Toshiba Satellite 5205. How to remove and replace laptop DVD/CD-ROM drive.
You can use the Toshiba Satellite 5205 guide for removing and replacing the DVD/CD-ROM drive or the keyboard. On this model you have to remove the keyboard in order to remove and replace the DVD/CD-ROM drive because the optical drive securing screw is located under the keyboard. Always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery or you can damage the system board if you accidentally touch it with a screwdriver and shorten traces. Removing the keyboard strip is not very difficult, use your fingers to release the plastic latches. If you want to replace the keyboard, do not forget to unlock the connector on the system boar before you pull the cable.
Need spare parts for your laptop? Search here by the laptop model and part name or number.

Took me all of 20 minutes. First time doing it. Don’t freak out when keyboard cable pops out. Thats the way it’s supposed to look (no connector at end). There is one screw this tutorial doesn’t mention. On bottom side of laptop, right at the end of the CD drive, towards the front. This screw requires removal as well as transferring a rail from the old to the new drive. Also, the replacement drive I used required I change faceplates. Very small screws requiring very small jewelers phillips head. Otherwise, thanks for this tutorial.

Hi, thanks for the great instructions. But how does one clean the cooling apparatus and fan?
May 10th, 2006 at 9:58 pm
Stephanie,
This model doesn’t have a hatch on the bottom to access the heatsink easily. You can clean the heatsink with a compressed air. Find a can of compressed air and blow inside the heatsink gril on the side of the laptop.
If you want to replace the fan or apply new thermal grease on the CPU, you have to open the laptop case and remove the top cover.
May 28th, 2006 at 4:39 am
I followed the instructions and it took about 10 minutes to disassemble and reassemble. As JB said in the first post, one securing screw is not mentioned that needs to come out. The screw is on the bottom corner below the cd-drive and listed as a B6.

Hey, great help guide! I was wondering if you have any ideas on how I can fix the loose screen lid on my 5205. How do I remove the wobble? I’ve found with other laptops that usually what’s required is tightening the hinges. Is that what may be able to solve this issue?
May 31st, 2006 at 9:47 pm
Hey Jerry,
You are right. On some models you can remove the screen lid wobble by tightening the hinges. On these models the hinge consists of two parts- the top part that connects to the LCD screen and the bottom part that connects to the laptop top cover.
Unfortunately, hinges on Toshiba Satellite 5205 were designed differently. It’s just one single piece and there are no screws to connect the top part to the bottom part. If the laptop screen is loose, the hinges have to be replaced to fix the problem. It is very possible that one of the hinges or both hinges are broken.

Hey cj2600! Thanks for the response. I do then have a few more questions if you don’t mind. I found the service manual for 5200 series laptop, and it mentions something about torque in regards to the amount of tightening required for screwing in components. Is there any device that allows me to measure this so I know I’m applying the correct level of torque when twisting screws back on?
Also, any ideas on where I can find replacement hinges?
June 5th, 2006 at 12:05 am
Jerry,
I’ve never used torque key during laptop assembly, just a regular screwdriver. May be I’m wrong.
You should search for hinges by the Toshiba part number. Give me your laptop full model name and part number (example Satellite 5205-S505, PS520U-31P1RV) and I will find the part number for you.
June 8th, 2006 at 12:07 am
I have a Satellite 5205-S503 and I’m pretty sure that the AC jack has lost its proper connection. Have you had any experience with repairing this type of problem? My warranty is expired so I’m all on my own here. Thanks in advance.
June 9th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
Okay cj2600. The laptop model and part number are as follows: 5205-S703, PS520U-31P03V
Thanks!
June 9th, 2006 at 10:14 pm
Hey Donnie,
I haven’t repaired the jack problem on this particular model. I know that the jack is not a part of the system board. If the power jack is bad, you only have to replace the power jack harness. It is necessary to take the laptop apart completely. Toshiba part number P000352750.
Make sure that it is not the AC adapter plug problem. Sometimes the cable connected to the AC adapter plug gets bad and the laptop loosing the power when you wiggle the plug. You can test it with a millimeter.
June 9th, 2006 at 10:19 pm
Jerry,
P000353180 – Toshiba part number for the left hinge
P000353190 – Toshiba part number for the right hinge

cj2600,
The display on my wife’s 5025 just “let loose” one day. For awhile it did not stay up at all unless perfectly balanced at 90 degrees. We fiddled with the two screws just below the LCD (just above the hinges) and tried to realign them and screw them in tighter and this seemed to semi-fix things but the screen is still loose. So I would also be interested in replacing the hinges. The model is 5025-S119, P/N PS522U-XK00YV (or maybe -XKOOYV?).
My other question is: will it be obvious how to replace the hinges when I get them? The maintainance manual does not give instructions for this.
Thanks!
June 13th, 2006 at 10:15 pm
Hey Mofongo,
Unfortunately, I cannot find any information for 5025. I guess this model is not sold in the USA.
For most laptops it would be obvious how to replace the hinges after you remove the top cover assembly and open the display assembly. Usually you have to remove a few screws from the bottom side of the top cover and a few screws from the display cover/LCD screen.

hi guys…i’ve read through your messages and i have a similar problem with my toshiba satellite 5205 S-505 PS52OU-31P1RV. the hinges holding the lcd screen are either extremely loose or completely broken cuz the screen doesn’t hold itself up at any angle..Any advice would be great and also if anyone knows the piece numbers for the hinges on these laptops i’d be very grateful…thanks
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:09 am
cj2600,
Sorry…I mistyped. It is a 5205-S119. It’s basically identical to the 5205-S505 but missing one feature (I think it’s a video input?).
Thanks!
Mofongo

cj2600,
It seems that the lamp/backlight has gone out on my 5205-s705 PS522U-XK00QR. I have it connected to an external monitor and if I clone the display I can see faint white dialog boxes move as I move them on the external monitor. Is this only the lamp? What is the part numbers for what I might need to replace and do you have any “How to’s” on how to do the replacement?
Thanks,
-Eric

The LCD hinges can’t be adjusted on a 5205. The laptop and LCD lid housing must both be completely disassembled to access and change said hinges. This job is definitely NOT for the faint of heart.
Further the two screws under the LCD (on either side of the TOSHIBA logo) aren’t there for hinge adjustment–they’re there to hold the LCD’s bezel and mask together. Over-tightening them will damage the LCD lid, just making a bad issue that much worse.

My 5205s704 has developed a raspy vibrating fan noise. I have vacuumed it and plown air through it. It only stops it temporarily. Can I get to it and clean it?
Thanks,
Jim

I haven’t created a complete disassembly guide for Satellite 5205 yet. Here’s a guide for taking apart Satellite 5105. I guess it should be pretty close.
October 25th, 2006 at 11:55 am
I followed steps for removing DVD-RAM drive but when I go to push it out it wont budge one bit…I have the 5205 s705 could there be another screw holding it in.?? and does anyone know how to remove the hardrive from the laptop?
October 26th, 2006 at 8:47 am
Kylw,
I think I forgot to mention one screw on the bottom of the laptop, but I’m not sure because I don’t have this laptop right now and cannot confirm it. Try removing the screw that is located in the lower right corner on the step 1 or may be one that is on the right side from the subwoofer.
Please let me know with screw it is and I’ll mark it on the guide.
October 26th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
Actually, it’s my fan that makes loud noises, not the DVD/CD-ROM Drive on my Toshiba Satellite 5205.
Any comments?
Thanks,
Jim
October 26th, 2006 at 2:49 pm
Hey I did what you said I unscrewed both that looked as though they were under the dvd-drive and it worked. One was a b4 and the other a b6. They were visably underneath the dvd -drive…I hope this helped and thank you for your help as well. One more question. As you may know the matshita uj-810 is by far the most flawed dvd-ram drive ever to be made so I am looking to replace it. Just curious on what will fit in the 5205 s705. If you could lead me in the right direction…i just want a cheap one that actually works i have a really good external so I just need it to boot discs.
Thanks again
Kyle

Another quicky…it seems you know your fair share about the notebook. Just wondering if you have a step-by-step on removing/installing a harddrive. If you could get back to me on that it would be exellent.
Thanks
Kyle
October 26th, 2006 at 3:24 pm
Kylw,
Here are some other drives that are listed for Satellite 5205-S705.
Panasonic UJ-820BTJL (DVD-ROM) – part number P000422710
Panasonic UJ-820BTJD (DVD-ROM) – part number P000422720
Teac DW-224E (DVD-CD/RW) – part number P000354740
Now about the hard drive. You should be easily access it from the bottom if you remove the cover. The cover is located on the bottom of the laptop, on the opposite time from the touchpad. Remove the cover and you’ll figure it out.

Thanks a lot I really apreciate it.

Hey me again. As you probeably already know I am upgrading my notebook as much as I can. I am now looking at the memory and wondering if you can upgrade it past 1GB. I looked at the specs of the memory other than the amount of mbs it was and found other memory cards with the same specs but with more memory like 1 GB. I am just wondering if it is possible or if it will not work. If you could get back to me that would be great.
Thanks
Kyle
October 31st, 2006 at 8:57 am
DDR266, 266MHz, PC2100, 200p SODIMM, 2.5v, Sync
Is what I mean by other specs. I found this website with 1 GB ram with the same specs as above.
This is what I am looking at.
November 1st, 2006 at 11:48 pm
Kylw,
I checked Toshiba specification for Satellite 5205-S705 and it says that the memory is expendable to 1024MB (1GB). So it should be 1GB total (SlotA+SlotB=1GB).
Toshiba suggests the following memory type: 2.5V, SODIMM, PC2100 DDR. The memory type you mentioned in the comment 29 should work fine.
Is it possible that the laptop BIOS will recognize more then 1GB? Yes, it is, but the only way to find it out is to test the laptop with 1GB memory stick. Are you ready to buy it just for test?

I tryed a new samson drive from newegg but the laptop did not like it or see that it was there, but it did have power. Or if any one wants to sell there used one I would buy it. Thanks
November 7th, 2006 at 5:20 pm
Andrew,
Have you tried searching for your drive on eBay? I found a multirecorder for Satellite 5205 for $215. I think if you wait for a while, you can find it much cheaper.
November 14th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
Please, is everyone here able to help me find a CDRW/DVD slim bay drive (preferably used) compatible with Toshiba Satellite 5205-S503. I am desperate , i was looking everywhere on the net, and all i come up was over $200. I will travel to Europe in 2 weeks and so far i wasn’t able to find a used/new CDRW/DVD internal drive.I was looking even in the computer parts stores but no luck.
My laptop is an old Toshiba Satelitte 5205-S503 and was working fine till few days ago.
Drive Manufacturer: TEAC DW-224E-T1
PART NO:19770980-T1
Serial: 0373190
Thank You so much

cj2600,
Any idea what the part numbers would be for Hinges, FL inverter, and backlight for a 5205-s705 (PS522U-XK00QR) would be? Also, is it even possible to replace the backlight without replacing the whole screen? Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
November 16th, 2006 at 11:46 pm
Eric,
Here are part numbers for hinges, inverter and backlight bulb.
Left hinge: P000353180
Right hinge: P000353190
Inverter: P000354880 or P000439470
Backlight bulb: P000376820
I know that it’s possible to replace the backlight without replacing the entire screen, but I’ve never done it myself and cannot give you nay help with that. Before you replace the backlight bulb, try replacing the FL inverter board. If the inverter board is bad, the backlight will not light up.

Hi,
I’m trying to fix the noise my Fan is making, and thought I should try to clean the fan, and if it doesn’t work I’ll simply replace it. Anyway, it doesn’t change the fact that I gotta open up my laptop. Which is why, I was hoping you could show us how to go about changing fan.
At first, I thought I could refer to the toshiba 5105’s tutorial of how to swap the Video card, but I’d get stuck on step #1. The bottom of the computers aren’t similar…
any help would be appreciated.

Jerry, or anyone,
Where can I find the service manual for the Satellite 5205-S705? Ihave an overheating problem, but am wary of dismanteling the laptop without some guidence.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
cj2600,
I think it is the backlight since the screen started to go a pinkish color when turning on and after a few seconds was normal, before it stopped coming on. I was told that this is typically an indication of the backlight going out, I have been running this system 24/7 for about 3 years. Also, it is starting to over heat, to the point of shutting itself off. Do you reccomend just blowing out the ducts, replacing the thermal grease on the cpu, and/or replacing the heatsink?

5205-S705 BIOS battery Access?
I am sure most these owners are having this problem at this point. They are about that old and in need of new battery. My time keeps changing, a sure sign.

I have a Toshiba 5205-S503 and I added an additional hard drive to the bay years ago. All of a sudden, the hard drive is not recognized by the laptop anymore. Any idea on how I can make it work again?
February 23rd, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Your instructions really saved me. I have a Satellite 5005-s504 and this was the only place that I could find any instructions on how to change the CD-Rom drive, which hasn’t worked for a while. There was just a slight variation on it, but it was basically the same process.
THANK YOU!!!!
March 1st, 2007 at 5:58 pm
If you are bummed out by the prospect of ordering hinges and installing them, I have found a suitable and cheap alternative: put a strip of duct tape on the computer when it’s opened to the desired degree. I ran some kleenex down the inside of the tape so it doesn’t stick to itself when the computer is closed. Ain’t purty but it works.

Hello all,
You guys are so helpful, what a find this site is!
My Toshiba A105-S1013, a little over a year old, also has a loose lid. From what I’ve read here, it looks like replacement hinges may be in order.
Would any of you know the parts numbers, a source for obtaining them, and a source for instructions on how to replace them?
Thanks!

I have a 5205-703 with loose hinges. My screen has also started to have a pink backround when the screen first turns on. Does anyone know how long it will take for the bulb to burn out? If I have another year or two I’ll replace the hinges, if not then I should start looking for a new laptop.
June 19th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
The flat cable that connects the SW board to the SYS board. Does anyone know the part number? Can I use a slightly longer flat cable here? It was difficult to get into the slot and now the metal pieces have broken.

Hello,
I have 5205-S503 and I need to boot from CD-ROM but for some reason the laptop does not recognize that there’s a CD in the drive and continues to boot to Windows. I know there a particular key that must be press from a cold boot but can’t remember.
Any ideas?
thx
June 23rd, 2007 at 6:41 pm
hold the c button down, or when the toshiba screen shows you see a lot of devices under that word? Quickly hold the left or right arrow button down and it will page through those options. I do not know what they represent per se but try to drop oit on the cd. Maybe 2nd one from the left.

Hey, I was wondering if its possible to replace the video card on this model? I’m getting the nasty red vertical lines after years of trusty service.
I tried using an external vga monitor and it does the same thing, so I’m guessing its the card. I’ve even de-installed and re-installed the video drivers many times to no avail.
Though heavy I kind of love this machine. Is it salvageable?
June 28th, 2007 at 7:09 am
Hey, cj2600:
Thanks for the great guides. I just replaced the brake hinges on my 5205-s703, and when I powered it back on, the screen was almost black. Could faintly see things, including a faint “[SOMETHING] Failure” in the upper left hand corner. I have read above about the FL inverter, etc., but the screen was working fine before my “repair” job. Could it still be the FL converter, does this often happen with a connect/reconnect…?
June 29th, 2007 at 8:03 am
Stumbled on your website through a search engine looking for a replacement CD/DVD for a Toshiba Satellite 5205-s305. You have 3 drives listed. I found only the Teac DW-224E on Ebay, but they list a part #1977098B instead of P000354740 that you have listed. Are the part numbers different for different vendors, or is the part number specific to the item that will only work with my laptop.
Thanks
June 29th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Chris,
I’m not sure about 1977098B number, probably this is some kind of internal part number.
If you are looking for a Toshiba part number, then you should use P000354740.

Hi Ben,
I have the same problem with my Toshiba 5205-S703 laptop. I am getting vertical lines on the display. This is present on both my laptop display and also any external monitors I hook it up to. Like you I am suspecting a video card problem of some sort. My question is the same as yours. Is it possible to fix the video board problem to alliviate the vertical lines porblem? Or is my laptop toast and I’ll have to replace it? I hope very much someone can shed alittle light on repairing this unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please Help.
Regards,
Will

The video is not replaceable. If you can find another model with a broken screen that they are getting rid of… go for it. Unfortunately the video is not replaceable. There may be other underlying problems that are plaguing your machine.
Anyone that has replaced their DVD drive out been able to use the bezel of the old drive to put on a new drive? I am refurbishing a friend’s laptop to rebuild it completely.
After all this is done, if ANYONE needs a replacement copy of the restore DVD, let me know. Because it is no longer available from the manufacturer, might as well everyone help out!
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:18 am
I take that back… Quite possibly follow the same directions for the 5105 to disassemble… Because the computer industry doesn’t change much in 1 year (besides processors), the housings and such could very much be the same. Let us know what you find out.
July 29th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Ok some new info for those that are interested. I own a 5205-703 so all info I have will be based on that model.
Brake hinges… I found mine on e-bay for $7 shipped. These came off a parted out laptop from Europ (a 5200 series, which uses the same case) Sometimes you can get a much better deal on purchasing parts for lesser known laptops.
The brake hinges was a 3 hour transplant. The entire laptop must be taken apart, including all external screws and three internal screw located at the DVD player, the center of the main board, and one on the upper left.
The LCD needed the side screw removed as well as the ones on the hinge.
I decided to clean my laptop at the same time. Its amazing how much dust can acumulate over time. I actually had dust bunnies in the thing! I used lopts of electronics parts cleaners, Q-tips and caned air.
About a month after replacing teh brake hinges, my cpu fan started making that screaching noise mentioned before. This was due to the solid bearing on the fan motor running dry. You need to remove the CPU fan, then take the aluminum cover plate off of it. The plate is held on by three tabs. These must be bent away. Wash the cover plate and remove the fan. The fan has no electronic parts, nust the blades, a magnetic ring and the solid bearing. Wash this with electronic parts cleaner and a toothbrush. Let dry. Clean the motorring bearing with electronic parts cleaner and a Q-tip.
After everything is dry, apply some silicon/teflon grease to the bearing and bearing shaft on the fan. Put everything back togeather and you should no longer have any loud fan issues.
My backlight finally blew (it was glowing pink before I ran into hinge problems). This should be an easy fix after all teh other repairs I have made to this thing.
While I’m at it I think I will add a new 100GB 2nd hard drive and a faster processor If I can find one (I think the 2.4GHZ P4 ran on the same bus speed as the 2.0, but I’m not sure).

hi guys i am hardware expart based on desktop computers but in laptop iam not good iam good only on desktop i read all instruction on how replace hardware on laptop but can i replace processor of laptop?i need to know this if anyone know this i need help you can contact me through my email adress which is malyambare@yahoo.com

Isaak, you can replace the processor. You need to remove the palmrest section (upper body casing). I do not belive you need to remove the screen.
The fan/heatsink/subwoofer will need to be removed, then turn the screw next to the processor to release the pins. It pulls up like a desktop processor.
UPDATE: don’t bother trying to replace the bulb on the LCD panel. It is too tightly packed into the other components. I was unable to get everythig to fit back togeather. So I am ordering a new LCD panel.
Upgrades so far:
New motherboard (2005)
New battery (2007)
New AC adapter(2007)
New HDD (2006)
2nd HDD (2006)
Max memory upgrade (2005)
On tap:
New LCD
TV tuner
Windows XP Media Center
New 200 gig HDD
Wish me luck!

Dan Leavitt,
Good to see you active here. I have a 5205-
s705 and as you know it the hinge
(left) just gave out…after reading your article… been looking online for one/pair have you seen any more hinges about? Can you post a link or phone number?
Thanks, YOu know this model is going by the way but I have a 2.4 gig processor…..and that is still not too shabby for a laptop.
Has anyone ever put more than a gig of memory in their 5200 series?

Brian restore DVD would be nice what does it do exactly?
August 18th, 2007 at 10:57 pm
Billy,
Restore DVDs are not interchangeable. You’ll have to find a restore DVD for Satellites M35X to make it work on M35X.
@dael
you can use the restore DVD to reimage the hard drive back to factory defaults. The restore process erases everything from the hard drive and loads fresh OS, the way you bought the laptop.
August 18th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
dael,
You can find new hinges for a Satellite 5205-S705 by the following part numbers:
Left hinge: P000353180
Right hinge: P000353190
Google for the part number and you’ll find it soon. Good luck!

Now before I go through the troubble of ordering the S705 Media Center restor CDs, does anyone know if it requires a BIOS from an S705 for identification?
I bought a S705 case for the product key and serial numbers, but my S703 case is in much better condition and the motherboard and processor are from the 703 (the only difference between the two models is the 705 included a TV tuner, a 2.4 GHZ P4 and Media Center instead of a 2.0 GHZ XP)?
This time arround I will be shooting pictures of the upgrades which should help others.
August 19th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Dan Leavitt,
To the best of my knowledge, it doesn’t required any BIOS identification and you can use S705 restore for S703 laptop. I believe the set of restore CDs for Satellite 5205 will for for any other flavor of 5205, so you shouldn’t have any problem.
August 19th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
… fron Dan Leavitt…
“I bought a S705 case for the product key and serial numbers, but my S703 case is in much better condition and the motherboard and processor are from the 703 (the only difference between the two models is the 705 included a TV tuner, a 2.4 GHZ P4 and Media Center instead of a 2.0 GHZ XP)?”
yes dan I have a 705 and that is what I got, tv card and a 2.4 gig proc.. The video is 64meg nvidia Force FX Go5600, media center was updated 2x’s since I bought it and I think the hardware is only good to the 2004MCE.
I cannot download Media Player 11 because of the lack of update so I have hit a dead end there.
If you have a spare hinge let me know. $7 was a steal from what I am finding so far.
August 19th, 2007 at 9:36 pm
Dael, keep in mind that the 5200 is essentially the same computer (but for the Euro and Middle East market). I searched Ebay for “Toshiba 5200″ and got some good results with parts. Most 5205 owners are not aware of inter-compatibility of components, and these computers are rare hens in the US. The result is a very inexpensive buy.
Now to find a 2.4 ghz processor, new keyboard, the tuner modual and then I’ll worry about ordering XP-Mrdia Center backup CDs from Toshiba.
If anyone has these parts for sale, let me know.
On a side note, I was playing around with my new Qosmio G45. Except for graphics, the performance is almost identical. I belive this will change with an upgrade to Vista 64 bit and apps to match, but it was interesting to see my new laptop grind away on photo editing applications just the same way my 5205 had.
I guess asside from the convergance factor (I got it for the HD-dvd burner, larger screen and HDTV capabilities), there is little reason to get a new laptop these days.
My wife better be pleased with all the work I’m putting into this to get her a good machine.
August 19th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Dan they now have HDTV tuners USB for $60 at Radio Shack with rebate. why worry about a tuner? use the bay for and extra drive or something
August 25th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I finally resolved my vertical line problem to the machine getting too hot. The heat was due to dust buildup inside causing overheating.
It turns out dust will help fool the temperature sensor – so the fan wasn’t coming on or to full speed!
I’ve never cleaned mine inside via disassembly, but occasionally I’ll mouth the back vent and blow hard to clear most of the dust away. That keeps it running cool.
I use speedfan to monitor temperatures.
But more than likely you don’t need new video – just to dust out the inside so it can run cooler. Consider the vertical lines a past-due dusting reminder.

Did someone say the M35 hinges work in the 5205 series?
August 26th, 2007 at 10:03 am
dael,
Nope, they will not work. M35 and 5205 hinges are different.
September 5th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
Well I got some used parts off e-bay. A backlight inverter and a new LCD panel along with a new lid (because mine was scratched up pretty bad).
I put everyrthing togeather and the backlight still won’t turn on. The LCD had a faint image so I know tha LCD is fine, but I don’t know if my inverter or the new LCD panel is bad.
I tried to use both inverters (my old one and the e-bay purchase) but still no backlight.
Does anyone know what the output voltage for the inverter should be? I want to test this with a volt meeter to rule out the iverter.

Did you do the function button and F6/f7 to increase decrease lamp? It is a toshiba brightness function.

for Toshiba Satellite 5205 How to clean heatsink and CPU fans to fix overheating ?
September 12th, 2007 at 3:25 am
Hey there, I have a Satellite 5205-S503 and the port where you plug the ethernet cable in is not working. When I try to plug the cable in the port goes inside of the laptop. I am not sure if the port is not working, or just loose inside the case. I have no idea how to take this apart, or find a new part if that is the case. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.
September 17th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
So I have a Satellite 5205-S705 that I am repairing. I am trying to utilize the restore DVD. I have been trying to boot to that disc, but it will not boot at all.
I have tried the C key.
I have tried F12 to switch to a different source.
Nothing works!
All parts work independently from the computer.
Any ideas?
Should I have created a hybrid restore disc that will boot to DOS? Or have the hard drive do that?
September 17th, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Still dealing with continued problems… I was curious if someone could make an image of the hard drive just after a rebuild using Norton Ghost and burn the result onto a DVD or two? I can’t rebuild the laptop hard drive with the restore DVD. I don’t know why, but it just doesn’t want to do it. I can afford to comp you the cost of the media and postage. 5205-S705. Please help.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Brian C,
I believe I had a similar situation in the past but it was a long time ago and I don’t remember exactly what I did, but here’s my guess.
I think you have to change boot order in the BIOS and right now the HDD is the first boot device. You can test it by removing the HDD and booting from the CD without HDD installed. Can you boot from the CD when the hard drive is removed?
I believe you cannot access and configure the BIOS on this model normal way (by pressing Esc or F1 or F2 etc…) on startup. I think you can change the BIOS settings through the Toshiba utility in Windows. Boot into Windows (if you can) and find this utility. Access the BIOS and set the CD/DVD drive as first device in the boot order. After that you should be able to start from the CD and reimage the hard drive.
September 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm
Booting to Windows is not possible. I will double-check the BIOS settings, but F12 doesn’t do anything for me… it just boots the hard drive. “C” does ABSOLUTELY nothing.

I have a toshiba pro A10 and need to boot from cd rom, I have tried the bios to boot from cd rom and it still boots from the hard drive. Any ideas?

Brian C
The way to change the boot order is to press the right or left arrow key when it is booting up, this will then enable to you to scroll through the various icons that represent the different boot source options.
once you have selected your icon hit enter and it should then boot from that source.
November 6th, 2007 at 6:12 am
Dan Leavitt, if you still want a tv tuner, I have a spare I would be willing to part with. 30 bucks? I got 2 when I got my 705, it was a display model and for some reason it come with 2 tuners.
Email me G W Cullen @ gmail dot come
Just take out the spaces.
My CD drive is dead again, I was lucky to find a 810b with the right firmware installed last year when my hdd died, it got me up and running, but now its dead again. I tried upgrading to a 841 I think but could not get it be only slave (I think) so I was never able to use it. Has anyone been able to get a modern drive to work in the 5205 series?
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Does anyone know if a Pioneer DVR-K06 can be used to replace the original CD/DVD drive in a 5205-S703?
Also, are adapters available to install third party hard drives into the style bay compartment?
January 12th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Hey there!
I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5200-902 (which is exactly the same with the 5205-S705).
Since yesterday I have a flickering problem with my LCD screen.
Please check the following short video to see what I mean: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4545062325473598117
What is going wrong?
Is it a bad connection because of a loose cable
or
is it time to replace my LCD screen?
My graphic card seems to be ok since I can connect an external monitor and have no flickering to the external monitor. So, the problem is located somewhere at the LCD…
Can you supply the proper instruction in order to disassemble and reassemble the LCD?
I would appreciate any help!
Thank you for your time reading my problem.
January 17th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I have found good instructions concerning the LCD disassembling… –> http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions_en,toshiba,step4.shtml
Do you have any idea what is that coulb be going wrong with my LCD?
I think there 4 possibilities:
1. The LCD needs replacement
2. The video cable needs replacement
3. The inverter that supplies the power needs replacement
4. The inverter or backlight cable needs replacement
5. Your opinion
Please if you are familiar with my problem I would appreciate your help.
Thanx in advance!
Andreas
p.s. The only way to work with my laptop rightnow is to connect to an external monitor.
January 18th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Well today the things changed… my monitor turned almost totally black! I can hardly see the desktop.
However, the flickering seems to have stopped.
What is going wrong???
January 18th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
I think my problem is exactly the same as the one described by Eric at message #39 and by Dan Leavitt at message #64.
Before all these events I had also this pinkish colors when my monitor was off and was normal after a few seconds.
Dan at message #68 what was really the problem with packing everything back together?
Dan after message #81 did you find what was going wrong? Did you fix it?
Was the new inverter or the new LCD bad?

for GilC
who asked “Also, are adapters available to install third party hard drives into the style bay compartment?”
— Look for harddrive Caddy for Toshiba 8100. Tosh 8000 and other models maybe(?) use the same caddy. On ebay, look for the caddy that comes with the plastic adapter. You should find these for about $14 to $20 incl shipping.
for Andreas
It’s good if you get video on external monitor. Maybe you’ve fixed your display by now. Here’s my experience with 5205-S505.
* ribbon cable (poss. issue with other laptops) seems like a reliable component and design in 5205’s
* I replaced the Backlight (CCF? it’s called?) when I had problems similar to yours… flicker, then darkening, then almost nothing on screen and ext. okay. Part cost me
February 11th, 2008 at 1:34 am
larrym thanx for your reply…
The problem still remains due to lack of time.
In the meantime I tested the output of the inverter and looks ok since it is more than 1000V AC…
So probably the problem is the backlight bulb…
I hesitate a bit ordering a new backlight bulb as I am afraid that I will not be able to replace it.
How was the procedure to your 5205-S505?
Did you find any difficulties reassembling the LCD?
February 16th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Hi, I just found this side and think it’s really useful. Unfortunately I couldn’t find yet what I need. The hinge of my Toshiba 5200-903 is broken and I have no clue how I can fix it. Can someone by any chance help me out with this? Pleeeeaaaassseeeee, I love my baby.
February 27th, 2008 at 12:33 am
hey could anybody tell me how to remove the cd drive on a toshiba satellite m45??
March 15th, 2008 at 3:16 am
Help!!!! Toshiba seems to have problems with cd/dvd drive. it opes but reads no cd/dvd…..
Pls any sugestion
March 18th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Similar backlight problem with my Toshiba 5205-S504 (I think S504 – I’m not at home right now). I replaced the Inverter but no change. I can still barely see the desktop icons.
So is my next step the backlight (CCF?) or the light tube (or is this the same thing)? Not sure if I want to attempt this fix.
May 24th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I have a 5205-s503 and im trying to reinstall xp. ive got the correct restore discs. i have installed whatever toshiba said i needed to correct the wrong machine errors. when i boot i hold f12 and then press right twice to select cd rom drive. the screen goes black and an underscore blinks in the top left hand corner like three times and then it goes to a screen with safe mode boot options. it nevers boots from any of the options. it shows the xp boot screen then goes black and nothing ever happens. every onve in a while it boots to a blue screen with some kinda bios error. sorry for all the detail, but please help. im at my wits end.
June 7th, 2008 at 8:47 am
I followed the instructs to replace the DVD drive (used the UJ-811B). When I boot, I get the following message:
PXE-E61 Media Failure, Check Cable
I can’t get past this. I checked the cable connection, and everything is secure. The drive revs and I can hear the CD working – the indicator light works properly, etc…
Since this laptop does not have an extensive BIOS interface, I am stuck. Any ideas?
June 7th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Jeff,
It looks like for some reason the laptop “cannot see” the hard drive. Enter the BIOS setup menu. Can you see the hard drive in the BIOS? Is the hard drive LED flashing when you turn on the laptop? Can you hear the hard drive spinning?
June 8th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Thanks cj6200. I can’t seem to find a ‘BIOS setup menu’. I can access the boot menu (F2), but holding the escape and/or F1 gets me a very minimal BIOS interface – I can only change the system time, date, or restore defaults…nothing like the standard desktop BIOS where I can view all IDE devices, etc…
I will check the lights and listen for the drive. Until then, any ideas on the BIOS?
Also – does that ‘media failure, check cable’ message refer to the HDD? I figured it was referring to the optical since that is what I had just installed. Thanks so much!
June 9th, 2008 at 9:35 am
I checked the lights and listened for the HDD.
The HDD light flickers and then doesn’t come back on. As the light flickers, the HDD whirs, but then nothing else happens.
Hope this helps. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
July 19th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
So I had some busted hinges on my 5205-S503 and used this, the 5201 guide on this site, and the Toshiba 5200 series pdf instruction manual I found online to disassemble it with a friend of mine who’s done extensive desktop repairs (but this was his first laptop).
First, CHRIST was this a major headache. It took us five hours + to totally disassemble, documenting every step of the way, labelling screws etc, and we still ended up with four screws leftover (granted three of them I know exactly where they were supposed to go just forgot to put them in and didn’t feel like disassembling it again to do so, since it was just the speaker screws and one B20 that we put the screw on the hinge in the wrong place so blocked it. The fourth I think I know where it goes but it was the same issue).
Anyway, we reassembled it and now the monitor is totally dead. Going into my device manager, I see the Cicso Systems VPN adapter is disabled. If that’s the teeny tiny little ribbon cable that I had hell’s own time plugging back in because even with my tiny hands there simply wasn’t enough room to negotiate and get it in there and I probably damaged it (some faint scratches but it seemed alright, and I had similar problems with the touchpad cable and it works fine) or something isn’t plugged in all the way or something.
I’m wondering if you could hazard a guess as to what exactly. It doesn’t appear there’s even power to the screen, but everything else boots up fine and in fact I’ve got it hooked up to an external CRT monitor and its working fine (save not playing videos, though it will play youtube, all I get is sound though that may be screen resolution or something I don’t know).
I’m willing to take it all back apart again if I can get another five hours uninterrupted and find some better/more model specific documentation online than what I’ve currently got (neither lined up exactly it was a cross-referencing between the two and random guesses). I’d really like to get this working without resulting in outside help if possible as the cost of labor alone would probably be more than this thing is worth anymore (its a good six years old at least). TIA
July 22nd, 2008 at 4:49 am
Van, if you use a flashlight to send light on your monitor do you see your desktop icons/wallpaper?
Try doing that in a dark room.
In case you are able to see something, then 4 things could happen:
1. The power cable going from the mainboard to the inverter has been disconnected.
2. The power cable going from the inverter to the backlight of your monitor has been disconnected
3. The inverter is out of order and needs replacement (it should have an output of more than 1000Volts AC).
4. The backlight bulb is dead.
In case you are not able to see something then you should check if your video cable is disconnected from the mainboard or the monitor. But I don’t think that this is the case, since you should then see a white monitor, instead of a black one because of the backlight.
Good luck!
July 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 am
Would that make the LCD display disabled in the Device Manager? Which one is the video cable? The tiniest ribbon cable with ‘SYS’ printed on it? because that one came loose several times in the course of trying to plug it back in. Are there any specific tools or techniques you have for testing to see if its in all the way or is there a way I can test the monitor while its all still taken apart that’s not too horribly risky? It is a pain in the ass to take this thing apart and put it back together every time I want to test a connection.
July 22nd, 2008 at 5:38 am
Since your monitor is disabled in the “Device Manager” then it is not connected properly.
The video cable is the flat one that connects at the back of the LCD monitor.
Make sure that you have not connected it the wrong way.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:20 pm
well shit.
So I took it apart again, checked all the connections, replaced all the screws that I had missed the first time (only took 1.5 hours this time) and booted it up; same problem. The Cisco LCD Adapter is still disabled in the device manager. I also noticed he power button wasn’t lighting up, though I dont remember if that happened before I attempted to repair this thing or not.
Everything else was working, but while attempting to type this up first the mouse died while I was AFK and when I went into the control panel to try to see what was going on it gave me some .dll error about it not existing, so I power rebooted and all the synaptic touchpad stuff was completely gone and just generic mouse controller stuff was in its place and it wouldn’t detect new hardware or see the mouse in any way shape or form. So I attempted to type this up again and right in the middle of doing so there was a sudden pop and whine and the whole laptop just powered off and on the front display the power cord icon started blinking yellow slowly. Only popping the battery out stopped it from doing so, and it wouldn’t power on again for love or money. This just occured. I have a feeling I have completely fried my laptop now and only hope the hard drive survived which you are of course going to tell me is dead.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
The code being blinked apparently is 10100010 which I can’t find on google anywhere as all links that refer to it seem to have gone the way of the dodo.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Ok, found a link for it finally that seems to say I now need a new motherboard. How the heck did I frag the motherboard?
the error is binary with least significant bit first which means you reverse it and convert it to hex which gives me 45h which is:
S3V voltage is not more than 3.14V when the computer is supports CV and is booting up
The link with all the Toshiba blinking error codes is here for future reference for folks:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/51345/
scroll down past the first post as all those links are now blocked (gee thanks for sharing Toshiba).
April 15th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Apparently one of the capacitors has blown up. If you remove the motherboard, you’ll see the damaged capacitor.
When the power LED starts blinking yellow, most likely there is a problem with the motherboard. Even if you find a reference for that code, it will not help a lot. You’ll have to replace the motherboard.
Sometimes they just die like people. One day it works fine and on the next morning it’s dead.
April 15th, 2009 at 10:40 am
del,
1. Uninstall the CD/DVD drive from the device manager, restart the laptop and let it to detect the drive again and install the driver. It might help.
2. If the CD/DVD drive disappeared from My Computer try this solution from Microsoft. Remove UpperFilters and LowerFilters from the registry and restart the laptop.
April 20th, 2009 at 9:14 am
SO does anyone know how to replace the CPU cooler fan on this machine? I got the thing to boot using a different DVD drive… then it just shut off mid rebuild…
April 20th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Brian,
Are you sure the fan is bad and has to be replaced. Does it start at all? Maybe it’s just clogged with dust. Have you tried cleaning the fan with compressed air?

my Satellite A105-S4074 DVD/CD drive recently failed, and I would like to upgrade (since i bought this computer more than 5 years ago). The drive is a Pioneer 000V01005. I don’t know much about computer parts. What should i consider with respect to physical compatibility when upgrading? Do you have any suggestions that may help for purchasing a new drive? thanks!
