Toshiba Tecra 8100. How to remove and replace FL inverter board.

Toshiba Tecra 8100. How to remove and replace FL inverter board.Use Toshiba Tecra 8100 display disassembly guide to remove and replace the FL inverter board. If the backlight on your computer suddenly stopped working but you still can see a faint image, then most likely the problem is caused by a failed FL inverter board. Before you jump in and start buying hardware make sure to read through laptop video problem tips. Be very careful with the LCD screen mask. The plastic is very fragile and can be easily broken. Use only your finger when you remove the LCD mask. Do not use a screwdriver or any other sharp object because you can damage the screen.

You can use the same FL inverter board for 13″ screen and 14″ screen. Toshiba part number for the FL inverter: P000272240

Thanks for all the great tutorials. I was wondering if you could do a complete disassembly of a Tecra 8100? I need to find the RPC battery and it has elluded me.

    Thanks.

    Hey Jason,
I haven’t created a disassembly guide for this model yet. Here is a link to Toshiba Tecra 8000 FRU documentation. This .pdf file is 2.7MB, so if you have a slow connection it can take some time to open it. I hope this FRU documentation will help you to replace the RTC battery.

Is any chance to tighten them?

    Mike,
If the hinges are not broken, you can tighten them. What laptop model do you have? Check out my Toshiba laptop disassembly guides for your laptop model.

    cj2600, great guides!

Do you by any chance know the part numbers of the tecra 8100 display hinges? I need to replace a bit that holds the shaft of the hinge “from the LCD side”. It is a small rectangular bit (less than 1″x1″) in the LCD, and is clearly visible in the bottom-right corner of the LCD on your photo “remove-replace-FL-inverter-06.jpg”.

  10. 10
    cj2600 Says:

    Max,
On this model the hinge has 2 parts. One part is connected to the side of the LCD screen (part1). Second part is connected to the laptop base (part2). On the step 6 the part 1 is located above the part 2. The screw goes through part 1 into part 2.
I believe you are talking about part 2 – the hinge itself.

Toshiba Satellite 8100 with 14 inches screen. Part numbers for the right side:

Part 1 (screwed to the side of the LCD screen)
P000288940 for Toshiba, Sharp and Samsung displays
    P000300630 for Hitachi display
    P000303430 for Chimei display

    Part 2 (the hinge itself)
P000294150 or P000309040 for Toshiba, Sharp and Samsung displays
P000307010 or P000311310 for Hitachi or Chimei displays

    Max,
This information is not available publicly; at least I do not know any source to get it. You have to be a Toshiba certified technician to get an access to this info.

    cj2600 Says:

    TGonline,
You say nothing appears on the screen and then mention a blue screen. Is it BSOD- blue screen of death? Please give more details. Try to hook up an external monitor and turn on the laptop, see if you can get any video on the external monitor.

I guess it depends on the part you want to replace. If you give me more information about 8100 and 8200 laptops (model number) and tell me what part you want to use, I would check if these parts are interchangeable.

It seems alot of people are having problems with the hinges… I just acquired my Tecra 8100 for free, and the screen is kind of floppy… about 5 inches of play. It stays up but it’s kind of weak. Also, I can hear something rattling around. I assume it’s a broken hinge? I’ll remove the mask today to see. Great article.

    Miagi Says:

    Hello cj2600,

This is in reference to the hinges that you labeled as Part 2 in comment #10. I would like to please find out if there is a guide that shows how to take apart the base of a Toshiba Tecra 8100 or if you could describe it so I can replace those hinges (Part 2). Apparently, Part 2 can only be accessed either underneath the keyboard or from the bottom.

    Thank you very much.

  25. 25
    cj2600 Says:

    Miagi,
I don’t have a guide for this particular model. If you want to replace hinges, you’ll have to open up the laptop and remove the top cover. You can find my disassembly guides for other models here, in general they all share the same steps. Read through a few guides and you’ll see how to remove the top cover from your laptop.

Thank you very much buddy… for this very very very helpful guide. I disconnected my FL inverter and reconnected it and it is working fine now. Earlier, I used to experience screen black-outs very very frequently. But now there are none. I don’t know what will happen in future, but as of now, (I have been testing my LCD on Toshiba Tecra 8100 since two days, and there is not even one instance of screen black-out till now. Thank you for a great tutorial.

Thank you. Fl inverter tube was removed, sprayed with anti oxidant spray, then re connected. Works wonderfully! Thank you!

I would like to note there is alot of heat from the Fl inverter and would like to make vent holes and possibly add a heat sink for as a DIY project.

I also plan to clean dust, dissasemble, and upgrade cooling.

    More information would be great.

Hi! This is a great site. I used your guide from the 8200 to begin dismantling my 8100. Thanx.

I have trouble finding info on my problem: could you push me in the right direction?

I replaced my 5gb hd to a 40gb hd (temporarily without screws) and all worked well (I cloned it). But I pulled out the drive (actually when it was still shutting down, possibly) and reinstalled it with screws. Now, no boot…no screen, no post, not even a fan spins. The hd lite comes on for a few seconds, barely active (red & green?), then amber lite.

This sounds textbook mistake…but what is broken? MB? Reset MB?

    any help is welcomed. Thanx.

Just Google for P000272240. Note the all “O” in the part number are actually “0″ (zeros). :) I guess that’s why you cannot find it.

    Paulo Says:

Thank you. I have successfully replaced the FL inverter board by following your instructions. However, something odd is happening: the new board fails (the backlighting switches off repeatedly, as before) if I put the screen mask back on. I have checked the old inverter, which fails either with the mask on or off.
I think this must be a matter of temperature or pressure exerted by the mask on the board, but this didn’t happen before. Any suggestions?

  39. 39
    Erica Says:

Thanks for the instructions. They were very useful!
Two other things that inexperienced DIY-ers might want to know:
    1) Note the tabs that hold the screen mask in place. (Can sort of see these on the “remove screen mask” photo.) Pushing or prying in these areas with a thumbnail can help pop the screen mask off. (From the outside, not the screen side!)

    2) Note places where wires, etc. can cover tabs when re-installing inverter. Carefully tuck the inverter back in underneath its plastic cover.
Our inverter had been replaced before without attention to these tabs, making it difficult to get the screen mask off again without damaging it. There are pinch points near the hinges, specifically.

Has anyone succeeded in improving the cooling? One comment suggested drilling holes or cleaning things… did it work?

    Thanks,
    Erica

    Paul Lee Says:

I bought a Tecra 8100 with the same problem: screen turned faint frequently after 5 min. However, I did not change the inverter. From a web, I got an information that you just need to pull out and plug in the power connector to the inverter for five times. It is quite unbelievable but I tried and it worked like a charm. Five months have passed the computer has worked perfectly.

    Mike C Says:

Excellent instruction and guidance – thanks! Your info quickly solved 2 frustrating problems with my wife’s Tecra 8100 (intermittent LCD backlight and a loose lid), thereby postponing the cost of a replacement and restoring marital harmony!

But 1 issue remains. When returning from standby, a “resume failure” error frequently (but not always) occurs, forcing a system reboot. Any ideas of what’s going on here? Marginal RAM maybe? BTW, battery condition is fine. I ended up disabling standby and forcing hibernation instead, but it’s not ideal.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Mike C.

    Now regarding your problem.
There is no simple answer but I would definitely run diagnostic tests on memory and hard drive.
For testing memory you can use Memtest86+.
For testing the hard drive you can use Hitachi’s drive fitness test.
I linked to both utilities in “Useful Links” on the right side of the website.
Also, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed. Update the BIOS if needed.

I have a problem with my Tecra 8200 where the AC adaptor LED (left most LED) is flashing amber. I suspect a problem with the internal PSU but I cannot get access to it. Does anyone know how I could dismantle this machine further to gain access to this?
    Thanks very much in advance,

    Chris Says:

One was thrown out at work and I grabbed it.

It works somewhat, but I think it was dropped. Sometimes it freezes up during startup then goes to blue screen and says stop: 0×0000007f then the rest 0x… are zeros (which means hardware failure somewhere). Anyways I loaded knoppix (live CD) and ran the memtest right from prompt and it seems to run fine until I push near/around the top left of the keyboard (I think right above the processor) and then the memtest starts continuously listing off errors as it runs the test until I push in that area again, but it’s intermittant and mostly gives errors. Couple of times I did manage to get knoppix fully loaded but as soon as I tapped that left corner the screen blanked and it froze up.

Anyways, how do I take it apart so I can look to see if the processor is seated properly. I can’t seem to crack the cases in half. I’ve removed screws, hd, battery, modem, dvd drive as shown in the toshiba 8100 field service manual but it doesn’t give any direction on how to split the two halves to, say, change a processor. I’m kinda stuck.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. Maybe the best tip is to just get rid of it but I would hope someone would have some type of skill to help me out.

Again, greatly appreciated if anyone could.

    Grateful for any tips

I fixed the memory problem on my Tecra 8100 it was 6 pins in slot B that solder had come loose 3 pins on both of the outside.

Other problem is AC power. I have to put pressure on the cord for AC power to work. I resoldered but no success. I may try again later.

As for your screen going blank, I’m not to sure. Usually it’s the inverter board other times its the lights. I’m trying to fix an LCD monitor thrown out at work and the invertor section of the board is gone. Couple of diodes blown and some failing capacitors and transistors. I know which ones, all I need is to find the time and the parts to do it. Best of luck! I’ll see if I can come up with something.
