Toshiba Satellite M35X. How to remove LCD screen, video cable and FL inverter board.
Toshiba Satellite M35X display disassembly guide will show how to remove the LCD screen, the video cable and the FL inverter board. Before you start taking apart the LCD screen assembly, do not forget to remove the laptop battery. After you removed the LCD mask seals and screws start to separate the LCD mask from the LCD cover with your fingers. Put you finger under the mask and carefully lift it up until you feel that plastic latches are open. Do not hurry, the LCD mask is very fragile and it is very easy to break it. Do not use a screwdriver or any other sharp object to remove the LCD mask or you can scratch the screen. When you disconnect the video cable from the screen or cables from the FL inverter board, do not pull the cables, open the connector by the edges.

I have Satellite M35X S349
I just got it from best buy repeared (they tested PC and said the hard drive is failing so they cloned the hARD DRIVE FOR 400$) and here comes another problem( after the warranty) the sceen is dark, you can still see though a dark desk top WHAT EVER PAGE IS OPEN, then I thought it’s over, today opened it again and boom the screen is light again and I could work for a while and then boom, it’s dark again. the best buy guys told me it’s bad screen, and it needs to be replaced which is not going to be cheap, but it’s lights up sometimes, what is the problem thn the LCD screen or connection or something else?

Hi,
I have a Toshiba m35, it is running perfectly, however when you power it on you can see vertical lines on the screen, i tried connecting my laptop to an external screen, still facing the same problem. i took off the keyboard and tried to reinstall the video cable. it didn’t work out. but if you push a little bit of the video connector it work fine and when you remove your finger the problem come back again. any idea ??
thank you.

I have a M35x-S149 with a similiar video problem. Laptop will start-up, go into Windows then the screen goes blank. Have to re-start, but will only go to the Toshiba splash screen then screen goes blank. I removed CPU and re-seated. It worked, then after I put it back together same problem. I find that if I push down on the top of the case above the CPU I can reproduce the problem. No sure if its flexing the motherboard and causing a short or something wrong with the CPU lock. Any ideas?

Bad DC input jack…TOns of people have had this problem! But I can find only one post by Pallab Gupta of a successful fix. Can you please provide more detail instructions on how you did it? I bought a new jack and soldered it but I still have the same problem (ie, the laptop powers up, fan goes for a couple of seconds, then dies, no video, and the on button stays on until I unplug). I tried also a crazy idea of running wires soldered on the board to another replacement DC jack (hoping to avoid future breakups). Same results. I would hate to trash my 17″ souped up M35X that worked fine until now. What else can I try?
Also, I am finding a few motherboards on eBay, but would they fit a M35X S349, 17″ model? What spec do I need to look for?
Thank you.

Hello guys and maybe girls!
I recently disassemble my toshiba M30-604 (SM30-604) a few times, cause the fan was making such a noise. The last time I needed to disassemble cause the lcd screen stayed black. I noticed that when I disconnected which I think is that FL inverter thing, my notebook wanted to boot again. But now I have alot of lockups, I hardly can’t move my laptop anymore or else it hangs. The lcd screen cause black and I need to reboot it again.
So should I replace the FL inverter thing which only has 2 wires and the connection is made under the keyboard. It isn’t connected anymore on my laptop or else laptop doesn’t boot, does this mean it must be broke ? If you need me to make a video about it let me know and I will.

Possible fixes are reseating memory, hard drive, optical drive, try using an external monitor hooked up to it. Something jarred loose.

Guys,
I have a M35X with a cracked screen (dropped the laptop – hard). When I turn it on, the standard Toshiba screen comes on for a few seconds (with the fan running) then goes away. Nothing but dark grey after that, although you can see the cracked lines on the screen. Before I take it somewhere for an estimate – is this something I can fix myself? Am I looking at a lot of $$? Thanks in advance for your help!

Try and remove the screw under the round screw cover in that corner. After that lift up on the corner of the mask, should be able to see if the hinge is damaged. Also try and tighten any other screws visable under there. Squeeze the mask together with the back lid and then replace the first screw and cover.

Please tell if I can fix the LCD mask around the LCD screen and if not how much will it cost me to have it fixed.
I have a Toshiba Satellite P25 Series. I want to start fixing it asap.
It is loosen on the lower left side. When I open the computer the mask is loosen could this also be a hinge problem or a LCD mask problem. Please help me.

An update, it looks like the video card processor is getting hot and shutting video down as well. Look at maybe re adding more thermal compound to both the CPU and the GPU, graphics processor, sits under a heat shield next to the cpu. The video would shut off after about 10 sec. I am running one for an hour now, stripped down still, after adding more thermal compound and I am using a small weight on the gpu heatsheild to hold it in place.

Just fixed three M35 M35X in a row with the same problem, guys. I couldnt find anything online that gave me ANY CLUE. Video card is bad, right? Wrong. PASS IT ON TO OTHER BLOGS PLEASE, I will get it started here.
Heres the fix:
This requires access to the cpu and heatsink, remove the keyboard and palmrest to access the motherboard, I think you have to remove the screen too. Remove the heatsink and cpu. Reseat the cpu, heres the kicker, press firmly on the center of the cpu while turning the locking screw. Pressing the cpu hard, allows the locking mechinism to get a good bite. Turn the locking screw hard into the end of the turn. Hook up the heatsink and set it back on top of the cpu. Press down on the heatsink over the cpu, fairly strong pressure.
Now test the motherboard, use just cpu, heatsink, memory, power button board and cable and external monitor, you can use your screen instead by just hooking up the cable to motherboard, leave the screen laying flat on the table. Now push the power button with one hand and the other is still applying pressure to the heatsink, no you dont need to screw it down yet. Keep reseating the cpu with varying degrees of pressure if you dont get it go the first time.
The trick will be to get it all assembled with the same results.
There seems to be a problem with the cpu seating correctly, it must come loose and the laptops exhibit the symtoms of no video. It might even be neccessary to insert a wafer thin piece of copper or something in between the cpu and heatsink if the heatsink doesnt apply enough pressure to cpu to keep it seated deep enough to run the computer.
Am I a genius or what, lol. I am not, but I am sure surprised no one else has posted this info over the years.
Hope this helps someone with this frustrating problem with the M35 M35x and many more models.
Hope this helps someone.

ok tried new memory module to no avail. Is there integrated memory on the m35x-s109 that could be causing the problem?? I read if you remove damaged integrated memory that it helps.

Is it three long beeps? Probably memory error.
I don’t think it will cause the beep error message. Usually laptops will not beep if the keyboard is not connected properly or even missing at all.
November 6th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
I hope I am not bugging you, but I have one more question…the power light comes on, fan starts up and I hear a series of beeps, but there is nothing on the screen, which I understand is also an indication of a bad memory module. It seems unlikely, since I had no problems before disassembly. I did finally notice that the slot the keyboard cable goes in on the board has a piece of plastic chipped off…do you think that could cause the same reaction? It sucks because I was so happy to have fixed the power!!
thanks

Hi cj
I didnt remove the CPU originally, reseated the memory module, locked in place. I tried with a different monitor and it seems like neither is getting power I jiggled the connection to the motherboard and nothing…any other ideas??
thanks again

Bon,
You are right, this black cable is not connected to anything, just route it along with the thick cable.
Now about your problem.
1. Did you remove the CPU? Make sure the CPU is seated properly and locked inside the socket.
2. Reseat the memory module, it’s possible the RAM module is not making a good connection with the slot.
3. Test the laptop with an eternal monitor. Can you get image on the external monitor? If you can, check connection between the video cable and the motherboard.

I took my toshiba apart to fix the power, then put everything back together and my screen is not working. I noticed there is a black cable with an eye on the end that is coming out of the bigger cable…i dont recall removing that cable from anywhere…could that be what the problem is?
thanks in advance, and thank you for all the awesome disassembly instructions!!

Thanks for the detailed instructions. On a rainy Saturday, I took apart my M35X-S349. It had a faulty power plug (repaired twice, once by Geek Squad) and a loose screen connector or something. After takin apart the whole thing, I was succesful in re-soldering the power jack (which I know may come out again) and also got the screen working perfectly.

ok i managed to fix the problem. the wire from the screen(the one with a little black cable coming out, where it plugs into was a little messed up, looks like some soldering came out because all i did was push the little pins on the side IN a little then screen turned on.
September 28th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
ok. i HAVE A BIG PROBLEM….. i opened my laptop
“M35X-S349″ to fix the “cracked charger problem” and when i closed everything up and put everything back together, my computer power’s on fine, BUT the backlight wont turn on at all. i thought it was the FL Inverter and ordered a new one, and when i installed it, THE SAME PROBLEM WAS STILL THERE, NO BACKLIGHT. what do you guys think is the problem?
NEED HELP ASAP PLEASE

Hi,
I know that this is a q&a forum for troubleshooting, but I was hoping I can get some help with some r&d that I’m doing. I managed to get an lcd panel + inverter + casing from someone who was selling off the laptop as parts and was researching how to use the panel as an output for my PC. It would make a really cool wall-display with the cpu hidden somewhere wouldn’t it? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated- technical specs of pin-outs, connection possibilities- you name it. In fact anything that comes to mind that might even be of remote help would do me good.
Thanks a bunch and hope ur having a gr8 day!

Aman,
You’ll have to guess and there is no way I can tell you what is wrong without testing your laptop with a different LCD/video cable.
You might have:
1. bad video cable
2. bad LCD screen
3. bad motherboard (not likely because you have external video, but it’s also a possibility). I wish I can help you but I cannot.

Thanks cj2600,
I was able to reach the video cable on the motherboard using the instructions on irisvista.com.
However, after re-seating the video cable, there is no change and the problem still exists.
Do you think it looks like a bad video cable or could there be other issues.
Thanks,
Aman

Aman,
You’ll find instructions for taking apart this laptop at http://www.irisvista.com
Try reseating the video cable on the motherboard. This connector is located under the keyboard.
You don’t have to remove screws on the bottom, just lift up the keyboard as it shown on steps 8-11.
Yes, but you need another Satellite M35.
It is also possible that there is nothing wrong with the LCD screen and you have a bad video cable.

Just to add another observation :
I can hear a faint humming sound when the laptop is switched on.

Hi,
First of all, i should thank everyone who posts his/her valuable comments here. It sure saves a lot of trouble.
Now here is my problem :
I have a Toshiba M35 S359 and the display has gone blank.
The symptoms are :
1. The display comes up on an externally connected display.
2. If i try and increase/decrease the screen brightness, it shows a change in brightness but no picture.
3. Tried to boot in the safe mode, no luck.
Encouraged by the instructions on this site, i opened up my laptop and tried to reseat the cables on the LCD and on the inverter but no luck. I could not open and reseat the connection on the motherboard as i had no clue how to open the base (seems a bit complicated as i did remove all the screws but to no avail)
If the LCD has gone bad, is there any way of testing the LCD on another laptop or some homegrown technique (basically without shelling out $$$)
Please help and a big thanks in anticipation
