Toshiba Satellite A55. How to remove and replace laptop keyboard yourself.
Removing and replacing the keyboard on Toshiba Satellite A55 laptop wouldn’t be any different then replacing the keyboard on any other Toshiba laptop. Before you open the laptop case, remove the battery. The keyboard securing strip doesn’t have any securing screws and shouldn’t cause any problem when you remove it. The keyboard cable connector on the system board is cover by a metal plate and the plate has to be removed before you can get an access to the connector. Before you pull the keyboard cable from the connector you have to unlock it. To open the connector, move the connector lock toward the LCD screen. It is enough to move it 2-3mm to open the connector. Be careful with the keyboard connector on the system board. If you damage it, the entire system board has to be replaced.
By the way, if you want to remove the motherboard, you should take a look at the Toshiba Tecra A2 disassembly guide. Both laptops are very similar.

Hey Marsha,
Are you having a trouble with the disassembly guide? What’s going on?

Hi, I’m trying to figure out if I can buy a better processor for my Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 and replace it myself, Is that possible?
August 21st, 2006 at 11:41 pm
Nicolas,
I believe you have Celeron-M 380 (1.6GHz) processor installed and that’s the only CPU listed for this model. I don’t know if you can upgrade it to Pentium. On most laptops CPU is not upgradeable. Instead of trying to upgrade the CPU I would rather spent money on more memory and faster hard drive.

Hi dont suppose you know if you have to remove the keyboard to remove the dvd drive?
My optical drive has broken and Im having problems in removing it to insert a replacement
Many Thanks

OllieLeap,
Yes, you’ll have to remove the keyboard is you want to replace the DVD drive. You’ll have to remove two screws under the keyboard. The one is already circled on the step 5, that’s the right one. The second screw is located close to the top left corner of the drive. After you remove one screw on the bottom of the laptop and two screws under the keyboard, you can slide out the drive.

I have a toshiba satellite A55 and accidentally spilled coffee on my keyboard, removing the keyboard is no problem, but the real problem is some keys seems doesnt work right now, any idea how to fix it?
October 20th, 2006 at 9:58 pm
Hars,
You’ll have to replace the keyboard. Here’s a part number for Toshiba Satellite A55 keyboard: P000402620. Search on the Internet by the part number and you’ll find.

I am looking for instructions to replace the keyboard on my Toshiba Satellite P35S11 laptop. Is it going to be exactly the same as shown in the dismantling instructions for the P30?

I have a Toshiba A55-S326. One of the keys (“K”) popped off as well as the rubber “suction cup” which I presume was under it.
Is there a way to replace this key on the heyboard? Should there be another part that I need to look for, such as a retainer, etc?
I would appreciate any advice as to how to proceed, even your recommendation to simply replace the keyboard.

Hi the power receptacle for my A55 is just about dead. I have to wiggle the cord for ages to find a connection and then let it charge without touching the machine or the cord. I assume I need to replace it… where can I find these parts? thanks c

A bottle of fingernail polish remover was spilled on my keyboard of my Toshiba A55 laptop. It still kinda works but when I sign in and try to type my username the letters “eeeeeeeeeeee” comes up. I cannot delete it and the puter makes a funny noise. Is there any way to fix this problem or is it totally ruined. It is only 10 months old and I am sick over this. Thank you for your help.

i spilled alittle bit of coke into my keyboard, so my m and o keys are alittle *sticky*, i folllowed the steps to take off the strip but im a little scared of breaking it because i actually own a toshiba satelite A105 which was the closest thing to a toshiba a55 at least on how to take off the keyboard. I don’t know if i will be able to take it off because of the slight difference on how the strip was set up. i have some pictures, but i dont know if i can take the strip off exactly or almost exactly how the example was shown for the a55 laptop

Hi there, I spilled some water on the keyboard of my A55. I order the replacement keyboard and it is being shipped (should be here in the next day or so). When I spoke briefly to the gentleman over the phone who was assisting me with the order, he said that it was a delicate process and should probably have a professional do it. He said that it is easy to damage the motherboard. My question is this: how easy is it to damage the motherboard? and could you provide some more detailed directions so that I do not do this? Anything would be appreciated. Thanks
March 4th, 2007 at 8:59 am
I damaged two keys on my satellite M55, and it looks like I’ll have to replace the entire keyboard. I’ve got one on order, but am wondering if these instructions for the A55 are similar to what I would have to do on the M55. I’ve found instructions for disassembling the M55 to remove the motherboard, and removing the keyboard is one of the early steps, but it sure seems like I have to remove an awful lot of screws from the bottom, and I’m hoping I don’t really have to do that for this operation.
Anyway, I’ll find out for sure next weekend, when the keyboard arrives. Thanks for the great website and instructions.
PS, I’ll be trying out a keyboard protector, too, as the reason I’m in this pickle is because of trying to clean out the crumbs underneath the keys! D’oh!
March 18th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
I don’t know if it’s too late for the last question, but you don’t have to remove any screws on the bottom to replace the keyboard. Simply detach the keyboard strip as described, there are only 2 screws underneath that holding the keyboard down.

I have a strange problem with a Toshiba A55. During BIOS, it seems the keyboard works fine. AS soon as windows begins to load the keyboard does not work, with the exception of a few keys that then type the wrong letter. Now, here is the wrench in the works. I swapped out hard drives with a known good drive to make sure it wasn’t a spoftware / virus issue. The exact same thing happenes. Anyone have an idea as to what / where the problem is??
Thanks, Bill.
May 7th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
Bill,
That’s a really strange problem. Just in case try upgrading/reflashing the BIOS, it might help.
May 8th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
I’ve seen that problem on that model before at work… unfortunately it was determined to be a system board issue… hopefully that’s not your problem…
(the problem being the laptop system board has to heat up in order for the error to be created, and it can’t heat up enough in bios or bootable cds)

I just loaded windows 98 on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 410CDT/810. and changed the keyboard. When I power up I have no pointer control from the accupoint on the keyboard. When I hook up an external mouse I still do not have any control over the pointer.
Any help would be apprciated.
Thanks

Hi this is the first time writing to anyone else about a problem my wifes friend owns a toshiba a55 and while drunk she was typing and had to go to sleep eventually but she had set it on a counter top with about an inch of water and she left it plugged in she asked me to please save her hard drive if the laptop is dead time for a new one anyway right , well i took it all apart to my amazment almost every solder was corroded and it seems as something had eaten through most of the soldering , is this possible overnight i couldnt believe it since we live in Hawaii i took everything all apart and let it sit in our wonderfull sunshine instead of blow drying it and it worked out just fine all dried up but i noticed it has a moldy smell to it and everything is kinda greasy but the dvd drive doesnt even look as it got even wet and the hard drive looks good , but my main question would be can i plug her laptop drive into my pc and get the data i need off it, she’s a book writer.
I dont claim to be a proffesional but i know my way around computers and laptops pretty damn good i just never had encountered anything of this type….please advise me if that would work with the hard drive and im sure her board is pretty fried also since no power lights go on or anything anyway thanks for your time.
R Clark from Hawaii
June 11th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Well R.Clark let’s put it this way, step into a tub with water and take along a toaster plugged in, then drop the toaster in the water and see what you look like in the mourning ? Anyway aside from that the laptop Hd is 9mm,IDE but in a ATA-6 format, meaning you have to get an adapter to put it in a regular PC or encase it in a laptop IDE Usb external enclosure. Now here’s the problem, if it’s got a SMBIOS management on the Hd and she put a password on it then you better believe in magic cause there is no way to get around it except back in the same laptop even toshiba techs can’t break it.The newer stuff might but it cost.If not then try one of the two adapters and if there’s life on the Hd you should be in.

We are now on Bellsouth 6.0 wireless DSL and Im still unable to conect any quicker than standard dialup! UGH!
First we thought it was their service (tried wild blue for a couple of weeks with same results) Now we are with Bellsouth DSL and Im SO FRUSTRATED…. do I need a processor upgrade, memory upgrade, WHAT???
Any suggestions? Im even afraid to take it in and have a repairshop look at it because I cant afford for them to do nothing an d charge me anyways……possibly there are just some settig I could tweek but I doubt I have such luck….Im thinking an upgrade is in order.
ANY suggestions????

I have a Toshiba A55 Satellite type. My recovery/drivers dvd doesn’t seem to work. When I try to restart the whole computer system, it downloads up to a point (always the same percentage at 42%).
I am interested for a free dowload on A55 series, Toshiba, so that I recover my notebook.
thank you to all

Hmm I guess I’ll be the stupid one in the crowd. I have no idea how to remove the keyboard stripping, even after looking at photos. I’m dealing with a Satellite M45.
I’m trying to remove in attempts to repair or replace (spilled on it)
Anyone who may be able simplify the removal process even more.. your help is appreciated.

I have a A55 toshiba satellite that has the overheating probem. What happens is that the keyboard gets stuck at certain keys as jewelzdag says in post #21..
I would like to find out if anyone has found a solution or a work-around to this?
I brought this laptop to the local tech and all they told me was that there is a keyboard problem. (when in fact, there’s none) I noticed under windows, the thing does over heat a lot.

for those who want to upgrade their processors, look up the pentium m’s in the intel website. I was able to sucessfully change the processor of my A55 to a Pentium M 705 (1.5ghz, 1mb l2 cache)

illuniel,
My laptop was overheating also. Would turn itself off. I solved the problem with the purchase of a 4-inch $6 fan from Walmart. It sits by my laptop and keeps it cool as a cucumber.

Toshiba Satellite A30, 5 years old. For no reason the Keyboard has stopped responding, nothing, tried all the normal combinations to unlock but to no avail. Control panel says it’s operating OK, replaced the drivers, not working. Plugged in external USB keyboard which PC recoqnised, again no response. There was a Grokster virus but removed that.
I’m now thinking of taking the keyboard out and replacing it – any more ideas before I do ??

lmassey,
Wasn’t it easier to clean the cooling module inside the laptop. Simply buy a can of compressed air and spray it inside the air intake on the bottom.

Becky,
Didn’t you find instructions for a Satellite M55. For the keyboard replacement follow steps 6-9.

Make sure there is no foreign object under the key.
In most cases you cannot fix that. You’ll have to replace the keyboard.
