Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 disassembly guide will help you completely take apart the notebook to remove and replace the system board, the power board and the video board. Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 notebook has some known problems very similar to Toshiba Tecra TE2100. Overtime the video card pops up from the connector on the system board causing unpredictable video problems. If you experience a video problem try to press on the video board so it makes a better connection with the system board. Also you can experience a problem with starting the laptop. When you press on the power button the laptop will not start and the power LED flashes orange. Most of the time it happens because of a poor connection between the power board and the system board. In some cased you can fix the problem by reseating the power board. If reseating the board doesn’t help then the system board and the power board has to be replaced. One more problem - you can get the CMOS (RTC) battery error each time you turn on the laptop. If replacing the battery doesn’t fix the problem then it might be also caused a bad connection between the power board and the system board. Try to reseat the power board.

Five of the keys on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 series have popped off. I have all the parts and I need instructions on how to put them back on.
I have managed to put all the little parts together, now I can’t figure out how to install them so I can put the keytop back on.
Thanks
July 10th, 2006 at 11:09 am
Hey El,
I’m not sure if you would be able to find these instructions. All keyboards are different. Even though you have all key parts, sometimes it’s hard to figure out how to put them back but it’s possible. So, here’s what I usually do when one key pops off. I carefully remove another key, so I can see how it’s connected to the base. Be careful, remove just the key (the part with letter on it) so legs stay in place and you can see how it’s assembled. Now find necessary parts for each key and put them back in place.
It’s worth trying. Even if you remove one more key and cannot put it back, I don’t think it’ll make a big difference for you.

my toshiba satellite pro always hang with no apparent reason. giving me RTC bad battery and F1 check sum error whenever reoot. I have reformatted the disk but still having the same problem. then I thought its the batter problem. so I took out the battery and using the direct current.. but problem still exists. what are parts should i look into? thanks
August 14th, 2006 at 7:42 pm
Zac,
This problem can occur because of a bad connection between the power board and the motherboard. Sometimes it’s possible to fix the problem if you reseat the power board (CRT battery is connected to this board). Disconnect the power board from the motherboard and connect it back. If it doesn’t help, then most likely the connector itself is bad but I cannot say on witch side. It might be a faulty connector on the power board or a faulty connector on the motherboard. If we repair Satellite 6100 with this problem under warranty, we usually replace both boards. I hope it helps.

I have a toshiba 6100 where the HD runs very hot. I have recently replace the original HD, which has helped a little but it still reaches 60 degrees Celcius under prolonged load. I would like to try cleaning the fans etc as the laptop is quite old.
How much do I need to take apart to do this? Just the keyboard, or do I need to take the whole top off?
Do you have any tips for servicing to help the air flow inside the laptop?
September 30th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
Lindsay,
I think it would be enough just removing the keyboard. As you see on the step 10, you get some access to the cooling fan and you can clean it with compressed air.

I am hvaing trouble with my soundcard on my satellite pro 6100. There is no sound coming from it and it does not show up on device to sayn that there is any hardware. However this is not consistant as the sound comes and goes. Originally I thought it was to do with the XP service pack 2 but having removed the SP it has not resolved the issue. Does anyone thin it could be the hardware and if so what is the easiest way to get to it. i don’t want to take the laptop apart anymore than I need to.
THANKS

I just called on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 laptop, to the Toshiba Customer Service Center 800-457-7777. They told me that my Toshiba laptop has a warrantee that has been extended for an additional year, because of some issues that the line of laptops has had. They are sending me a box for UPS shipment to their repair depot, and intend to resolve the issues for me. Besides the RTC battery error you are getting, I have had trouble getting the PC to boot and power down properly. It sometimes hangs at the Toshiba logo screen, or takes a really long time to power off.

Hi there, How far do I need to go to replace the TFT panel?
I have two SP6100’s here, one with a duff base unit and one with a duff monitor.
Im planning on swapping the lcd panels to produce a working laptop.
Do I need to fully strip it, and then some?
Keep up the good work.

Hi,
I have a Satellite Toshiba Pro 6100, when i plug the AC adapter it show yellow led on but whenever i try press to power on then the led light will turn orange (blinking). Any idea whats happen? For your info, the battery no longer working and has been taken out.

I had the message “Bad RTC and Check sum error” for at least one year on my SP6100. Two weeks ago I got the famous orange blinking led. After reheating the connection to the powerboard my SP6100 is up and running again
Do you think that replacing the battery will solve the “Bad RTC and Check sum error”?
January 1st, 2007 at 11:46 am
Tomson,
There is no simple answer to this question. If the RTC battery is actually BAD then yes, replacing the battery will fix the problem. If you are getting this message because some connection issues between the power board/motherboard, then probably not. I hope it helps.

Can anyone explain in great detail the different types of cable connectors and how to remove them. The flat ribbon ones are self-evident and been explained here, but I have an assortment of tiny white and black jacks that do not want to come out and because there are so small damage is possible. There is a right way, but it isn’t explaiend and I do not seem to find the answer anywhere.
Maybe these things have a little catch or tab that I need to push/pull and cannot see.
Please help - this would be a great addition to this page.
Thanks

Hello,
I have Satellite Pro 6100 and want to replace just the LCD because it’s bad, is there simpler directions how to do this, or do I have to take apart the whole laptop?

Thank you Cynthia.
I have a Satellite Pro 6100 that worked perfectly until about three months ago, and things just started going wrong with it. Quickly (over the course of two months or so) it deteriorated more and more, until finally just before Christmas I got the infamous Blinking Orange Power LED. Based on your comment, I called Toshiba and they extended my warranty until 6/30/07. My original warranty ended October of 2004, so I had planned on turning it into a paperweight. Your post prompted me to Call Toshiba (something I wasn’t considering beforehand), and ended up with a warranty extension and my laptop fixed for free.

Hi
I have a Satellite Toshiba Pro 6100, and recently water spilled on it. I quickly dried off what I could and disasmbled it drying out all the pices, though the motherboard it self was WET. I plugged in the power cable a week later and orange light blinked booted up and had the “Bad RTC and Check sum error” and sound as it failed and shutoff.
When I dissambled the laptop and resembled it a few days later I poped in the AC jack and the laptop wouldnt boot up, sounding like there was no POWER being sent to laptop, I checked all the connections, and even the one on the motherboard near the heatsync, re placed them all were fit in their sockets and yet no cigar.
So my question is what should I do now? Is this a power port issue or the issue on the mother board? Thanks.

Adis:
If you just need to replace the TFT screen (and use the old VGA ribbon cable), you just have to open the TFT bezel. There is a total of 8 hidden screws that you have to open first to gain access to the inside. 3 screws are on each side of the screen (the top one is covered with a plastic filling, the middle and bottom one with a adhesive sticker. You need to loosen them on both sides (left and right of the screen bezel)
Now you need to uncover the round adhesive in the front of the bezel (left and right of the Toshiba logo) and loosen the two screws.
Once you have done this, you are very close to gain access to the inside.
Squeeze a thin object (i.e. Telephone- or a credit card) between the plastic on the right side of the screen and open the cover slowly with some force. Remember to push thetiny grey switch aside when you proceed to the top of the screen.
The lower part of the screen plastics will pop out easier if you have the display as open as it gets.
Now you have full access to the inside, just pull the ribbon on the back of your TFT display downwards and unplug the jack from the FL inverter located on the bottom side.
You will see, it’s harder to describe the procedure with words, than actualy seeing it on a picture.
Just be aware, if you replace a TFT with a resolution of lets say 1024×768 with a 1600×1200 (yes, it’s possible), then you will need to replace the ribbon cable too. They are NOT compatible. In this case, you need to unscrew the whole Laptop.

I am in a bind. The brown cable with connector on it. From the pictures it shows this cables routing down to bluetooth compartment on back. Does it need connected somewere? I cannot find a post to connect it to. And I have no wireless signal
Thanks for your time
January 16th, 2007 at 5:17 am
If you do not have a bluetooth card, then the brown cable will remain free. Just make sure to tape it inside the box where normaly the bluetooth card goes. Otherwise it might get caught into the vent of the PRo6100.

Hi everyone!
I have a powerproblem with my Toshiba Satellite P20. It seems that the power connection on the computer is bad, for some reason, (maybe the motherboard). It will work fine with the battery, but now the battery is almost dead. How can i attache the AC/DC to the battery pins inside the computer, or how can i recharge the battery with my AC/DC? Greatful for all help.
March 10th, 2007 at 5:17 am
I replace the connectors on power board and the mainboard.(Reflow of pins on long connectors also.Long connectors dont suffer from thermal expansion.)The small connector on power board and mainboard expand with heat and mechanical stress.I use Hirose High Temp reinforced connectors.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!
My Toshiba 6100 (4 years old) was intermitantly powering off without warning, and the power led would flash orange 8 times….long short short short long long short long. Taking out both batteries and allowing to reset to 30 seconds worked at first. But after about a week of this nonsense the laptop was just dead (except for the blinking).
So I followed your excellent directions and photos, removed the top case, and reseated the video and the power board. UP AND RUNNING! (I think it was the video board reseat that did it, the power board seemed to be fully seated).
I think the flexing of the case over time and the heating/cooling causes the video card to work its way off the socket.
Replacing the 2 connections to the Wifi on reassembly was a bit tricky. A short cut might be to leave the 2 antenna wires connected tot he Wifi card and just release the Wifi card from its slot. (Be careful not to strain the antenna wires.)
Thank you for an excellent web site. -A

I need help!!! This website is great, but no one has been able to help me yet. Here is my story. I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 2nd hand, and was suppose to be in good working order before shipment. When I received it, it would power up fine, but the screen was so dim it could hardly be seen. I plugged this to an external monitor and it worked great. I ended up replacing the inverter and the LCD screen to try to fix this problem but the screen is still very very dim. If you take a flashlight and look into the screen you can see it perfectly…..please, anyone…can anyone help????

Hi! Great instructions. I tried taking apart my Toshiba SP-6100 because of a video problem. I go stuck removing the top panel after removing the keyboard and all screws from the bottom as you instructed. The top panel won’t come apart from the body in the area of the DVD indicator light on the left of the laptop. Please help. A link to the picture of the problem area is attached.

Finally got it taken apart. What I found was a step was missing in the instructions. The DVD drive needs to be removed first by flipping the switch under the laptop to remove the drive cartridge. Then a screw will be revealed to be removed to lift the screen and top panel off.

I have a toshiba 6100 which was working fine until last night. I decided to conserve the battery life of the machine and so removed the battery from the system. I have dome this with IBM and Sony laptops before, but when I powered the toshiba up using only the a/c adapter the computer gave a bad checsum error and asked me to go into the bios. after this, it booted into XP normally, tho it did say the system time was wrong. thinking nothing more of it, i shut the computer down and left it. Today I find the computer completely lifeless. There are no lights that come on, the computer won’t boot up. I have tried putting the battery back in and using the a/c adapter, but there is nothing! I only bought this computer yesterday!! please can somebody help.

Hi folks,
i´m owning a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 running WinXP Sp2 full patched and with the lastes drivers.I only use the power supply unit. I reinstalled the maschine twice and the following error won´t went away.
If i boot up the maschine it freezes completly at the login screen of WinXP. During this time it won´t accept any keyboard or mouse (tried trackpoint and external mouse)input.
After a short periode of time (5- 15 min) it “wake up” and let me work. Sometimes I have to reboot the maschine several time until I let me login.
Several post that i found via let me think it have something todo with the motherboard. Did anyone of you have had this problem.
I need to know if my problem it releated to the problem listed above. If someone know how to fix it by myself. It would be great.
Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel,
It might happen because the video card is not making a good contact with the motherboard. Lift up the keyboard and gently press on the video card (lower left corner). It might help.

I have a 6100 that had a problem where only the top third or the display would appear normally and the rest was blank. Since the output to external monitor was normal, I figured it was a display problem. I used the instructions on this site to dismantle the bottom half, but had to figure out how to take apart the screen bezel myself (I can provide instructions if you tell me how to post.)
Long story short, it was not the lcd screen itself but the cable running to it. Specifically I discovered that the cable was being pinched by a metal shield on the inside of the top base plastic. (Didn’t even need to take the bezel apart to remove the shield, had I known.)
I plan to buy a replacement cable, but I was wondering if that shield is strictly necessary? I am afraid if I put it back it will just ruin the new cable also.
Can I leave the sheild out or will that damage the laptop?
October 11th, 2007 at 7:34 am
In post #44 Darren mentioned that he could not find the target of the light brown wire running from the lcd to what seems to be the bottowm of the system board. Does anyone know where this wire attatches? I can’t reassemble my computer until if figure that out. email me at mmenard79@hotmail.com if you can help or post here. Thanks.
October 11th, 2007 at 8:36 am
Matt,
The light brown wire is an antenna cable for the Bluetooth card. If you don’t have this module installed, just run the cable through the hole and attached in the Bluetooth card area with a sticky tape.

Chuck,
This is a really strange problem. I would suspect the keyboard but you say it has been replaced. The keyboard plugs directly into the motherboard or into the video card? Maybe this problem is somehow related to the video card?
This is just a guess.

Hi, Does anyone know how to upgrade the video card on the SP6100?
Generally they say it;s not possible on laptops, but the video card on this one does come out, and i’m guessing that some other higher specced toshibas might have higher specced video cards that might fit in this machine?
Thanks!

What size T? tamper-proof star bit (with hole in middle) do you need to remove the security screw from the base of the Tosh SatPro 6100 laptop to disassemble?
Is it smaller than a T8?

CJ; In comment no. 4 You mention a power board connected to the system board and the CRT Battery in a Tosh SP6100, but parts does not list a power board. Can you give more data on the power board ?
Can a SP6100 be upgraded to an 802.11g wireless LAN from the stock 802.11b one ?
Cam an SP6100 be upgraded from a USB1.1 to a USB2.0 ?

Hi, I also have a 6100. I had an artefacted display. I removed the keyboard to have a look at it. Pressing on the module gave a good response. But it still happens using the keyboard. It is also getting very warm/hot. So, I’m thinking of ordering a new module. But now my problem is that I unscrewed every screw and after lifting the upper part two wires were disconnected.A black an a brown one. I can’t find their connections on the board. Could you please help me out.

Hi Geeks
I have two Satellite Pro 6100 with one 30 GB Toshiba HDD. Both laptops run fine with this HDD. When I’m trying to install 60 GB Toshiba HDD (have tried few different of them) BIOS simply don’t detect HDD. When I’m trying to install identical working 30 GB Toshiba HDD from Dell laptop I’m getting Blue screen of death with suggestion to check for viruses, check HDD CONFIGURATION or connection on motherboard. But when I’m plugging back original HDD laptops works fine. So what HDD configurations can be. Original HDD hasn’t got any jumpers on it. Quite funny problem. I ‘ve tried to update BIOS, to reset BIOS to defoult - it doesn’t helps.
What ideas can gererate your bright minds?
February 14th, 2008 at 3:04 am
Thanks to you,
I successfully dismantled and remantled a Tosh SP6100.
I had a problem with intermittent LCD display defects, (a large area of the LCD was turning Black at random, sometimes for weeks on end). When i recently pressed around on the screen itself, the fault disappeared.
I could not find the problem, but your instructions were useful, and if the problem comes back, i will try and squeeze or make shim’s for the VIDEO board.
See Ya

Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100? Want to know where certain parts are ? Look at the disassembly guide here.
I used this disassembly guide (check it out, but look at
all the hyperlinks too (extra info is available). My system board was bad. I bought a new one on e-bay for $60.00 and replaced it using the guide and everything works great now.
Loose brown wire ? If you didn’t buy the blue tooth option, it simply goes nowhere. Just tape it inside the blue tooth compartment and leave it there
Blinking orange light, but no power light ? Use the disassembly guide and check the power cable connection
inside. Sometimes, may be the CMOS battery.

Thank you Mr.Truman for the nice advert you sent.
Eventually I find it (the CMOS battery) by myself.
The question is that I found a major disaster on the Motherboard (a blown-up component, mayby a capacitor or resistor) and at this point I need a new Motherboard.
Now, where I can find a NEW motherboard for the Toshiba 6100????????
Anyone whom provide this info will be blessed for eternity!!!!!!
Thank you all….

I’m answering to my own question- Have done clean instalation and no more blue screens

Hi All,
CMOS battery in my PRO 6100 is DEAD..
I tried all the normal spots where the battery usually is with no luck. I dismantled keyboard and checked that area.. Still no CMOS battery… You instructions were brilliant.. I was getting frustrated and was going to turn all HULK on it and smash it.
Now I just need to replace it with a new battery.
Is it anything special or just a CR202S 3v Battery with some wiring.
Thanks in advance guys.

These 70 comments had been very useful even for beginners like me. I have my S-pro610 for 3 years, I bought it used, this laptop was made in 2002. Recently I have a problem with the motherboard and the displays. I would like to find a motherboard with the displays for $58.95 could anyone help here?

I have some display problem when I started my window xp with my S-pro6100, how could I reconnect the motherboard with the display card? Do I need to buy a new motherboard(system board)? By pressing the bottom left end of the laptop the display seems a little better.

On the 6100 laptop what board does the keyboard snap into? The tab broke where the ribbon cable slides into then locks in. I don’t think it’s repairable, I was told it’s the system board, I think it’s the video board. I just not sure any help?

Had the CMOS/RTC battery issue so dismantled using the guide to reseat the power board on the system board - slight problem in that the connector stayed connected to the power board and snapped away from the system board with a tiny bit of the PCB. :^(
Anything that can be done here to repair it or am I really resigned to having to buy a new system board. If the latter, anyone know a good cheap source in the UK?
Thank you

I have opened the pro 6100 and found that the mother board is separated from the video display board. Now can someone help me to find a reasonable priced video board for my 6 years’ old laptop? All I need now is to replace my video/display board which is the size of about two credit cards laying side by side together.

Hi,
Great site but one question on stripping my sat pro6100 down I’ve disconnected the wifi (two wires) and split the two halves but I’ve now found a third wire brown in
colour with the same type connector and was wondering where it connects Thanks Tom

james, your video/display board on the 6100 should plug back into the motherboard.

Tom, that wire connects to the Bluetooth card(if one is installed) access is situated behind the smallest cover
on the underside of the laptop, if there`s no card just tape down behind the cover.

hello, my notebook Satellite pro6000 for about a month has a problem that sometimes appears after 10 minutes from switc on, sometimes after 2 hours. Suddenly the display will show thousands of colored horizontal lines with a hum in audio, and the notebook is frozen. Sometimes just switch off the power and connect again to make it work, sometimes takes about 30 minutes. What could be the defect. thank you

it sounds like faulty video ram, or a loose fitting video to motherboard connection, try pressing down on your keyboard on the middle right side fairly hard, but not enough to damage the keyboard(turn the laptop off first) or you could try dissasembling the laptop, and re-mounting the video card, if it`s still the same, get another cheap video card off ebay.

I heve problem with my toshiba sp 6100. When I swich it on, after 1-2 hours it turns off. I tried to remove all laptop, but that didin’t work. And when it turns off I need a lot of time to start it. I saw that sometimes it shuts down when temperature is ~45C, but sometimes it turns off when I try to move it (then temperature is ~37). What i should do?

I have a toshiba satellite pro 6000. Got the problem frequently described with the dreaded flashing orange light and failure to power up. I disassembled the laptop, and it looks like the connection between the system board and power board is intact (no broken pins). I tried disconnecting and reseating, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks.

I’ve having problems with my SP 6100 shutting down after about 10 mins. With or without the battery installed. The the orange light starts to flash, it flashes 6 short, 2 long. Does this mean something inperticular?

Hello There
The mouse has stopped working. I have tried PS2 and USB but both failed.
Sometime it is working when I start laptop the next day but soon as I move the laptop it stops working.
Only the BLUE button in the middel of the keyboard is working for mouse.
I have BIOS 1.9 (latest one), I thought I would reflash it with the same one but I get the error message that it is already the latest one and installation aborts.
Any idea on how to REFLASH the BIOS with same version or earlier one?
I have also tried installing another OS ubuntu but there is the same mouse problem. So it is confirm (I guess) that it is nothing to do with XP.
Any idea.
Regards
Scott

I have a Toshiba satellite pro 6100. 1) Some times the computer makes a single click sound and will abruptly shut down. If I remove the battery and re-install, i can reboot the system. 2) Also I have video problem, the computer will have vertical yellow strips on the display. 3) When I boot the system it reverts to the lowest video setting (600×800, and 4 bit). If I tried to change, the system fails to switch to higher resolution (1000X1200 or 1200×1600 at 16 or 32 bit depth). A few times i have been able to change to higher resolution. Can you suggest what might be the problem.
Thanks for any help or support you can provide. I was considering removing and re-seating the video board to fix the video problems. If you recommend any other solution I will be willing to try those.

I need help to repair to my 8 years old Sat Pro 6100, with 20G hard drive 384MB Ram 1.6 GHz clock speed. I could not find video and the picture is imperfect with lines, my friends opened and found the video card is not good and/or the connection wire to the mother board is loose/or not properly contacted. Today after a few weeks I found the opening AC power light flashing…
the timing beats of the flashing amber light is in the following sequence 1-2…1-2-3…1…1-2 total 8 flashs
Please also read my previous comments from James Ho 71,72 and 75. welcome advises, and thanks.

tony bullon,
1. Remove one screw securing the DVD drive. It’s located on the right side from the battery.
2. Slide the DVD lock down.
3. Pull the DVD drive from the laptop.

Reference to #88, My AC power light is flashing and unable to restart the laptop. Does anyone know how to find a better power pack, or adapter for my Satellite Pro6100, which is already 7 years old. May be if I can change the power pack I could find the video card problem.

thank you!! removing/reseating the battery board did the trick!
NOTE - when dealing with the bottom screws, the two long ones go in the back corners.
On the wireless board, my pc had a TORX style screw -with the center pin. This made it hard to remove/replace since I didn’t have that particular driver!! I was able to grasp the head with needle nose and loosen/remove/replace it. Otherwise would have been a show stopper!!
As far as I could tell tho, the wireless cover simply screws into the other part of the cover place - so anything to hold that cover in place would be adequate, i.e. tape would be enough - its not structural.
