Removing hard drive from Satellite P10 or P15 laptop
This guide will show you how to access and remove the hard drive from a Toshiba Satellite P10 or P15 laptop. It is not difficult if you know where to look for the hard drive. LOL.
OK, here it is. The hard drive is located right under the CD/DVD drive. The optical drive is secured by one screw. Remove this screw (shown on the step 2) and carefully pull the CD/DVD drive from the laptop. The hard drive is located right under the metal plate.
When you replace/upgrade the hard drive, do not forget to transfer the shielding (foil) from the old hard drive to the new one.
Here’s my second tutorial for this model. This one will explain how to remove and clean the heatsink. Your laptop shuts down without any reason? The laptop runs hot and is much slower then before? Check the heatsink, most likely it’s clogged with dust causing laptop overheating.
Finally, my third tutorial for Satellite P10 and P15 series laptop. This tutorial explains how to take the whole thing apart and remove the motherboard.
I would recommend to read through all three tutorials if you decide to fix laptop yourself.

how do i remove the dvd drive? and what dvd drives are compatible with this laptop(p15-s420)?

John,
You should be able to use the following drives with your laptop:
DVD/CD-RW drives:
K000012220, K000012230, K000004190, K000005850, K000011300, K000011600.
DVD multi recorders:
K000005870, K000023180, K000013700, K000013710.
If you are buying a new drive, make sure it comes with the front plate because some front plates are not interchangeable.
You can find good deals on new and used DVD drives here.

How easy is it to replace the LCD screen on a P10?
Also, do I need to get exactly the right part number, or would, for example, a P30 screen fit equally well?
Thanks.

Walter,
Did you test the AC adapter?
I think the fuse is located somewhere close to the power jack.

jay,
Did you remove the heat sink from the laptop for cleaning? If you did, it’s possible you pulled the CPU from the socket. Make sure the CPU is seated correctly. Remove the heat sink again, unlock the socket, reseat the CPU and lock the socket. DO NOT FORGET to lock the socket or the laptop will not start. Does it help?

How do I reset the BIOS on a P10-504?
I’m getting the following error message when I switch on
For realtek rtl8139(x)/8130/810x PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-m0F: Exiting PXE Rom
From all the research I’ve done it seems the BIOS may be corrupted so I need to reset it.
Is there anyway to do this apart from completely dissembling it and removing the BIOS battery?
By the way I’ve already replaced the hard disk with a brand new one.
Thanks very much in advance
Regards

I can’t seem to get past step 7 on the screen for the P10/15 motherboard removal. I thought maybe making a donation was the key, which I did, but I’m still stuck at #7.
January 4th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Robert Marquardt,
Thank you for the donation. It wasn’t the key but thanks anyway.
I guess you are talking about this guide: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-p15/removing-motherboard-1.htm
There are THREE pages. Look for Page 1 :: Page 2 :: Page 3 links on the top and bottom and you’ll get to the next step.
I guess you are stuck on the first page because you missed links to next pages.
Good luck!
