If you experience a problem with video output on your Toshiba Satellite 5105 you can use this disassembly guide for removing and replacing the video (VGA) board. First of all, make sure that the video problem is caused by the video board. Connect the laptop to an external monitor and turn it on. If you see the same corrupted, garbaged video output on the LCD screen and on the external monitor, then most likely the problem is caused by the VGA board. Before you replace the video board, try to fix the problem by reseating it. Disconnect the video board from the system board and put it back in place, make sure that it makes a good connection with the system board. If after reseating the VGA board the video problem still occurs then next step would be replacing the video board.
You can also use this guide if you want to remove and replaced memory modules, modem board, keyboard, DVD/CD-ROM drive, top cover and LCD screen assemblies.

Thank you for the excellent instructions.
Regarding the Satellite 5105-S702, I would like send the Video Card and the Motherborad for repair.
Can you provide the additional steps for removing the Motherboard ?

Hey Alan,
I haven’t created these instructions yet. I think if somebody wants to repair the motherboard and the video card, they need the entire laptop so they can test if it works after repair.
June 20th, 2006 at 2:32 am
Don’t think it would be practical for me to send the whole laptop for repair(12,000 miles). So next best thing is to send the video card & motherboard. He says that he will be able to test them.
How many extra steps would be involved ?
Thanks
Alan

Not a lot. The video card removal guide will help you to take apart most of the laptop. After that all other disassembly steps should be obvious. Just make some notes, so you can assemble it after you get the fixed parts back. You can make some photos.

After step 12 and trying to lift off the cover I found their was still a black and white wire still connected to the right of the two small connectors with the red black and blue black wires (upper right hole looking at the picture for step 12. I did not find it unplugged with any easy and afraid to jerk I left it connected as all I wanted to do was replace the DC power jack.

The numbers next to the screw holes indicate the length of the screws (in millimetres), and the type of screw.
For example, F6 is a 6mm flat-head screw. I presume a “B” marking is for ball, although I would think pan head.
Nice write-up, btw

Hi cj2600,
I have a Toshiba 1405-S151 satellite laptop. The LCD screen suddenly blacked out, you can faintly see the desktop. I plugged it into a desktop monitor and still had no display? Does this sound like video card problem?
If so, is it easy to replace and worth while for a 6 year old unit. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
Regards,
Darrell

i have a toshiba satellite 5105 and its been turning off by itself lately…and it couple of days ago it turned off by itself and wouldn’t turn back on even after several days.
so after reading other posts where people said they were having a similar problem with their toshiba laptop, i read that the problem is probably a clogged heatsink…which i can solve by disassembling the laptopn (and thankfully your website has provided a disassembly guide for my laptop)…but i have a problem…one of the nails i need to remove to access the heatsink has a damaged head…meaning i can’t just use a regular screwdriver to unscrew it…..(the damage resulted as a combo of someone who fixed messing with the nail and me trying to still unscrew the nail after that happened which was, for the the record, a very bad idea)…so how do i fix the screw head so that i can take it out?

Nice instructions. Now, how do I find the parts list and #’s? Who carries these items, specifically the motherboard and VGA card for the Satellite 5105-S501? I need the correct parts as your dissembly instructions are so explicit, I can do this. Thanks, John

John Eberhart,
Check out these guys, they sell part and have a full list of parts for Toshiba, HP, Compaq, IBM, Sony laptops.

Dahlia,
I don’t think this problem is related to a clogged heatsink (overheating). Even with 100% clogged heatsink the laptop will start and run at least for a while, until the CPU is too hot. I think you’re having another issue, it’s not just overheating.
Try reseating the memory modules. If you have 2 memory sticks installed, remove them one by one and test the laptop just with one module installed.
You can clean the heatsink with compressed air. Find an air compressor or buy a can of compressed air and blow off the heatsink.

thank you cj2600…i will try to remove the memory….does that require opening up the computer though? if it does…how can i open up the computer and remove the damaged nail i mentioned in the previous post?
because the damaged nail is one of the nails required to open up the computer (its the top right nail above the keyboard)…i’m wondering if there’s a way to remove the nail or access my computer from the bottom (where all the serials are)….
any advice you could give me would be very helpful…
January 2nd, 2007 at 5:13 pm
update: so i just reviewed your dissembly guide which says i can access the memory cards from the bottom (so i don’t have to worry about the damaged screw that is securing the keyboard in the top portion of the laptop)… so my new question is…if the memory stick(s) don’t work after I reset them…do they need to be replaced?
and with that damaged screw securing the keyboard (and preventing me from directly being able to see the heatsink) would it be “good enough” to just use the compressed air around what I can access from the bottom of the computer? and how do i get that screw out….?

Hello,
I am having trouble with my Internet explorer. It is doing some very odd things.Sometimes it will completely close the page i am visiting for no reason or it will be very slow loading pages and when i say slow i mean very very very slow for eg i tried to google something and after 10 minutes of the page trying to load i gave up.I thought that it was perhaps the topic i was searching so i tried putting in random things to see if that made any difference but it didn’t.Another problem i had was when i was on a forum and clicked on a link and nothing happened i tried to open a new tab and that wouldn’t work either and it would let me access any options that are in my tools menu.i had to restart my computer.Just to let you know i have high speed Internet connection. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps me with this problem.

Recently used your instructions to aide in changing hinges and replacing touch pad on my 5105-s701, worked great.
However just before I took it apart I made a backup disk of some important documents (just in case). My screen had a small vertical line in green about center of display, I sort of blew it off as a fluke. I took it apart, made the repairs and the green line was still visable. Could my screen be going bad? or am I missing something?

hi ! i need to upgrade the video RAM, which according to toshiba is external in satellite 5105-s501. can you please help me locate it.
Thanks

i have one of these tosh 5105-s701’s and i haven’t ever really had any issues since i got it. but now, i am running vista and i get a vista score of 1.0 because of the video Geforce 440. i got the Omega drivers installed and that helps run programs otherwise unrunable. but after looking at your “how too pull apart your toshiba page” i saw the vidoe card isn’t intergrated into the mother board like i was led to beleive. How can i upgrade the video card or change the video card out right for one that doesn’t have all the handicaps that this one has?
thanks a bunch.

Had the 5105-s701 since Oct 2002. Worked pretty well until this week — video card now showing artifacts on screen after a couple minutes of use. Eventually goes to VGA mode, blue-screens, then after a bit of use even the BIOS and XP loading screens have artifacts (Dammit.)…
Doesn’t look like its very practical to replace the video board at this point as it cannot really be found online anymore. Anyone have suggestions what to do w/ this bad boy because it is not a horrible device. There any frankenstein-ian methods of resurrection to suggest? Or alternate video boards that would work even if this thing wasn’t able to be fit into its original casing? Its pretty much a Folding@Home+Downloading CPU now that I mostly interface via Ultr@VNC.

I need to locate a video card for Toshiba Satellite 5105-s505 I believe. Its a Toshiba card with the NVIDIA gforce 4 440 Go. Do you have one and how much? Thanks for your time. Daniel

Where is the quickest place to get replacement parts? I am sure I need a new video card for my Toshiba Satellite 5105-s501. I am in the Southern California Area.

TOSHIBA 5105-s607 Model PS510U-00NU7X. Have vertical lines in display. Outputted to external monitor. Same result. Pulled beast apart and video board in hand. Where can I get one? Have found none online.
Thanks for the great pictorial dis-assembly essay. Works well. First time have had to pull a notebook apart in the dark…lol
Thanks

I have a 5105-s501 that started shutting itself down after a hard drive replacement. The shutdowns seem to be coming mor frequent. What seems to be different about mine from other posts is that although the laptop is plugged in everytime it shuts itself down the battery indicator light shows as low battery. Does this still sound like a clogged heatsink? The pc will restart usually but has shown as a serious system error if I try to restart it too soon.

Hi, so does this mean that you could get a faster video card designed for a satellite and install it? because i was trying to play oblivion on my laptop but the video is nowhere near good enough

Hello folks, where i can buy the video card (GeForce4 440 Go) for 5105-S607 Toshiba notebook? I have the sane erros but i can’t fix anymore.

Hi there:
Thanks for posting these instructions. These helped me big time in fixing (hopefully) my video car issue. I have assembled my laptop back and it look OK except for one thing….somehow, I ended up swaping my “Power” and “Internet Browser (IE)” buttons on the keyboard securing strip. I have to push internet button for power and power for IE. Which connector I might have swaped (there were no obvious ones though). I will appreciate any help.
Thanks

Problem in Toshiba Laptop DynaBook G5/X16 PME (I believe this model is Satelite series: 5105-5501).
Vertical lines in display with 1400 by 1050 pixels and 16 bit. However, 1024 by 768 pixcel with 32 bit has no vertical lines but 1.5 inch surrounded LCD screen is black. I think the problem is in graph card/video card.
Its a Toshiba card with the NVIDIA gforce 4 440 Go. Is it possible to change the video card without changing the motherboard? I will appreciate if someone provides me the info regarding the replacement procedure, and where can I find out the right one.
Thanks
Partha

Part number for VGA board with 64MB memory: P000349220
I just googled for the part number and found that this VGA board is really expensive.

I am a long time owner of a 5105-S607. For the most part, it has been a phenominal laptop, with its included media card reader, GeForce 440 Go and beautiful screen, not to mention the cool cPad.
I am going to be trying to upgrade the DVD drive to a DVD burner in a couple of days on my 5105-S607. I will also be trying to install a mini-PCI 802.11g card. I have already upgraded the RAM to the theoretical maximum 1GB (2×512MB) and have just installed a brand new 250GB WD drive. I have also just purchased a brand new 4400mAh battery, to replace the dead 4000mAh one that came with the system (my fault). I have also purchased an inexpensive 100W power adapter that works better than the original (it works, and doesn’t get nearly as hot as the 75W one. And when this laptop goes, I will have a universal AC adapter for my other lappys)
I am currently running a fresh copy of Windows XP Home SP3.
What I want to know is whether or not I can upgrade the RAM to 2GB. There are some sales on SODIMMs and am itching to try it. But if I know ahead of time that it is a waste, I will save my money for something else.
Also, I am in need of screws for this laptop, as some of mine have fallen out. I have enough to keep things chugging along, but I would be more comfortable were they all there.
In regards to the video artifacting situation I keep hearing about, I have noticed that when I play games, such as War Rock, I get some fairly awful artifacting, like spires coming out of walls, and walls disappearing. However, since I have no problems outside of 3D games, I think that the drivers are simply dated and the games I play simply too new for the GeForce 440 Go 32MB. Has anyone tried updated drivers, as they are hard to come by on the nVidia web site.
I’ll keep everyone updated on any progress.
Thanks for the how-to guide on the diss-assembly of this machine.
July 7th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Danny J,
No, you cannot. According to Toshiba specifications for Satellite 5105-S607, 1GB (512MB in each slot) is maximum for this model.

I just received the mini PCI wireless G adapter. It works, but it’s range is extremely limited. I don’t know if it is a defective card, or simply a matter of having a bad antenna. My other laptop (an Everex SA2053T) and my desktop with wireless card, work flawlessly. I am thinking of getting an antenna for 10 bux on ebay. I have to do more research first to see if it is worth it.
Does anyone know of a mini PCI adaptor with 802.11n compatibility, or a combo card that also includes BlueTooth? Thanks.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:38 am
From my experience, just because the specification says something, doesn’t mean that it is so. On my Everex SA2053T, I was told the maximum memory was 1GB. However, I tried a 2GB module, and it works perfectly. I wouldn’t be surprised if a 4GB module worked as well, but those are nearly $400. The same goes in the reverse: Just because my camera says it is SDHC compatible, doesn’t mean that I will be able to use a 32GB SDHC card. Some cameras are limited to 16GB.
I was just wondering if anyone has or could try it
July 8th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
has anyone heard anything about the nvidia g440 card yet? any after markets? anything?

I have a 5005 model and these instructions were same for that model. Thanks a lot.
I have added a mini pci wifi card in my laptop ( it had the slot, but no card or antenna) and had to open the display to install the internal antenna which I got out of another dead laptop. If any one wants help in that area, I can help.
