Toshiba Satellite M45. Removing LCD screen and replacing FL inverter board

Toshiba Satellite M45. Removing LCD screen and replacing FL inverter.Toshiba Satellite M45 display disassembly guide will help you to remove the LCD screen and replace the FL inverter board. It is very easy to take the laptop display assembly apart, but you have to be careful. Never use screwdrivers to separate the LCD mask from the screen top cover! To remove the LCD screen mask use your finger. Put your fingers between the LCD mask and the screen and start separating the mask from the LCD screen cover. Sometimes, when the mask plastic latches are tight, I use a guitar pick to disengage them. I put the guitar pick between the mask and the top cover and slowly move it along the side. The screen mask is made of very thin plastic and you can easily break it if you not careful. After the mask is removed, everything is straight forward. In this model the video cable is glued to the LCD screen so you have to use some force to separate it from the screen. When you unplug the inverter board cables do not pull the wires. Use the connector edges to unplug it.

My Toshiba Satellite has no hard drive in it. Does this make the screen black? I plug it to a monitor and can see the bois.

My wifes M45-S2653 Left Monitor Hinge Separated, the tension from the pin was to much for the part that secured it to the body. Is there a way to adjust the tension? i am hoping i can find part number TC7010-L SZS as that is all that is needed to get this old beast into working order.

    Victor,

I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S331 and the screen is black if I shine a flashlight to the screen everything looks great no color drift or discoloration. I tried to replace the inverter but that was not the problem. Was thinking that the CCFL back light is bad.

    I think you are correct.
If replacing the inverter board didn’t help, most likely this is the backlight lamp failure. You’ll have to replace the LCD screen.

    Sergio,

I have an M45-S351 and the screen is kind of faint/diff colors at the sides.

There is also a white vertical line across the screen (this seems to be a problem with the connector, since pressing on top it changes color and even disappears).

Do you think I should replace the screen?

First of all, test your laptop with video on the external monitor. If external monitor works fine and the problem appears only on the laptop screen, most likely you have a problem with the screen and it has to be replaced.

    Paul,

I have a Toshiba M45 Satellite Laptop. It has worked well. I have a problem with it now. It went to Standy-by, but now will not turn back on. No Power.

This same problem occurred about 2 months ago. After it sit for a while w/o the battery, it came back up and worked well for until last week.

Do you have any idea what the problem could be? I took it to Tiger Direct and they told me it was the power supply or motherboard?

It’s hard to tell which one is failing.
I don’t think it’s related to the power supply because when it fails, it fails completely.

You said the laptop will not turn back on and there is no power? Are there any lights when you plug in the power adapter of the laptop appears to be completely dead?

Is there a CMIO’s Battery? If so, where is it located?

my toshiba M45-s165 screen went black(no display at all).

Is it really black? Take a closer look, maybe you can see a very dim image?

I connected an external monitor to the VGA port and is working fine.Help me.Is it the fault of “FL inverter” ?

When inverter fails, you still should be able to see a very faint image on the screen. Can you?
Yes, it’s possible to replace the inverter board. I linked to the disassembly guide in the post.

I have been using my Toshiba M45-S331 since year 2005, almost every single day. A few weeks ago my screen started turning slowly white and when this happens the screen freezes. The problem has become worse in recent days. I have managed to use the laptop by putting pressure on top of the monitor towards left by a paperclip. My suspicion is that the connections have become loose. Do you agree with me? How can I fix this problem?
    Thanks very much

    1. Check the memory. Run memory test. You can use Memtest86+.
    2. Check the hard drive. Run hard drive test. Download utility from the hard drive manufacturer’s website.

Is it completely black and blank or you still can see a very faint image when you look very closely?
If there is a faint image on the screen, most likely you have to replace the inverter board. I linked to the disassembly instructions in my post.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M45 that I acquired as a result of a class action suit 3+ years ago. Just before the warranty ran out the display started to cut out so I could not use the computer. The service people fixed it comenting that they resecured the display cable. A year later it acted up again and I was able to fix it myself thanks to your excellent web site. Thanks a bunch! I have one of my Toshiba M45-S169 hinges misaligned. It is on the side where the power cord plugs in. My screen flickers on and off,if I press the screen down it is ok sometimes,or I have to tilt the screen at different angles for the display to stop flickering.

What needs to be done? replace the hinges or could it be a wiring problem?

    Thanks in advance.

I have Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 that I am working on for a freind. I have replaced the entire LCD Screen and also added a new inverter. When the system boots up, I see nothing on the screen at the DOS level all the way through the initial Windows XP login. The screen display is extremely faint and the only way I can get it to fully light is to use the Fuction-F7 keys once the xp desktop is fully loaded. I’ve reloaded XP drivers, set BIOS defaults. Still the same behavior. I am at a loss. I need to return it to my friend, but It’s only 95% fixed. I hate to take it back him stating that he’ll have to hit Func-F5 everytime the system boots up. Espcially with the cost of the replacement LCD and the inverter. Any adivce would be appreciated.

As I’ve said before don’t assume things meaning laptops are similar in design but it’s the plastics that differentiate them apart from each other and to open one in the wrong place the wrong way will not allow it to snap together correctly causing you to buy a plastic part.
I will make life easy for you, click on this HP site and you will be able to look and download the manual for your laptop.

Check out these instructions, but it’s not easy. You can easily damage the screen while replacing the backlight lamp. Be careful.

    Thomas,
There is no special tool. You can open the locking tab with your fingernail.
Carefully lift one side of the brown locking tab up. When it’s opened it stays at a 90 degree angle.
