Removing and replacing memory on a Toshiba Satellite A20 or A25 notebook is not as easy ad it should be. Both memory modules are located under the keyboard. A laptop keyboard has to be replaced in order to get access to the memory modules. Before you remove the keyboard do not forget to remove the laptop battery or you can damage the laptop. Be careful when you remove the keyboard securing strip; do not bend it too much. To remove the memory module from the slot on the system board, release the latches on both sides and the memory module will pop up. It will stay at a 30 degree angle to the system board. Firmly grasp the memory module and remove it from the slot.

I’d like to start with thanks for the info on the TE 2100. I do have to inquire into whether or not it is possible to use a different type of video board in the TE2100 other than the originally installed board. The original is dead and I am finding quite a challenge to actually find a replacement. The other issue with the original is that it is a tad bit limmitted being a 16MB card.

Hi,
I had searched high and low for removal of keyboard. Your site is a like a godsent gift. Although I have not been able to do what I was looking for, your site has given me a new perspective. Thank you.
Please keep up the good work.

Dane,
Usually the key for accessing the BIOS (Setup) is written under the Toshiba logo on startup.
Satellite A20/A25 laptop should support up to 1GB total, so shouldn’t experience any problems. Check if both memory modules are installed correctly and seated properly. Try to install them one by one in the slot 1 and then in the slot 2. Start the laptop after each step and see if both memory modules work fine. I believe you have to press Esc or F1 when Toshiba logo flashes on startup to get into the BIOS, do not remember exactly because all models are different (may be F2).

Hi,
I’m desperately searching for information on how to upgrade the video card on the Toshiba A20/A25. Is this possible? I suuuure hope so - Great system except the video card stinks…
Thanks!
July 14th, 2006 at 7:59 am
Andrew,
This model comes with onboard video. The video card is not a separate module, it’s a part of the system board. You cannot upgrade the video card on Toshiba Satellite A20/A25.

Hi,
I’m from Brazil and i have a toshiba a25-s207 that has both hinges broken. I’ve looked everywhere here in Brazil and i couldn’t find them to buy. Where can i buy those, along with the speaker covers?
September 6th, 2006 at 4:33 pm
I have a broken left hinge I have searched the internet and prices for the one hinge vary from $75 - $170 USA. This site seems to have the best price I don’t know how reliable they are yet.
With the instructions from this excellent site. I am going to strip my laptop and check to see exactly what part I need then await delivery and then reassemble.

I have a Toshiba A25 notebook that has two memory module. I want to replace one of them that has been confirmed bad, How do I know if it is SD or DD type. I am new in this hardware stuff. Kindly assist.
September 20th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
Solomon,
You can get the information you need from the bad memory stick, most likely it would say PC2100 (I found that this model uses PC2100 in the laptop specification), it’s DDR memory. For this model you can install 128MB/256MB or 512MB memory stick in one memory slot. This model support up to 1GB (slot A + slot B).
You can also remove the bad memory stick and take it to a computer store, a salesmen should be able to find a compatible memory for you.

I have Toshiba A25 Satellite and it overheats and shuts down i had this prob and the service center fixed it for me they showed me there was some dirt in front of my processor thats why it gets overheat so wondering how can i disassemble the processor parts and also how shuld i clean the dirt in front of the processor please try to display the pictures it will be a great help thanks!!!
September 22nd, 2006 at 8:39 pm
Ahsan,
Take a look at this disassembly guide, it should guide you. Step 4 shows how remove the heatsink and the fan. After you remove the cover, you can clean the heatsink with compressed air and it’s not necessary to remove the heatsink unless you want to replace the thermal grease on the CPU.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:45 pm
can the HD be replaced on this model? Thanks,! great site
September 30th, 2006 at 2:33 pm
Stopm,
The hard drive could be replaced on any laptop. Toshiba Satellite A20 and A25 hard drive location is pictured on this disassembly guide, look at the step 3.

thank you thank you thank you.
You see my reading module was obviously in need of re-binding…I saw the fan in the picture and said - oh fan removal….
ok this addresses my issue precisely.
Follow up - would you knoe the max hd that can be put into this system? GB size, RPM, Bus?
October 3rd, 2006 at 2:03 pm
Stomp,
Satellite A25 comes from Toshiba with 30, 40, 60 or 80 GB hard drive. Some hard drives are 4200RPM some are 5400RPM. So, I would say that you can install 100 or 120GB hard drive, 5400RPM or even 7200RPM, you shouldn’t have any heat related issues.
October 4th, 2006 at 4:22 am
Hi,
My A25 has 512MB RAM. I want to upgrade it to 1GB. Do I have to put another 512MB card? It seems that it already has the 2 slots used. How can I proceed?
Thank’s
October 6th, 2006 at 3:30 pm
Fred,
If both slots are used, then you already have two 256MB memory modules installed. To extend the memory size to 1GB, you’ll have to remove both 256MB modules and install two 512MB memory modules instead. That’s the only way to extend it to 1GB.
October 23rd, 2006 at 3:26 pm
Thank you CJ,
It worked! I replaced both modules and now it has 1GB (and I have 512MB useless
). Now I have another question, is it possible to replace the speakers in this model? What about the CDROM driver? I would like to replace it with a DVD RW combo.
Thank’s again, this site is a oasis.
October 23rd, 2006 at 10:33 pm
Fred,
I don’t think that you can upgrade speakers.
Non knowing the full model name and part number for your laptop I just checked if there is a DVD burner listed for Satellite A25-S207 and I found two of them. Most likely they will work for all Satellite A25 flavours.
Here are part numbers for these DVD burners: P000366780 and P000369850
You can find them if you search on Google by the part number. Before you buy the drive call to the seller and confirm that it will work with your laptop.

I have a Satellite A25 S3072 computer. A few months ago, I installed the WindowsX theme 4.0 (Vista package), then when I inserted the Recovery DVD, the DVD told me that I was using it on the wrong computer, it’s not A25 computer!! I tried many ways but it still said that this computer is not A25, so I can’t use the DVD. I think replacing the COMS battery is efficient method but I dont know how to do. Please tell me is it a good way to get my A25 back to normal? If so, please help me to remove the CMOS battery.
Thanks for any help.
November 16th, 2006 at 11:06 pm
SM,
Here’s a guide for removing and replacing broken hinges in a Satellite A20 laptop. You can use the guide, it should be the same as for Satellite A25.
November 16th, 2006 at 11:15 pm
Giang,
Do you get a “Wrong Machine” message when you try using the recovery DVD? If yes, then you laptop has an incorrect DMI string. The DMI string has a name of your laptop model (for example: Satellite A25) and if this name is entered incorrectly or it’s missing, you’ll get a “Wrong Machine” message when you try to run a restore. The name of the laptop model on the recovery DVD must match the name entered in the DMI string.
I believe you can download the DMI update utility from Toshiba website. Read instructions before you use it. After you correct the DMI string, you’ll be able to run the recovery DVD.
November 17th, 2006 at 8:23 am
Thank you so much!!, CJ2600. I found the DMI update from the Toshiba site. Now I’m burning the boot disc to retore my DMI. You’re a genius, my hero!! Thanks again!

I have a Toshiba P15-S470 laptop. My CD-R/DVD-R combo drive is in the fritz. Can I replace it with any CD-R/DVD+/-R/RW combo drive higher than 8x? If so, with which one? Do you have any instructions on removing the CD-R/DVD combo drive on the this laptop?
Thank you.
December 11th, 2006 at 9:36 am
Great work- thanks for the help here!
I’ve seen several references to the A25 series supporting 2GB of RAM but haven’t been able to confirm this. The manual states 1GB maximum (which I have installed) but it would be great if in fact the system could take advantage of more.
Thanks again,

Need to replace the HD on a Toshiba A25-S207. Can I use an an ATA-6 HD or do I have to stick with an ATA-5 (factory) one. I’m not sure what the Motherboard can support. I’d like to move from the 4,200rpm to a 7,200 rpm drive if possible.
Any input would be appreciated.

Yesterday I poured about 4oz of fine California Chardonnay into the upper right hand corner of my Toshiba A20 Satellite. It made a pooofff and went dead at once. I removed the battery and turned the machine upside down for ~12 hours. When I re-inserted the battery it was just as dead but it now flashed a a three segment code with the green battery symbol and the yellow wall-plug symbol: short, short, long, -pause- short, short, long, -pause- short, short. Then it repeats itself. Another 12 hours later the machine now responds to the start button, and seems to go through some kind of boot cycle, though the screen is dead. I am very much interested in resurrecting this machine, she has been flawless for 3+ years. Is this enough information for a resurrection proposal?
Tx Chris.
P.s. I am kinda handy and would be willing to pay for instructions for repair if your experience would indicate that the repair procedure is a rather ’simple’ act…

My A25-S3072 laptop has green pixels where black pixels should be, so in other words when the Windows XP splash screen comes up during bootup the screen is completely green except for the logo of course. Every “true black” pixel is green colored and the problem is there when Windows is running too. I can see they are not dead pixels because all the pixels do it when a black pixel should be there. I had a friend who is a Toshiba certified technician take a look at it and he said it looks like coffee was spilled on it but the LCD is fine so it seems to be something with the onboard video. I am great with making and repairing desktops, but not laptops, though I could if I needed to. Can anyone suggest anything besides getting a new laptop or a new motherboard. The MB sounds better than a whole new laptop.

I apologize if this has already been asked; I have the A25-S279 and want to upgrade RAM. I want to order the upgrade before taking it apart (which I’m VERY nervous about). Do I need to order (2) 512MB modules to fill the 2 slots, or is there a possibility that (1) 512MB is already in one with the other being empty (and I would just have to get 1 additional)? I’m not sure if anything is standard in the way these are put together.
Thanks!
January 1st, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Nancy,
I’ve checked the laptop specification and it says:
According to the description this model comes with two memory sticks installed (256MB+256MB). If you want to upgrade to 1GB, you’ll have to buy two 512MB modules.
I would recommend looking under the keyboard before you order new RAM, just to make sure that both slots are occupied. Just in case.
January 11th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Hi, besides the laptop specification sent to Nancy, there was this specification:
Expansion memory: 128MB/256MB/512/1024MB PC2100 DDR,
SODIMM, 2.5V
What this mean? A25 could be upgraded to 2Gb of RAM? or you can choose what kind of memory you add? i have an A25-S207 model with 512 as the specification above said.
Can I add an “expansion memory” without removing actual memory?
I do not understand.
Thanks!!

Can I upgrade this laptop to a mobile Prescott 1MB L2 533fsb? Or do I have to stick with 512KB L2 CPU’s like what it has now?
February 7th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
My RJ-45 Ethernet connector has a bent #1 pin. Anyone replaced that connector before. A computer techician told me that this may include the entire assembly of the USB and RJ-45. The only problem I see is that the factory RJ-45 has the green and orange LED’s for transmit and receive indication.
I guess what my question is… where can I get the replacement RJ-45 with LED’s or the module to fit my computer. Wireless networking is a drag in this building.

Hello. I upgraded my A20-S207 to Windows Vista, but only a generic video driver was installed, which is unusable (veeeery slow) for videos. Is there a compatible Vista video driver for this model?? Thanks!
April 23rd, 2007 at 8:05 am
FYI All that wish to upgrade,
I have a Tosh A25-S307. I have 2gig of RAM, a Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drive, with an 802.11 a/b/g. The machine also has 120gig of drive space and a 3.0ghz P4 processor. The only thing I found is the video memory cannot be upgraded.
April 24th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Looks like cj2600 is on vacation
Anyway, it seems my second memory module slot is corrupted, I ran memtest with ram chip 1 in the first slot and it passed, with chip 2 in the first slot and it passed, but if i put them both in at the same time it always fails at 516mb or above, and in windows i get the lovely 0×0000008E error. I’ve blown out the area heavily with canned air but no luck…
SO I’m wondering if 1GB can be put into one slot.. I have the S306, but given Eric’s success I think I’ll try it!

My Toshiba Satellite is about 3 yrs old - no problems until a week ago when the screen start shaking and then went really dark. With a little research on the web, I thought it was the inverter. I ordered a brand new FL Inverter & replaced it tonight. I was very careful to make sure all connections were clean & tight. After re-assembling, my screen is still dark. Please Help! Is their a bulb I need to replace? If so, where (how) do I find it?
Thanks in advance for help!
May 7th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Rory,
First of all make sure the lid close switch is not stuck inside the case. When it gets stuck it cuts off power from the backlight lamp and it stops working.
If a new inverter board didn’t fix the problem then probably something is wrong with the backlight lamp. Here you’ll find an example for replacing the backlight bulb.
May 16th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
“First of all make sure the lid close switch is not stuck inside the case” I don’t quite understand what your referring to.. can u help me out? lol
I am having the same problem. intermitent shaking. a majority of the time it will be just fine. it also starts with a red hue, but slowly fades away.
Has anyone tried replacing the bulb? and where do i get one?

I already bought the power jack, but need directions.
I only get to the part where you remove the keyboard…

I am considering the Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757. It sounds fantastic but I have read some really bad things about Toshiba’s service. Please give me feedback as you really know Toshiba. Read about “hot pixels” spots on the screen that bother the consumer but toshiba says it’s not bad enough to be fixed under the warranty
Thanks,
squir
July 10th, 2007 at 6:25 pm
squir,
I’ve never served this model and never seen it in our shop, apparently it’s a new laptop (or not a USA model).
Here’s my advice for you. Whatever you buy, Toshiba, HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc… , do not forget to buy an extended warranty for your laptop. It will pay off. Laptops break and it’s very expensive to fix them out of warranty.
I’m a laptop repair tech and I know how to fix laptops, but I always buy extended warranty for my personal computers and I will in the future.

On the memory upgrade site it says “A laptop keyboard has to be replaced in order to get access to the memory modules” can I not just use the original key board?
Just want to make sure before I try and up grade.
Do I need an ESD wrist band for this? if so where can you get one? thank you very much.
Ken
August 8th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Ken,
You don’t have to replace the keyboard, just lift it up and place upside down on the palm rest. Now you can replace/upgrade the memory.
Probably you can upgrade the memory without using an ESD wrist strap, just do not touch anything on the system board and do not touch contacts on the memory module. You can handle the memory module by the edges without touching contacts.
It should be enough to prevent ESD. Just in case, touch any device with metal case before you go inside the laptop (for example a desktop computer case), it should discharge you.

Hi,
I’m trying to work on a Toshiba A25-S279 laptop with an axillary cooling fan that is going bad. How do I access this “second (Smaller) fan”? Through the top or do I need to remove the bottom? If the bottom, how do I proceed?
November 3rd, 2007 at 1:05 pm
John A. Dixon,
You cannot replace the secondary fan without removing the top cover. Take a look at the step 19 of this disassembly guide, you’ll see the secondary fan on this image and get the idea how to remove the top cover.

December 19th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
do you thing i can use 2gb memory for a25
December 19th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
Rany,
Toshiba specification for a Satellite A25 laptop says that you can install up to 1GB in both slots, it means not more then 512MB in each slot.
PC2100 DDR modules are standard for this model but also you can use PC2700 modules, it’s backward compatible with PC2100.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Hi, First of all i love your guides, Very helpfull.
I own a A20 (PSA20A-08WR8) and i am planning on upgrading the Hdd to somewhere around 100GB - 160GB.
My question is, what type of drive do i shop for in order to be compatible with the A20 ? (SATA, EIDE, IDE, ATA-6) ?
Probably looking at 2x 1GB memory modules at some stage too (manual says thats the maximum for my model).
Thanks, From Mark.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Asymill8R,
Not SATA, that’s for sure. SATA has different connector type.
I believe that this laptop comes with Enhanced IDE (ATA-5) hard drive, so most likely the laptop has ATA-5 controller with data transfer rate 100Mb/sec. If you install ATA-6 hard drive (133Mb/sec) it will not run faster then 100Mb/sec because of the controller limitations. ATA-6 is backward compatible to ATA-5 but in your case there is no need to install ATA-6. Instead of that find a new hard drive with large buffer (8-16MB cache). You definitely can install 120GB hard drive, I’ve done it myself. Not sure about 160GB, never tried one.
Are you sure that your laptop will support up to 2GB? I just went through specifications for a couple of Satellite A20/A25 laptops (USA models) and they will support only 1GB max. Maybe your laptop is different, just make sure it supports 2GB. If it does, go for it.
January 9th, 2008 at 3:54 am
Thanks for the super quick reply.
Both the user manuals i have (from recovery disk & Toshiba Australia site) say:
“Slots - 128, 256, 512 MB or 1 GB memory modules can be installed in the two memory slots for a maximum of 2 GB system memory.”
This was under “Features” in chapter 1.
Mine is a 3.06 GHz model and i live in (was purchased in) Australia.
I had a quick look at the user manual available from the Toshiba USA web site and it is alot different to the one available from the .AU site.
I hope this helps find some answers for some of the earlier posts. If i find the $$’s to do it i’ll let you know how i go.
Thanks again, From Mark.
January 29th, 2008 at 11:55 am
CJ, greate guide you’ve made. I was given a Toshiba A20-S207. It appears that one of the hinges or both were broken. So I opened it up, and it looks like one is clearly broken and maybe the other one too. In fact, on the right one, the thin ring joint is broken off, as well as the end of the rod which runs through the back and connects to both hinges. Is that even replaceable? Also, whenever I google this laptop, there always seems to be a problem with the hinges. Are the hinges even worth replacing, given their high cost? Sound very flimsy. I’d hate to spend over $100 on hinges and have them break 2 months later.
My other question is in regards to the large main fan on the bottom. Is it normal for the fan to come on for a couple seconds and go back off?
Last one is the speed with which the system runs. This one is XP Pro, 512MB ram, P4/2.66 of course, and it runs like a dog. My 7 year old Athlon 850mhz runs 3 times as fast. I have defragged, taken out spyware, the whole nine yards. All aside from reformatting the system (I don’t have the Toshiba recovery disc). Is this just a slow system? It takes 10 seconds to open a program, and the multi-tasking is horrible.
Thanks
January 31st, 2008 at 6:54 am
Hi Greg,
I’m having the same problem. I reformatted the drive, installed XP Home, installed all the drivers as I could and it still runs very slow for a 2.4 Ghz laptop. I have the latest BIOS (v1.4). Whats going on with this computer.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:44 am
Matt, I uninstalled everything imaginable. I also ran a free program called CCLeaner, which cleaned up the registry. That definitely helped the speed. You’re always going to be handcuffed by the Video though, as it is onboard and only 32MB. 512MB RAM therefore becomes only 480MB. Also, the native Hard drives for these Toshiba’s have only a 4200RPM disk. Other than the video, the specs on the machine were actually very good for 2003. My other thing now is deciding whether to spend close to $150 on the hinges and a battery (which is dead). I think I’ve got the unit working well enough to make it worth it. However, I am still very leery on the hinges and whether they just break too easily.

IS DDR2 PC 5700 IS BACKWARD COMPATIBLE TO the toshiba A20/A25 satellite laptop?
February 7th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Patty,
No, it’s not backward compatible. DDR2 memory module will not fit into DDR memory slot.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
One quick question,
what’s the battery called that the A25-S307 uses?
My battery is dead-lost beyond the grave and I don’t know which type to shop for. Help please?

Forgot to mention: I lost the previous battery, so I can’t just check the model of it or anything like that…

Thanks for the reply about the memory compatibility.
I am wondering if anyone might know why our laptop fan runs high quite a bit? Do you think the fan needs replacing or the CPU is getting too hot? Or could the laptop be on it’s way out or just need more memory?
Thanks!

This is a great site with loads of advise for novice and experts alike. I have a satellite A20 that’s about 4 years old. The hdd crashed last year and i replaced it with a 80GB Fujitsu HDD. It started running like a new computer but it has one big flaw. The audio doesn’t work. The speakers had been working fine before I replaced the HDD though. It certainly wasn’t a software problem since all te audio setting looks normal, so I tried hooking external speakers and voila! it works. Albeit only with the external speakers. Now, I’ve been letting my 4-year to play educational games like pre-school Disney and Sesame Street and stuff. She must’ve hit the click button on the touchpad far too vigorously or forcefully while she was at it. Now it appears like the touch-pad’s left click button is jammed. I realized this while trying to reformat and run the recovery CDs. The option for language and region selection keeps rolling as if the scoll-down button is being pressed. It stops momentarily if I click elsewhere on the desktop but resumes rolling the moment I attempt to select the region or language. Of course I am not realy certain that it is the left-click button but I’m assuming it must be the culprit since my kid couldn’t have been using any other keys on the keyboard more often than the left-click button. I tried removing the bottom and look for a solution but found that I couldn’t reach the touch-pad. The computer is working fine otherwise. Can you please offer any help? Thank you very much.

I just replaced the RAM in my Satellite A20 and you do not need to wreck, or replace the keyboard. It simply folds over to provide access to the RAM slots.
