Toshiba Satellite 5205. How to remove and replace laptop DVD/CD-ROM drive.

Toshiba Satellite 5205 remove replace DVD CD driveYou can use the Toshiba Satellite 5205 guide for removing and replacing the DVD/CD-ROM drive or the keyboard. On this model you have to remove the keyboard in order to remove and replace the DVD/CD-ROM drive because the optical drive securing screw is located under the keyboard. Always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery or you can damage the system board if you accidentally touch it with a screwdriver and shorten traces. Removing the keyboard strip is not very difficult, use your fingers to release the plastic latches. If you want to replace the keyboard, do not forget to unlock the connector on the system boar before you pull the cable.

    Chris,
I’m not sure about 1977098B number, probably this is some kind of internal part number.
If you are looking for a Toshiba part number, then you should use P000354740.

Stumbled on your website through a search engine looking for a replacement CD/DVD for a Toshiba Satellite 5205-s305. You have 3 drives listed. I found only the Teac DW-224E on Ebay, but they list a part #1977098B instead of P000354740 that you have listed. Are the part numbers different for different vendors, or is the part number specific to the item that will only work with my laptop.
    Thanks

    Hey, cj2600:

Thanks for the great guides. I just replaced the brake hinges on my 5205-s703, and when I powered it back on, the screen was almost black. Could faintly see things, including a faint “[SOMETHING] Failure” in the upper left hand corner. I have read above about the FL inverter, etc., but the screen was working fine before my “repair” job. Could it still be the FL converter, does this often happen with a connect/reconnect…?

Hey, I was wondering if its possible to replace the video card on this model? I’m getting the nasty red vertical lines after years of trusty service.

I tried using an external vga monitor and it does the same thing, so I’m guessing its the card. I’ve even de-installed and re-installed the video drivers many times to no avail.

Though heavy I kind of love this machine. Is it salvageable?

hold the c button down, or when the toshiba screen shows you see a lot of devices under that word? Quickly hold the left or right arrow button down and it will page through those options. I do not know what they represent per se but try to drop oit on the cd. Maybe 2nd one from the left.

    Hello,

I have 5205-S503 and I need to boot from CD-ROM but for some reason the laptop does not recognize that there’s a CD in the drive and continues to boot to Windows. I know there a particular key that must be press from a cold boot but can’t remember.
    Any ideas?

    thx

The flat cable that connects the SW board to the SYS board. Does anyone know the part number? Can I use a slightly longer flat cable here? It was difficult to get into the slot and now the metal pieces have broken.

I have a 5205-703 with loose hinges. My screen has also started to have a pink backround when the screen first turns on. Does anyone know how long it will take for the bulb to burn out? If I have another year or two I’ll replace the hinges, if not then I should start looking for a new laptop.

    Hello all,

You guys are so helpful, what a find this site is!

My Toshiba A105-S1013, a little over a year old, also has a loose lid. From what I’ve read here, it looks like replacement hinges may be in order.

Would any of you know the parts numbers, a source for obtaining them, and a source for instructions on how to replace them?

    Thanks!

    REM Says:

If you are bummed out by the prospect of ordering hinges and installing them, I have found a suitable and cheap alternative: put a strip of duct tape on the computer when it’s opened to the desired degree. I ran some kleenex down the inside of the tape so it doesn’t stick to itself when the computer is closed. Ain’t purty but it works.

Your instructions really saved me. I have a Satellite 5005-s504 and this was the only place that I could find any instructions on how to change the CD-Rom drive, which hasn’t worked for a while. There was just a slight variation on it, but it was basically the same process.
    THANK YOU!!!!

    cj2600,
I think it is the backlight since the screen started to go a pinkish color when turning on and after a few seconds was normal, before it stopped coming on. I was told that this is typically an indication of the backlight going out, I have been running this system 24/7 for about 3 years. Also, it is starting to over heat, to the point of shutting itself off. Do you reccomend just blowing out the ducts, replacing the thermal grease on the cpu, and/or replacing the heatsink?

    Robert Schwartz Says:

    Jerry, or anyone,
Where can I find the service manual for the Satellite 5205-S705? Ihave an overheating problem, but am wary of dismanteling the laptop without some guidence.

    Hi,

I’m trying to fix the noise my Fan is making, and thought I should try to clean the fan, and if it doesn’t work I’ll simply replace it. Anyway, it doesn’t change the fact that I gotta open up my laptop. Which is why, I was hoping you could show us how to go about changing fan.
At first, I thought I could refer to the toshiba 5105’s tutorial of how to swap the Video card, but I’d get stuck on step #1. The bottom of the computers aren’t similar…
    any help would be appreciated.

    cj2600 Says:

    Eric,
Here are part numbers for hinges, inverter and backlight bulb.

    Left hinge: P000353180
    Right hinge: P000353190
    Inverter: P000354880 or P000439470
    Backlight bulb: P000376820

I know that it’s possible to replace the backlight without replacing the entire screen, but I’ve never done it myself and cannot give you nay help with that. Before you replace the backlight bulb, try replacing the FL inverter board. If the inverter board is bad, the backlight will not light up.

    cj2600,
Any idea what the part numbers would be for Hinges, FL inverter, and backlight for a 5205-s705 (PS522U-XK00QR) would be? Also, is it even possible to replace the backlight without replacing the whole screen? Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
