Toshiba Satellite A10 and A15 notebook disassembly
These both notebook models, Satellite A10 and Satellite A15 are similar, so you can use the same disassembly guide for both models.
Overheating is a very common issue with these notebooks. It happens because dust get trapped between the cooling fan and the heatsink. Fortunately, it is very easy to access the cooling fan and clean it up. All you have to do is remove the fan cover as it shown on steps 2 and 3 and then remove and clean the heatsink, as it shown on steps 5 and 6. Alternatively, you can leave the heatsink connected to the laptop and remove the cooling fan instead. After the heatsink (or the cooling fan) is removed, thoroughly clean both parts with compressed air.
If you are removing the heatsink, make sure to apply some thermal grease on the CPU before you assemble everything back together. If you install the heatsink without thermal grease, the notebook will overheat.
In order to remove the CD/DVD drive, you’ll have to remove two screws. One screw is located on the bottom of the laptop, close to the DVD drive. The second screw is located under the keyboard, as it shown on the step 13. After both screws are removed, just push the drive from the case.
Here are compete notebook disassembly instructions.

I have Toshiba Satellite A10. I have got an error on Startup ‘IDE Error # 1′. My DVD ROM is not displayed in too. plz help me to remove this.
Thanks
August 26th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Faiz,
It is possible that you have a faulty DVD drive. You see “IDE Error #1″ because the BIOS cannot see the DVD drive.
Try reconnecting the drive, just remove it from the laptop and install it back in place. Overtime the connection between the drive and the motherboard can get oxidized and reconnecting the DVD drive might fix the problem.
If reconnecting the drive doesn’t help, then most likely you’ll have to replace it.

I was wondering if you had a photo of the inverter? I didn’t see that part being removed and I need to replace mine on an A15-S157
thank you.

Erica,
Take a look at this disassembly guide. It’s a different unit but the same idea. The inverter board is located right under the LCD screen. You’ll see the inverter when you remove the LCD screen mask.

Help.. can the entire display lcd assembly including plastic from a a15-s1292 be put on a A15-129? The plastic casing is identical..same size and everything but the screen of the A15-129 has a 15 inch diagonal as opposed to a 14.1 for the S1292. Will I need to move over the dislpay inverter as well?.. thanks for anyones help

Help,
If the video cable on both units looks the same, it might work.
You don’t have to move the inverter board.

I have an A15-S127 (Celeron 2.0) with broken/loose left side hinge. Computer still works fine and is 95% used as a desktop. Given the cost, labor involved in replacing the hinge I’m tempted to leave it alone, but…
1) If I decide to go ahead with the replacement, to which point in the disassembly guide do I need to go to remove the broken hinge?
2) If I have to dismantle the machine that far, would it be worth replacing the CPU with a 2.0 Pentium IV CPU? Found a site with that CPU for less than an exact Celeron replacement.

I have a A15-S129 and seems all of these a10 or a15 have same over heat problem , but mine not the fan or dust . Its still too hot with a new fan installed we even replaced the processor and thermal grease and it still shuts off sometimes even just sitting in the bios screen but will always come back on again and repeat . you can feel the heat itself . do you know anything about this problem ? is it a possible power supply problem?

I have two Toshiba Satellite Laptops. One of them had a Overheat Shutdown problem. After reading fixes for it on the Internet, I tried just by hunch, and used a good household VACUUM CLEANER. Just put the Vacuum Wand at the mouth of the exhaust for some 30 seconds and that’s it !!! The computer works great now and hasn’t shutoff yet.

My A15-S129 has the same problem at Suka’s but not quite that bad. I also ended up with one other issue. When I plugged it into to an inverter (converts DC current to AC) the computer over loaded the inverter. Then I used a DC charger (cigarette lighter charger) the DC plug in end started smoking/over heating.
I have since replaced/updated laptops however I would like to fix my old A15 and be able to pass it on to someone else. PLEASE HELP
Thanks to all in advance

i have a toshiba a15s127 the display is completely dark but i can see that the computer still works but its verry dim can any one help me out with this?
June 30th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Suka,
Most likely you have broken hinges and they have to be replaced.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Mark,
Most likely there is a problem with the screen inverter. The inverter board is located inside the display panel right under the screen. I would try replacing the inverter board first. If replacing the inverter board doesn’t help, your problem could be related to the backlight lamp (CCFL tube).
You’ll find more information here: Troubleshooting laptop with backlight failure

i have just bought my son a second hand A10 laptop, its a great looking laptop for little money, i have upgraded the memory, stuck in a 120g hadd as 30 is certainly not enough for my son. i have just purchased a dvd cdrw combo drive and i have scratched my head till i got no hair left on how to remove the dvd rom. this website here has just shown me how to do it, i knew of the screw underneath, and i was sure there was some more under the keyboard, but not 100%, but after looking at how to dimantle the A10, it just dropped into place. i would just like to thank the website for giving the infomation, as i am a competent desktop stripper/repairer, but this is my first laptop i have upgraded. MANY THANKS

Will a Satellite 1405-S171 lcd fit on a Satellite a15
(in other words can you put an intact Satellite 1405-S171 lcd directly onto an a15, are the hinges the same?)

How do I replace a broken hinge on a Toshibe Satellite A15-S129? Where do I get replacement hinge? Disassembly does not specifically show how to access hinge assembly under speaket cover. Please help.
September 16th, 2008 at 6:32 am
I have a broken left hinge on my Toshiba Satellite A15-S129. In order to remove the hinge, follow the instructions up to step 17. Then remove the 8 stickes covering the screws on the lcd part of the laptop. 3 blue oval shaped one’s on each side, and 2 black circle one’s below the monitor. Remove the 2 screws where the circle stickers where.
Now the hard part, removing the black plastic around the display. Proceed with caution: it’s fragile. I started with the top middle. Using my finger to lift up under the lcd, genltly pull up on the plastic, while pressing the latch with the other hand to get it out of the way. Now carefully wiggle and lift up on the rest of the black part.
Remove the 6 screws on the side of the display (3 on each side.) Lift up lcd display. Remove tape holding lcd connection and disconnect cable from back of lcd display. Remove screw holding in board underneath display. Disconnect cable
Remove 2 screws holding in speaker. Remove speaker grill, by bending the 4 parts of it on the bottom side of the laptop straight. It than can be pushed out from the bottom or pulled out from the top.
Good luck.
I haven’t replaced mine yet. I’m trying to repair hinge with Epoxy Clay Steel.

Hi Aremdvna, have you succeeded in fixing it with Epoxy Clay Steel? My left ringe is also broken and replacements I found on Internet are very expensive and there are none on my country (I live in Brazil).
Whould like to known if Epoxy is hard enough to glue this.

I recently spilled diffuser oil all over my Toshiba A15-S127, which completely etched in permanent streaks and stains all over my laptop, and fried the keyboard (amazingly, that was the only damage). Reading this guide (and another guide on painting) gave me complete confidence to disassemble my unit and paint my unit hot-rod-red–the case looks fabulous! Only thing now though, is that I don’t quite remember where all the screws go (oops)! One suggestion I might have for others attempting this is to print out the guide, and tape all the removed screws to each instruction as you go. Unfortunately, I thought of this AFTER I dismantled my unit. So…anyone know where I can find ANOTHER guide that tells me where all the [unmarked] screws go???
October 16th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Hello, Aremdvna–
One thing I couldn’t figure out while I was taking my A15 apart was how to remove the hinge from the top cover that holds the keyboard. I see that the hinges were in two parts, but I couldn’t figure out how they separate for removal. Is this a Houdini trick?

Hello,
When my laptop Satellite A10-521 is powered on, I got the following message :RTC battery is low or CMOS checksum is inconsistent. Press F1 key to set Date/Time.
According to messages read on web, it seems battery Bios need to be changed (battery CR2032) Could somebody help to locate this battery ? Should I disassembly the laptop entirely to access to that battery ? At which step of Laptop Disassembly Guides Instruction(on http://www.irisvista.com)can we see this battery ?
Looking forward to getting help from you
Regards
Yolande
March 2nd, 2009 at 10:49 am
YOLANDE,
Yep, could be a bad RTC battery.
Take a look at the step 24. The RTC battery is located on the left side from the power jack – the green thing hanging on red and black wires.
In order to access and replace the battery you’ll have to remove the top cover assembly as it shown in steps 1-18.

Hello,
I have a toshiba satellite laptop A10-S511 but he doesn’t start-up. I have dissasemble the motherboard (ref FHZSY1) and there is a blue self inductor component referenced as L1200 on the board (on the other side of CPU) whitch is burned. So the value on the self is not visible anymore to try to change it.
I would like to know a way to have the value of this component or if somebody have the same dissasembled motherboard to see the value write on it (xxRxx) and what is the risk to use a bad value.
April 4th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I had to replace the hinge on one side of the screen of a Toshiba A10. Only mishap was pulled antenna wire out of crimped connector at wireless board. Got new antenna. Antenna connectors must be pulled off straight up perpendicular to module board.
I’d suggest first step in disassembly should be to remove keyboard and DVD drive and one more screw under keyboard. Then proceed as in illustration.
New hinge and antenna installed, and computer works fine. Thanks for the help.

For those who have future problems with A10 cooling, I suggest the following steps. Permanently remove the CPU undercover and the ram undercover, and place a cooling mat underneath it. Make sure the mat has fans.
My A10 has busted hinges, and replacing the hinges doesn’t feel like a solution, because it just feels so EASY to break them again. I’ll probably try some kind of external hinge to hold it up.
In my case, not only there was lint clogging up the CPU fan, there was the problem that, I think the ball bearing (or whatever that keeps the fan lubricated) melted or stopped functioning at a point, what I did was remove the aluminum panel underneath the fan, and pull out the fan to access the magnets underneath, a drop of HIGH QUALITY lubricant into the little hole and replace the fan, and it works like a charm.
Btw, because without the CPU cover, lint clogs up VERY soon, so you will need to remove the CPU fan to give it a blast with the good ol air can, I DO NOT recommend removing the heat sink instead, to clean it out, it might be EASIER, but the little SCREWS that keep the heat sink onto the CPU, will get loose easily due to frequent removal, and loose heatsink gives you a worse headache than a loose fan.
PS: Do not use WD40 or standard machine oil, they leave substance when they dry out, and this method requires you to reoil the fan using the above method once a month or so. (A bottle of HQ oil is better than trying to find a replacement fan)
PPS: The above cooling method is not recommend if you have kids or require to keep the laptop in constant mobility.

Hi,
I have disassembled my laptop satellite a10-521 until step 24 and have located the rtc battery (the green thing hanging on red and black wires). On this green thing, I read P71035017110 on one side and 123 Ni-MH on the other side.
The next step is to change it according to message displayed when laptop powered on [RTC battery is low or CMOS checksum is inconsistent. Press F1 key to set Date/Time]
First of all I would like to know what kind of battery to buy, I do not succeed to get a reference number on web. Should I unstick carefully the green paper.
Thanks for help.

Dear Yolande
I can not answer to your question ( may be you can use a standard battery and solder it) but perhaps you could help me if your laptop is still disassembled.
I need the value written on the component L1200 of the mainboard to repare my A10.
The component (bleu self inductance) is placed near the top right corner int the picture of the board in step 20 (see my comment n°31)
Thanks for your help
May 11th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
yolande,
Here’s the part number for the CMOS (RTC) battery for Toshiba Satellite A10 and A15 laptops: P000377300
Google the part number and you’ll find it.
May 17th, 2009 at 7:52 am
Response to William about the blue self inductor,
the value written on the component L1200 is : R68J
Hope this helps

I have a A15-S1292, after taking it apart, i was about to reasemble it back together, all of a suddent I found a rectangular plate that I took off, and cant figure out where it is supposed to go, and help? Where the scre goes it says F8 and has two legs to mount on something, I cant figure it out.
May 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Brian,
Maybe it supports the keyboard in the middle? Take a look at the step 10.
August 10th, 2009 at 11:26 am
the screen keeps falling backwards and forwards…how do I adjust this? I have replace the hard drive, the fan but can’t seem to figure out how to get to the hinges.
thanks
August 12th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Dan,
Apparently both hinges are broken. It’s not easy to replace them. You’ll have to disassemble the whole laptop and remove the top cover with display assembly as it shown in the step 18. After that you’ll have to take apart the display assembly, unscrew hinges and replace them with new hinges. This repair is definitely not for beginners.

I have aquired a Toshiba A10, and installed a SMC mini wifi card, which works AOK, I’m just curious about the antenna switch on the front panel. I read somewhere that it is just an on/off toggel for the antenna? I’ve been looking for a wiring diagram, taking into account the above statement, does this mean the antenna leads, main/aux go from the card, to the switch then up to their transmitting position by the hinges?? Seem an odd way to kill transmitting ?? Currently the switch postion doesn’t have any bearing on the operation of my wifi card. Just curious about it’s fuction.
Cheers
JG

My AC adaptor/charger gets very hot when using my Satellite A15 plugged into the wall outlet. In fact, I’m on my 3rd AC adaptor. The others have smoked. The laptop battery will only last a few minutes if not on the charger. Is the battery causing this?
November 6th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Al,
Could be but I’m not sure 100%. Remove the battery and run the laptop just from AC. Will it get hot when the battery is removed?

Just in case I need it, where do I find the thermal paste (grease) needed for the CPU – when reinstalling the heat sink after cleaning and replacing the cooling fan.

Hi, I was wondering where the CMOS battery is located? There is a BIOS password set on the laptop, and I would like to reset it. I have a Satellite A15-S1692. I’ve looked at the disassembly tutorial, and I’m still unsure as to where the CMOS battery is located.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Toshiba A15-S127 that continues to overheat. I have replaced the hard drive, RAM, battery, fan and reapplied thermal grease to the heatsink. I completely disassembled it to be sure all of the houseing was clean and it is. I also tried a different processor and that didn’t help either. Do you have any suggestions on what to do from here? I thought of buying a new motherboard, do you think this could be the problem? Thanks in advance for your help.
February 24th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Jeremy,
Can you hear/see the cooling fan spinning when the laptop turned on? Can you see it spinning when the laptop gets hot?
Maybe the cooling fan is bad.

My Toshiba satellite A10 laptop has had a “floppy” display for months now. Either the screws are loose or the hinge is broken, from what I can infer.
A pictorial guide on how to assess the ailment and the cure for the ailment will be much appreciated.
Thanks and regards,
Amiostad.

Toshiba A15-S1292 laptop would not boot, but the fix was easy !
After working for hours in 90s heat, my 2004 laptop froze. I turned it off, and it would just not start. Only the front power buttons showed any activity. I visited various websites including this one and found out that it could be the CPU, the motherboard or the memory. Someone wrote to test the memory. I did that, taking out one module. The laptop came alive again! Then I put back the one module taken out, and it continued to work !

Hello,
Have you maybe some article where you described: “how to disassembly LCD display” (in this a10/a15 series laptop)?
I need to change/repair hinges.
Is it possible to install wifi card (g or n type) into mini PCI slot for this laptop? (If yes: Please give me some example of this wifi mini pci card)
