Toshiba Satellite M55. Open display assembly and remove LCD screen.
Toshiba Satellite M55 laptop is a pretty new model with 14.1-inch TruBrite widescreen display. The guide will show you how to open laptop display assembly if you want to remove and replace the screen. Even though I didn’t picture the battery removal step in my guide, you should always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery. The LCD screen mask is shaped a little bit different then on older laptops and it might take more time to remove it from the display assembly. I usually start LCD mask removal around the hinge area. Place fingers between the mask and the screen and wiggle it a little bit until you feel that latches are released. It is hard to explain how much you have to flex the mask not to crack it, just be very careful and do not hurry. After the latches on the bottom of the mask are released, you can start separating the mask from the display assembly on the sides and finally on the top. The FL inverter board in this model is located under the laptop speakers. To get access to the Fl inverter board cables you have to unscrew the speakers and put them a little bit aside. The best way to find a spare LCD screen is to use a Toshiba part number on the back of the screen. The part number can be located on a sticker and it look like this: K0000270850

Where can I buy the Flex to this Display?

Alex,
Yes, you have to use a 14″ screen because any other size will not fit into the case, but there are many different screens compatible with your laptop.
Just search eBay for “Satellite M55 screen” and find one. There are a few screens listed for your Satellite M55-S331.

Hi,
A while ago I cracked the screen on my M55-S331. I was wondering if I have to put the same exact replacement 14″ screen or can I use one off a different model? And how will I identify witch is the screen I need?

Hi,
I have a Toshiba M55-s139 running 7, one night everything was perfect. I turned off the unit and the next morning while booting I saw the Toshiba boot screen with a yellowish blueish color at the bottom of the screen as the boot proceeded it went to the windows boot screen with the same colors at the bottom of the screen then went black.
Thought I would try the reset routine with the battery out and power unplugged, I held the the power button for about a minute then with out the battery and just the power plugged in powered up the unit with the same results.
My question is:
Should I replace the CCFL tube or the inverter? if you think they are the problem in the first place.
Thanks for your reply
Bob

Hi i have a toshiba M55 and window keep reboot by itself every few seconds i have lots of music and photos and i will not like to loose anything how can i fix this

PeggyLo,
Most likely it’s either bad inverter or failed backlight lamp.
1. Try replacing the inverter board.
2. If new inverter doesn’t help, replace the LCD screen.

On my M55-S3292 the screen has gone very dim, in fact mostly black, unless you look very closely. I have pressed Fn+F3 & F4, and I can barely see the “sun” icon in the center of the screen when it is pressed, but it does not brighten up. I have tested the VGA port and it works. Do you have any idea what the issue might be?

Microbiosoft,
I doubt that your problem is related to the inverter board. The screen lights up so the inverter board works properly.
Most likely it’s one of the following:
1. Bad connection between the video cable and LCD or motherboard.
2. Damaged video cable.
3. Damaged LCD screen.
I cannot tell which one is causing the problem without testing the laptop.

kenneth geesey,
Sounds like both display hinges are broken. You’ll have to disassemble the display panel and replace both broken hinges.

Luke,
I think for 470euros you can buy a brand new laptop.
If you have nothing to lose, you can try replacing the LCD screen yourself. You can buy a brand new LCD screen on eBay for 110-120USD and replace it yourself.

Hi,
I have a satellite L20 101. It has the same diagnosis as most of the users. A vertical line appears on the right of the LCD. I have yet to try it out with an external monitor but I would like to know if it’s worth purchasing the screen online? My local Toshiba distributors charged 470euros for a replacement screen!
Thanks,
Luke

jhkyhm,
It depends on the type of problem you are experiencing.

Jim,
Could be bad video cable.
Did you test the laptop with an external screen? Does it work all the time without any problem?
April 14th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Yogesh,
First of all, you’ll have to test the laptop with an external monitor. Will it work?
If the external video output doesn’t work either, there is something else going on with the laptop. Make sure the memory is seated correctly.

Hi There,
Thanks for the wonderful website. I have donated my bit to for your effort as it really helped me with the issues.
I have one last question. I have Toshiba M55-S3314. Last nite I took apart the bottom part of the laptop.(Not the screen).
Now, the screen is not turning on. It is total black. I have checked the video cable on back of the screen. It is hooked up proper. I can’t figure out any other reason why it is not turning on. The connection on the motherboard is proper.
Earlier, I had the problem with screen not showing up(only white light in the background). But now It is total black( No back light or anything).
Any help will be appreciated.

I’m repairing an M55 for a friend. The video is intermittent but mostly absent. It’s a black screen with the back light on. When I unplug and plug the monitor (see picture) you can see the video momentarily. I checked all the connections and they are tight. Any ideas as to what could be the issue?

Hello.
I have a Toshiba M55. When I boot it up there are verticle lines running the length of the screen beside right. It does this on occasion but in the past it has corrected itself. I thought it might be the video card that was loose because it usually occurs after the computer is bumped or I carry it around for a while. I am at a loss as to what the problem is so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
My M55 comes up immediately with a grey/white screen sometimes and other times it is normal when I turn it on. I wiggle tweak and twist and it does not affect the grey screen. Hooking up an external monitor works fine.
I have heard get a new LCD panel or it might be the inverter. I presume that the video HW is integrated into the motherboard.
Is there a diagnostic to narrow it down? Can I probe the inverter board with a DMM and see if it is not powering up?
Thanks.

once you remove your laptop screen you have to press in the circuit board strip gently to see if that improves the clarity of the screen. it worked for me. the red lines went away.

If I get lines on my LCD to the point of not seeing anything but lines, and if I squeeze the top bezel and it clears, is there something loose or is it a bad screen
January 14th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Have a Toshiba M55 with a screen that gets lines all across it. If you hold the bezel tight up at the top lines go away as if something is loose. Do you think that is the case, or is the screen bad?

my problem is the same as 19′s. I didnt see an answer. i did all the screen disassemble parts , the ribbon is fine on the top, moving tha doesnt change it, but the screen clears immediately if you let the back hang down applying pressure to the bottom part of the ribbon cable, as soon as you raise it the screen goes screwy again. how do i reassemble maintaining pressure to keep screen clear?

Julian,
It looks like you have a problem with the LCD screen. I don’t think that you can fix this problem at home. You’ll have to replace the screen.

jay,
What kind of line do you see? Are they running through the whole screen?
Test your laptop with an external screen. Can you see the same lines on the external video?
