Toshiba Satellite A20 and A25. How to remove keyboard and upgrade memory modules.
Removing and replacing memory on a Toshiba Satellite A20 or A25 notebook is not as easy ad it should be. Both memory modules are located under the keyboard. A laptop keyboard has to be replaced in order to get access to the memory modules. Before you remove the keyboard do not forget to remove the laptop battery or you can damage the laptop. Be careful when you remove the keyboard securing strip; do not bend it too much. To remove the memory module from the slot on the system board, release the latches on both sides and the memory module will pop up. It will stay at a 30 degree angle to the system board. Firmly grasp the memory module and remove it from the slot.

Thank you for these instructions – I followed them to add some memory and it was clear and easy. However, I also tried to replace my keyboard while I was in there, and broke the little plastic tab that holds the keyboard tape in place. I saw on some other thread that there’s no spare parts for that – do you kno w if that’s true, and/or does anyone know of a way to work around it? Many thanks for any help.

Can you please tell me how to replace the small fan on the side of the notebook used to cool the CPU and memory on my A25-S279? Thank you in advance for your help.

Your instructions were very helpful in replacing my keyboard. I was perplexed at how to actually remove the strip that connects the keyboard to the laptop (it just unplugs). Spent awhile figuring that part out but thanks a ton.

Hello,
I have a Satelite A25-S2792 laptop and my space bar is broken and the plastic pieces needed are what is actually broke. I need to either replace the entire keyboard or just that one key with the plastic parts that go under the space bar. I’d prefer to just change the entire keyboard but don’t know where to buy this. Any help would be appreciated. I am deparate and need to fix this yesterday…I use this laptop for my work.
Thanks for any help.

Jason,
By the way, if the computer showing only 480MB of RAM it means you have 512MB installed and 32MB is used for the video. That’s why you see only 480MB in the system properties. If you look in the BIOS you’ll see all 512MB.

Jason,
It’s possible that your new 512MB module was mislabeled and it’s actually a 256MB module. Just a guess.
What if you remove the first 256MB module and start the laptop only with the 512MB module? How it’s recognized in the BIOS? How it’s recognized in Windows properties?

I did that. My computer is only showing 480MB of Ram? Any ideas/suggestions on what to do for getting my laptop to recognize them? Thanks for answering so quickly. This is great.

Jason,
Yes, you can do that.

Jim,
Apparently, your new DVD-RW/CDRW is configured differently than the original DVD-CD/RW.

Peter,
You can clear the BIOS password from older Toshiba laptops using this method: How to remove BIOS password from Toshiba laptops.
1. You make the parallel port plug as it explained in the article.
2. You start the laptop with the plug installed.
3. The laptop will boot straight to Windows.
4. Unplug the plug.

Peter,
I doubt that you can uninstall Vista and revert the laptop back to XP.
You’ll have to reimage the hard drive from the recovery disc and start from scratch. Before you do that, make sure to back up all personal data because running the restore will erase everything from the hard drive.
1. Insert the recovery disc into the laptop.
2. Restart the laptop and press “C” when Toshiba logo appears to start from the CD-Rom.
3. Follow instructions on the screen and reimage the drive back to factory defaults (Windows XP).

Hi
I’ve got a Toshiba A25-207 “USA model”
I’ve so far replaced a bad LCD,
Upgraded the Memory to 1024 meg.
Wanted to Upgrade the DVD-CDRW to a DVD-RW/CDRW
So I picked up a LG Super multi DVD Rewriter
Model GSA-T40N
I checked the Toshiba home Site and the a25-307 is just the same as the a25-207 except it has a DVD-RW/CDRW
So thought this LG would work. But it does not.
When it boots it says Eror #1 drive.
Do I need to upgrade the BIO’s or did they send me a bad DVD-RW ? or Will this drive not work for this model?
Thanks for all the info.
Jim

I just replaced the RAM in my Satellite A20 and you do not need to wreck, or replace the keyboard. It simply folds over to provide access to the RAM slots.

This is a great site with loads of advise for novice and experts alike. I have a satellite A20 that’s about 4 years old. The hdd crashed last year and i replaced it with a 80GB Fujitsu HDD. It started running like a new computer but it has one big flaw. The audio doesn’t work. The speakers had been working fine before I replaced the HDD though. It certainly wasn’t a software problem since all te audio setting looks normal, so I tried hooking external speakers and voila! it works. Albeit only with the external speakers. Now, I’ve been letting my 4-year to play educational games like pre-school Disney and Sesame Street and stuff. She must’ve hit the click button on the touchpad far too vigorously or forcefully while she was at it. Now it appears like the touch-pad’s left click button is jammed. I realized this while trying to reformat and run the recovery CDs. The option for language and region selection keeps rolling as if the scoll-down button is being pressed. It stops momentarily if I click elsewhere on the desktop but resumes rolling the moment I attempt to select the region or language. Of course I am not realy certain that it is the left-click button but I’m assuming it must be the culprit since my kid couldn’t have been using any other keys on the keyboard more often than the left-click button. I tried removing the bottom and look for a solution but found that I couldn’t reach the touch-pad. The computer is working fine otherwise. Can you please offer any help? Thank you very much.

Thanks for the reply about the memory compatibility.
I am wondering if anyone might know why our laptop fan runs high quite a bit? Do you think the fan needs replacing or the CPU is getting too hot? Or could the laptop be on it’s way out or just need more memory?
Thanks!
