009 at 12:49 pm
I recently took apart the keyboard at my P20 and cleaned it but now I got a problem. When i boot it i get the toshiba loading screen then it starts to beep and then a longer beeeeeeeep. I can use the setup (F12) and via that way go to XP and I’ve noticed that some keys dont work (s, page down, etc) other then that it works fine.
It seems that my connector on the motherboard is damaged (some black line on it). I can send you photos of it. If this is the case, can you disconnect the keyboard and use an external without getting the beeep?
Thanks so much for your help.
best regards
/Martin
March 25th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
after reading all the old replies, I guess my P20 has a overheated graphics chip. (it suddenly died with messed up screen, and reboot it will never get back into normal windows)
after an attempt to have it output to TV through the S-Video out, it’s keep giving me the black screen.
tried save mode, it worked once, and it seems fine. but now it won’t even go pass the bootlog (stops after AGP440.SYS)
is there anything I can do the help it? at least load into save mode and get back all the data. (if not, I guess getting a enclosure and save the data is easier?)
THANKS.
March 25th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
To get a enclosure would be for sure much faster , as to get the P20 back to life.
Since the GFX Card is done, it will be hard to replace just the broken part, but with some luck, you may find a working Mainboard for your notebook?!?!? Ebay is a good place for it. For what it worth, i still use my P20 , even knowing i have a much faster Notebook already, is the 17″ Screen pretty good to work with Exel and other things. Just remember that you have to get a exact same Mainboard, or a ide enclosure !
Good luck
March 31st, 2009 at 6:55 am
The problem I had with the “beeeep” on startup was due to a key being pressed down on the keyboard. Some keys had become ultra sensitive after my cleaning so i removed it and cut the plastic “blimp” under the key a bit.
Now it works like a charm except that the keys are still being ultra sensitive, almost like a touch screen.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Martin,
Apparently the keyboard is getting old and has to be replaced.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
canchi,
Yep, sounds like a problem with the graphics card. Is it integrated into the motherboard? If it’s dead, you’ll have to replace the motherboard.
I would suggest getting an external IDE enclosure. The data transfer will be way easier this way.
April 16th, 2009 at 4:25 am
NEED TO GET A NEW CONNECTOR (IDE) FOR THE DVD PLAYER IT WILL NO LONGER WORK AND ONLY WILL PLAY ONLY IF I HOLD IN THE ENTIRE DISC DRIVE AT BOOT UP,WHAT PART# IS IT AND WHERE CAN I GET IT?
April 17th, 2009 at 8:48 am
ENRIQUE,
Are you asking about the connector board between the optical drive and motherboard for a Satellite P20/P25 laptop? The board which connects the optical drive to the motherboard?
Here’s the part number: K000005900
Google the part number and you’ll find it.
May 11th, 2009 at 2:28 am
I have a bad motherboard (Toshiba P20E) and i need to replace it . how can i identify motherboard nr. And where I can find a good price where to buy…thanks
A lot of complements to you giving clear instructions, I found it very useful …many thanks
JK
May 11th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Jamal,
Usually Toshiba prints the part number on a sticker which could be found close to the memory slots. The part number looks something like that: K000014070.
Yours could be different. Find the part number and google it.

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite P25-S526 that is not working well. The screen is black and only shows characters like the old DOS computers used to. It doesn’t seem to get into the graphics mode. My guess is that the video board is damaged or that the BIOS program stored on the CMOS got scrambled because of a virus or due to physical damage. My first guess will be to remove the CMOS battery for a while so the BIOS reprograms itself. Where is the CMOS battery? (to what step number of your excellent guide do I have to go?). The other set of questions is: is the graphics board integrated into the motherboard? if so I guess that the motherboard needs to be replaced. Is it worth repairing it? (I have other computers)and where can I find a reliable not expensive source of such parts? Thanks for your attention to this and let me congratulate you for your excellent work with this series of guides. They truly are a lot of help.

My Toshiba PS25 series has recently started overheating and “locking up”. Of the three fans on the bottom only the outside two fans run for less than a minute then cycle on and off every few minutes. The center fan never runs. Is this normal operation or do I have a bad fan(s). Another PS25 I looked at seemed to have the fans run a two different speeds and ran constantly although the center fan on it never seemed to run either.(It saw some rough, dirty treatment in Iraq)
Thanks
August 25th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
David,
I believe it’s normal for this model. The center fan starts separately from two other fans.
Laptop overheats? Try cleaning the heat sink using compressed air. It’s easy. Remove the fan cover and spray compressed air into the fans until all dust is gone. Should help.
I’ve seen many units from Iraq. Most likely it needs a good cleaning.

Hi, I’m trying to replace the LCD monitor and your post is really helped me a lot. But I am wondering when I replace the monitor, Should I replace inverter together? I am very confusing.. Please let me know~~ Thank you/
September 12th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Sarah,
If you are replacing just the LCD screen, it is not necessary to replace the inverter board.
November 26th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Hi there – very useful article.
Does anyone know where I can get a HDD bay adaptor to add a second hard disk drive. I have seen them on-line but every time I try to buy one the websites say they are out of stock!?
Thanks – Dave

I have a bad power port, and am taking my Satellite P25-S676 apart. All is well so far, but I can’t figure out how the display cable disconnects from the motherboard. It doesn’t seem to be the same type connection as the keyboard cable connector. Can you explain how to get it to release?
Thanks!
Bye the way, awesome site!
November 28th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Garry Cook,
Yes, it’s a different type of connector. There should be a tag on the video cable connector.
Simply lift it up by the tag.

My notebook Toshiba satellite P20-771 gave me a problem with the ram of graphic Nvidia GeForce Go5700 (only 64MB instead of 128MB) and I think that a banc of ram is damaged (infact if I disinstall Graphics driver there is no problem instead if I use Nvidia Driver the computers doesn’t work and after few minutes stops himself). How can I change it?
Thanks and beg your pardon for my english.

I took the 2 silver screws off the hinge for the display
now I cannot get it open, even putting the screws back in
I can only open about 1 inch.
Any ideas how to get the display open?
Thanks

Hi
I have a P25-S607 which had a broken AC jack.. I took it to a repair place and after they fixed the jack, the laptop wont boot… when I press the start button, it comes on for a few seconds and you can hear the fans running, and then it just stops. The power button stays lit up but nothing comes up on the screen and none of the drive LED’s light up… I saw some other posts with this same problem when I read through… any idea what the problem could be? Motherboard? RAM? CPU?
Thanks
Dan
