Toshiba Satellite M55 laptop is a pretty new model with 14.1-inch TruBrite widescreen display. The guide will show you how to open laptop display assembly if you want to remove and replace the screen. Even though I didn’t picture the battery removal step in my guide, you should always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery. The LCD screen mask is shaped a little bit different then on older laptops and it might take more time to remove it from the display assembly. I usually start LCD mask removal around the hinge area. Place fingers between the mask and the screen and wiggle it a little bit until you feel that latches are released. It is hard to explain how much you have to flex the mask not to crack it, just be very careful and do not hurry. After the latches on the bottom of the mask are released, you can start separating the mask from the display assembly on the sides and finally on the top. The FL inverter board in this model is located under the laptop speakers. To get access to the Fl inverter board cables you have to unscrew the speakers and put them a little bit aside. The best way to find a spare LCD screen is to use a Toshiba part number on the back of the screen. The part number can be located on a sticker and it look like this: K0000270850

Your site is great! I have a problem with my wireless card. I just started getting the message that I should activate my wireless card. The switch is on the on position, but it is not working. Any assitance would be appreciated. Thanks!

When you turn on the wireless card switch, does the LED light on?
You can try to reseat the wireless card; you can easily access it if you remove a hatch from the boom of your laptop. Check out step 3 on the Satellite M55 disassembly guide. The wireless card is located between the modem and the hard drive.
To reseat the wireless card, spread the latches and it will pop up at 30 degrees angle. Carefully remove it from the slot and put it back all the way down. Press on the card until the latches are locked. It also could be a software issue and there is no way that I can fix it over the internet.
If your laptop is still under warranty, I would take it to a repair center.

Hi, I’m trying to take apart the heat sink of my toshiba m55-s3293 to solve the sudden shutdown problem. however, even after removing all the screws on top of the laptop, i dont seem to be able to lift off the case on the back! can someone help or point me to some place where there is some help available. i have searched on the web, but could only find help for the toshiba a35, not the m55. thanks in advance.

Hi, I bought a Toshiba Satellite M55 about 4 months ago. Two months ago I started getting blue error screens, and every time it would say it was my video driver. I sent it back to the manufacturer twice, they have replaced my hard drive and my motherboard. It worked fine for about a month, and then, of course, about two weeks after my warranty is up I started receiving the blue error screens again. I followed your excellent directions and fixed a problem I was having with my monitor but when I was back behind the screen fiddling around I noticed a sticker that said that the display contains trace amounts of mercury. Is this anything to worry about? Thanks!

I have a M55-S135 I want to change the internal hard disk. It is damaged. Actually I know it is 80 GB but I but a 100 GB. How can I change it, and is ok to put the 100 GB disk?

toshiba’s are real picky about the substitute brand put in them, typically we only install toshiba or ibm branded hard drive at our repair depot, even toshiba they don’t like sometimes on the m45s. It’s ok to upgrade the drive, it’s one of the square panels at the bottom that only has 2 screws, pull out the hard drive and put the caddy that’s on it on the new drive. Make sure the new drive doesn’t have any jumpers on it (its a little rubber thingie some companies put on the pins)

I wanted to know if you can tell me how to replace BOTH sticks of RAM on a Toshiba Satellite M55-S3294 In the user manual it says one stick of RAM is accessible but the other is not, do you have any info on this? Can’t boot my laptop M55-S3293 which is now out of warranty. Can boot with CD but it doesn’t see the HD. HD once removed and connected to an external portadrive reads fine on another computer. Connecting pins on the HD side look fine. Any help most appreciated. Thanks.

Trying to fix my daughters M55. The screen gets lines going through it and seems to have problems with the virtical hold. If i twist the screen slightly it stops and then is fine…for awhile. Any ideas - ribbon cable?

I have a Toshiba M55 S3293. It has started to freeze at startup. It shows the following resource conflicts:
PCI on Motherboard - Bus:06 Device :04 Function:00
PCI Serial Bus Controller on Motherboard Bus:06 Device :04 Function:02
Mass Storage on Motherboard PCI - Bus:06 Device :04 Function:03
PCI on Motherboard - Bus:06 Device :04 Function:04
It gives the options to resume or enter set up, but it will not do either. Does this require replacing the motherboard?

Hey, I have got a satellite m55-s3293 laptop….it just stopped working. when connected to power supply, the farthest led (blue) glows and nothing else happens.the warranty period expired about 6 months ago and im thinking it might be the motherboard……can anyone help with this?????

I don’t know whats wrong with my screen. I turned it on this morning it booted up. When everything was done loading, the screen froze. The colors started to fade and i was left with vertical stripes. All different colors but in no particular color order if that makes sense. Any ideas? And, if possible, is there a way to detach the screen from the laptop, and plug a VGA cable into the laptop, and have it hooked up to an external moniter and have it still run?

You’ll have to test your laptop with an external monitor. Connect the external monitor to the VGA port on the side or your laptop and turn the laptop on. It should detect the external screen by itself. If it doesn’t detect the external screen, you can switch the video with Fn+F5 key combination. Press and hold down Fn and at the same time press F5.
If video on the external screen appears to be good but the laptop LCD fades out and displays only vertical stripes, most likely you have a faulty LCD screen.

I have an M55, and I just bought an external monitor that has a native resolution of 1920 by 1200. I can’t my laptop to allow the external monitor to be the primary. I know the video card can handle the monitor, but every time I set it as primary and apply, it just resets itself so the laptop monitor is primary. Any thoughts as to how I can fix this?

I have a Satellite M60 and it shuts down after a few seconds. I have removed the battery and put it back but it will not help. All leds but the harddrive works. When I press the start-button the fan starts for a few seconds, nothing appears on the screen. I have switched places on the memory-modules, tried with one at a time in both places. What to do?

The laptop start without any video on the screen?
Try this. Remove as many parts as you can (battery, DVD drive, wireless card, hard drive, etc…) Try swapping the memory modules again, install them one by one into each memory slot.
If you still experience the same problem, I would assume that you have a problem with the motherboard. It’s unlikely that both memory modules failed at the same time.

I’m stationed in China for a couple years doing work, and my Toshiba M55 has started to make this HORRIBLE whirring sound in the bottom left corner of the keyboard area. It is obviously a fan problem, and I would just go in there and fix it, but unfortunately for some reason I CAN’T OPEN www.irisvista.com Are you for some reason blockin Chinese IPs? I really would love to get the disassembly guide for the M55-S325. Any other place to download it?

hi,
the model i am having is A80. 2 days ago, i accidentally kick on my laptop as i left it sumwhere beneath the table. just a minor impact. however when i turn on, the graphic seems with some minor lines on it. it onli appears when the graphic application is being used, such 3D games, its working perfectly in windows and normal activity. Do u think tat the ATI X300 is damaged by the impact or the connection or anything is losen?

What kind of line do you see? Are they running through the whole screen?
Test your laptop with an external screen. Can you see the same lines on the external video?

It looks like you have a problem with the LCD screen. I don’t think that you can fix this problem at home. You’ll have to replace the screen.

my problem is the same as 19’s. I didnt see an answer. i did all the screen disassemble parts , the ribbon is fine on the top, moving tha doesnt change it, but the screen clears immediately if you let the back hang down applying pressure to the bottom part of the ribbon cable, as soon as you raise it the screen goes screwy again. how do i reassemble maintaining pressure to keep screen clear?

Have a Toshiba M55 with a screen that gets lines all across it. If you hold the bezel tight up at the top lines go away as if something is loose. Do you think that is the case, or is the screen bad?

once you remove your laptop screen you have to press in the circuit board strip gently to see if that improves the clarity of the screen. it worked for me. the red lines went away.

Hi,
My M55 comes up immediately with a grey/white screen sometimes and other times it is normal when I turn it on. I wiggle tweak and twist and it does not affect the grey screen. Hooking up an external monitor works fine.
I have heard get a new LCD panel or it might be the inverter. I presume that the video HW is integrated into the motherboard.
Is there a diagnostic to narrow it down? Can I probe the inverter board with a DMM and see if it is not powering up?

I also have LCD problem.
So, I want to try to change new backlight first and then new inverter.
What do you think?
I check the weeb site, Inverter is tha same as M55 model.
But I don’t know backlight M50 model has the same as M55.

I’m repairing an M55 for a friend. The video is intermittent but mostly absent. It’s a black screen with the back light on. When I unplug and plug the monitor (see picture) you can see the video momentarily. I checked all the connections and they are tight. Any ideas as to what could be the issue?
